Can Male Hair Loss Be Reversed

Does It Run In The Family

Can hair loss be reversed? – Dr. Sanjay Panicker

Look into your familys history with hair loss. Male Pattern Baldness is typically a genetic condition, so your first step in determining if you are balding is finding out if you are genetically prone to baldness.

In the event you have a family history of male pattern baldness, then there is a good chance your hair loss is not the result of stress or another factor. It may come down to genetics, and there is not much you can do about that.

At this point, you should speak with a dermatologist to go over your hair restoration options. There is a lot of information you can find online, but the internet is also filled with half-truths and myths. The only way to get good information you can trust is to go directly to a medical professional who can review your hair loss.

Why is this so significant? Up until 2010 the U.S. Patent Office has granted just 64 U.S. patents for inventions addressing human hair loss. And while the remaining five patents cover products intended for internal use, they contain active ingredients that are not recommended for long-term use.

Understanding Male Pattern Baldness

Is There Anything You Can Do to Prevent Premature Male Baldness?

Male pattern baldness is hereditary, and it often begins with a receding hairline. You might notice thinning hair near your forehead at first. Eventually, your hairline might form an M shape.

As male pattern baldness progresses, you may lose more hair, and you may wind up with a bald spot on the top of your head. Some men with severe male pattern baldness eventually lose all their hair.

While genetics is the most common factor behind hair loss, other issues can also cause hair loss, such as stress and hair styles. So before recommending a hair loss treatment, our team will review your symptoms and medical history to determine if androgenic alopecia is truly the cause of your baldness.

The Genetics Of Male Pattern Baldness Testosterone Isnt The Cause

Some of the most notorious low testosterone myths center around male pattern baldness.

Some myths say, on the one hand, that too much testosterone causes balding. On the other hand, some myths say that low testosterone leads to balding.

Is testosterone really causing men to lose the hair on their head?

What the evidence shows is pretty interesting. If youre concerned about hair loss, you should be looking into the genetics of male pattern baldness.

Can Traction Alopecia Be Reversed

How I Reversed My Hair Loss | 1 Year Transformation | NO HAIR TRANSPLANT

Traction alopecia can be reversed in many cases, particularly if detected at an early stage. Traction alopecia is also the most preventable cause of hair loss.

Traction alopecia is caused by the repeated and prolonged pulling on the hair. The most common culprits include tight hairstyles such as cornrows and tight wigs and hair extensions.

Hair loss from traction alopecia is progressive and shows many early signs. This is why people can prevent further balding, and also reverse hair loss, by changing hairstyles. In this case, hair loss can be reversed, and new hair will eventually grow.

If the person continues pulling on their hair and using the same damaging hairstyles, traction alopecia can become permanent, and hair loss may not be reversed.

Many hair loss treatments are effective at reversing hair loss from early traction alopecia.

Can Anything Be Done About Male Pattern Baldness

Losing hair is a part of life. In fact, losing 50-100 hairs per day is a normal part of a healthy hair growth cycle. But, if you regularly lose more hairs than that, or youre developing a receding hairline or thin patches, you could be suffering from androgenic alopecia.

Androgenic alopecia is the medical term for hereditary hair loss. Its the most common cause of baldness, and it affects an estimated 80 million Americans. While androgenic alopecia can affect men and women alike, its most common in men.

Also called male pattern baldness, androgenic alopecia is the most common cause of hair loss. It might be common, but that doesnt mean its not embarrassing. At Dermatology Associates of the Lowcountry, Oswald Mikell, MD, and our team are here to offer hair loss solutions for male pattern baldness.

What Causes Hair Loss

Hair loss can be caused by a number of different factors there is not one defined cause. However, the four main factors for hair loss are hormone levels, genes, age, and stress. Your lifestyleincluding your diet, where you live, alcohol intake, and how much you sleepcan also play a part in hair loss.

Sometimes it can be hard to determine why exactly you are experiencing hair loss, so its important to understand just exactly what hair loss is in order to address it.

Male pattern baldness is often genetic. Its called androgenic alopecia or androgenetic alopecia.

Another cause of hair loss is alopecia areata, an autoimmune skin disease causing hair loss on the scalp, face, and sometimes other areas of the body.

Hair loss can be one of the signs of andropause, the male equivalent of menopause. Like women, mens hormones fluctuate on a monthly and even daily basis. They also affect biological processes, moods, and emotions in many of the same ways they do in women.

As they age, men also experience a drop in hormone production, especially testosterone, which in some cases can lead to hair loss and the growth of hair in places where you dont necessarily want it, such as your ears.

DHT, or dihydrotestosterone, is a derivative or by-product of testosterone. While the entire genetic process of male pattern baldness is not completely understood, scientists do know that hormones such as DHT shrink hair follicles, and when DHT levels are suppressed, follicles continue to thrive.

What The Future Holds

Hair Loss Can Sometimes Be a Sign of These 3 Serious Health Problems ...

Much work is being done on future treatments. Researchers are looking into everything from more highly concentrated Rogaine, to drugs that block the enzyme associated with hair loss, to trying to identify the responsible genes and finding the cells that promote hair growth.

