Hairs Taken From Outside The Safe Donor Area

Can a Hair Transplant cure your thinning locks? – Dr. K Prapanna Arya

Hairs are often taken outside the safe donor area in a popular harvesting method known as follicular unit extractions . This risk is equally present with so called high tech procedures such as robotic extractions. FUE is a very common method of hair transplantation in the industry today.

For many years, the strip method or FUT was the standard approach for hair transplant. Unfortunately, due to poor communication and improper surgical technique, the procedure resulted in many patients having undesirable scars. Follicular unit extractions were first thought to relieve patients of the scars associated with follicular unit transplants . Advanced careful patient selection, wound healing technology and properly performed surgical closure has enabled the more reliable, predictable, and higher yield FUT to evolve. FUEs still create scarring and in fact creates more scarring than the FUT method. In addition, FUEs often require hair to be harvested from outside of the safe donor area.

This is unlike FUTs where hair is harvested only from safe donor area only. The bottom line is that hairs taken outside of the safe donor zone are prone to the same hair thinning and eventual pattern hair loss problems experienced at the scalp or the crown. While using these hairs will contribute to a short-term gain of more hairs available to transplant, in the medium and long-term, these grafts will thin and disappear.

How Is Tissue Expansion Performed

If you have scalp baldness or disfigurement due to burns, your provider may perform tissue expansion surgery. Tissue expansion requires general anesthesia and involves several steps:

  • A reconstructive surgeon inserts an implant under the scalp, where hair still remains. Shaped like a balloon, they call it a tissue expander.
  • Over several weeks, the expander is gradually inflated to stretch the skin.
  • The surgeon performs a second procedure to cover the bald area with the stretched skin.

Do not be conned into going ahead with a practitioner who promises a scarless hair transplant.

Risks And Costs Of Treatment

The price of a hair transplant will depend largely on the amount of hair youâre moving, but it generally ranges from $4,000 to $15,000. Most insurance plans donât cover it.

As with any kind of surgery, transplants have some risks, including bleeding and infection. Thereâs also the chance for scarring and unnatural-looking new hair growth.

Around the time new locks start to grow, some people have inflammation or an infection of the hair follicles, called folliculitis. Antibiotics and compresses can relieve the problem. Itâs also possible to suddenly lose some of the original hair in the area where you got the new strands, called shock loss. But most of the time, itâs not permanent.

Talk with your doctor about these risks and how much improvement youâre likely to get from the surgery. They can help you decide if it’s a good option for you.

How Short Can I Cut My Hair After A Hair Transplant

As we said before, the best is not cutting your hair too close to the scalp in your first haircut. But more important than this is how to cut your hair… Would you use a razor, or scissors? Well, the fact is that you should avoid using a razor and instead use scissors when getting your first hair cut 3 months after your operation, since razor can cause damages to the scalp and even tear out the transplanted follicles when pulling the hair.

Blades are not recommended, too, as they irritate the scalp and may cause an irreversible damage to the grafts. So, if you wish to use a razor in your new transplanted hair, you should have to wait at least 6 months, because new follicles need to be well implanted in the transplanted area. You can use a razor however after just one month, but only in the donor area and always after consulting your doctor.

What About Pattern Baldness After Hair Transplant Surgery

Generally, a patient cannot experience pattern baldness again after hair transplant surgery. This is due to the nature of the harvested hair follicles, which are unlikely to fall out since they are taken from the back and sides of the head.

However, it is possible for the transplanted hair to thin over time. Follicles do have a lifespan, and some patients may experience thinning of their transplanted hair or patchiness in parts of the scalp. This could be due to a surgical error when selecting the ideal donor site for hair followings, or human error on the part of the hair restoration surgeon. Additional hair transplant surgery may be needed to fill out the thin parts of the scalp.