“Up until the feeling was once you lost your hair, it was gone and that was it.. but minoxidil does work in some people and that means it’s possible to make hair grow,” says Jean-Claude Bystryn, M.D., professor of dermatology at New York University School of Medicine. “Now the challenge is to make it happen more often.”

Can Alopecia Areata Be Reversed

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder. There is no cure for the condition that causes sudden and severe hair loss, leaving smooth round bald spots on the scalp.

In most cases, however, this hair loss is spontaneously reversed, even without treatment. This means bald spots will eventually grow new hair again.

But because there is no cure for alopecia areata, loss of hair will happen again without notice a few or many times during the persons life. This will affect the same or different spots on the scalp and can also cause loss of body hair.

In most cases, though, hair grows again and the person can experience long periods of time without shedding.

Is Prp Effective For Hair Loss

As with any novel procedure, we are in the process of collecting long-term data to understand the possibilities of new and sustained hair regrowth with PRP. Today, some patients have PRP injection in conjunction with other hair loss treatments, such as medication.

Increasing clinical evidence suggests PRP can help patients with hair loss. Most PRP studies report following up with patients for up to six months after their procedure. After that point, we have limited data, but ongoing research can tell us which patients benefit most from PRP, which dont, and why.

That said, patients who work with the board-certified team at the UT Southwestern Department of Plastic Surgery have reported feeling satisfied with their results. As we discover more about this exciting new procedure, we hope to help patients with hair loss achieve their goals with a treatment plan that includes PRP.

Prescription Medications And Treatments

Here are some medications for hair thinning and loss that your doctor may be able to prescribe:

  • Finasteride : This is an oral medication that helps reduce levels of the hormone dihydrotestosterone that can cause hair loss.
  • Corticosteroids: These are oral or injected medications that can reduce inflammation that may lead to hair loss.
  • Laser therapy: Your doctor or a dermatologist may be able to treat hair follicles with laser technology that sends light particles called photons into your follicles to help them grow. Talk to your doctor first to see if this will help you.

Difference Between Telogen Effluvium And Balding

How to Reverse Male Pattern Baldness – Hair Loss in Men

Telogen effluvium is a cause for your hair to fall:

Stress is the only cause of hair loss due to telogen effluvium. Stress hormones called cortisol reduce hair growth hormones. Not only will your hair not grow, but your stands also become weaker, and your hair starts to shed.

Male pattern baldness is a cause for hair fall:

Caused by excess DHT production and hereditary, balding can be genetic or environmental. This means that if the men in your family have a receding hairline, the chances are so will you? Environmental factors vary from lousy lifestyle, poor diet, and low water quality. Use DHT blocking shampoos to promote hair growth.

Female Pattern Hair Loss

Symptoms in women are generally less severe than those experienced by men, appearing as an overall thinning of hairs across the top of the head, and the gradual loss of hairs down the center part-line of the scalp . The reason women experience milder symptoms is due to hormonal differences. Women produce significantly lower amounts of testosterone than men . Women also produce lower levels about 60 percent less than men of the enzyme 5-reductase that converts testosterone into DHT.

Additionally, women produce higher levels of another enzyme, aromatase , that converts testosterone into the female hormone, estradiol. While males also produce small amounts of aromatase, research has shown that aromatase levels in the frontal and rear scalp follicles in women are 4 to 6 times higher than in men, which is why women rarely lose hair in these areas.

Can I Use Other Techniques To Address My Hair Loss

In addition to using PRP therapy, we have a wide variety of other hair regrowth techniques. Male Pattern Baldness Cure: Can You Stop Mpb Forever

#MalePatternBaldness

In 30 seconds

Male pattern baldness affects men of all ages and it can, understandably, make a real impact on the self-confidence and mental health of those living with it. Although many men feel like balding is a sad sign of middle agedness and a decline of their once virile selves, male pattern baldness can actually start at any age from late teens. In fact, research suggests that 20% of men in their 20s and 30% in their 30s will suffer with some degree of MPB.It is caused by a combination of genetics and hormones. So, while not necessarily a direct result of having a bald father, the causes of male pattern baldness are hereditary. But can MPB be cured? While cured is a strong word, treatments called Finasteride and Minoxidil are available to combat male pattern baldness. These can help to slow, stop, and even reverse any hair loss to encourage hair regrowth.

New Promising Solutions For Pattern Hair Loss

Currently, the two most common and effective medications to combat pattern hair loss are Minoxidil and Finasteride . Neither of these drugs represents a complete hair loss cure, of course, but theyve been shown to stop hair loss in its tracks and even regrow hair in some cases. Additionally, finasteride is only meant to treat male pattern baldness, not female pattern baldness. Both drugs are only effective for as long theyre used, and results may not be visible for several months or more.

Minoxidil is a topical liquid thats either sprayed or dropped and then gently rubbed onto the areas of the scalp where the hair is thinning. This medication originated as a high blood pressure treatment, but doctors discovered that as a side effect it could also promote hair growth wherever applied. While generally safe to use, Minoxidil can irritate ones skin, alter hair color and texture, and lead to hair growth in unwanted places.

Finasteride comes in the form of an oral pill or a topical ointment. This medication lowers the amount of DHT, a natural hormone, which in turn increases hair growth and slows down hair loss. While finasteride can regrow hair where it has receded or thinned, this drug can yield side effects such as loss in sex drive or performance.
