Nerve Damage Tingling And Pain

Does Creatine Cause Hair Loss?

Some targeted therapy drugs can damage nerves, leading to symptoms of pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in the arms, legs, hands and feet. These symptoms are known as peripheral neuropathy. Medications may help improve this condition. Physical therapy, acupuncture and certain types of exercise may also help to reduce symptoms and improve strength and balance.

Common Parp Inhibitorsside Effects

Before taking a PARP inhibitor, talk to your doctor about potential side effects and how to address them. The most common side effects of PARP inhibitors are:

  • Stomach problems
  • Shortness of breath
  • Painful bumps under the skin, often on the shins

Allergic reactions are rare but can be severe or life-threatening. If you are taking a PARP inhibitor and have signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the lips, face, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help immediately.

Other side effects may occur. Consult your healthcare professional for a complete list of side effects. Report side effects to your doctor.

Dosage For Maintenance Treatment Of Recurrent Ovarian Cancer

Zejula is approved as a maintenance treatment for recurrent ovarian cancer.* As a maintenance treatment, Zejula is used after your cancer has first been treated with other therapy. With recurrent cancer, the cancer improved with past treatment, but it has come back.

The typical Zejula dosage for this use is 300 mg taken once a day. You should try to take your dose at the same time each day.

For this use, its important to note that Zejula should be started within 8 weeks of your most recent cancer treatment with platinum-containing chemotherapy.

If you have side effects from Zejula, your doctor may prescribe for you a dosage of Zejula thats different than the typical dosage.

* This includes certain cancers in the fallopian tubes and peritoneum . Because they can be so similar to ovarian cancer, these forms of cancer are sometimes labeled as ovarian cancer.

Remission And The Chance Of Recurrence

A remission is when cancer cannot be detected in the body and there are no symptoms. This may also be called having no evidence of disease or NED.

A remission may be temporary or permanent. This uncertainty causes many people to worry that the cancer will come back. It is important to talk with your doctor about the possibility of the cancer returning. This is particularly important after treatment for ovarian/fallopian tube cancer, as many women experience at least 1 recurrence. Understanding your risk of recurrence and the treatment options may help you feel more prepared if the cancer does return. Learn more about coping with the fear of recurrence.

If the cancer returns after the original treatment, it is called recurrent cancer. It may come back in the same place , nearby , or in another place .

When this occurs, a new cycle of testing will begin to discover as much as possible about the recurrence. After this testing is done, you and your doctor will talk about the treatment options.

How recurrent cancer is treated

Treatment for platinum-sensitive recurrent disease

Clinical trials showed the addition of bevacizumab to carboplatin combinations extended the time before the disease came back but did not change how long patients lived. You should discuss the risks and possible benefits of this approach with your doctor.

The following PARP inhibitors are approved for the treatment of recurrent ovarian, fallopian tube, and peritoneal cancer:

What If I Miss A Dose

If you miss a dose of Zejula, or you vomit right after taking your dose, just skip that dose. Then take your next dose at the usual time. Dont double up your dose by taking an extra dose of Zejula. Doing so can increase your risks of side effects from the drug.

To help make sure that you dont miss a dose, try setting a reminder on your phone. A medication timer may be useful, too.

Is Zejula A Type Of Chemotherapy

No, Zejula isnt a type of chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy can refer to any drug thats used to treat cancer. But it usually refers to traditional medications that can affect your entire body .

Chemotherapy drugs affect cells that are rapidly multiplying . While this includes cancer cells, it also includes some healthy cells. This is why chemotherapy often leads to many unwanted side effects, such as hair loss.

Zejula, on the other hand, is a targeted therapy. This means the drug targets certain parts of specific cells, such as cancer cells. It does this instead of attacking all the rapidly multiplying cells in your body.

Because Zejula is targeted to only attack certain cells, it usually has different and fewer side effects than chemotherapy drugs do.

Women Who Are Pregnant Or Breastfeeding

PARP inhibitors carry a risk to the unborn baby and a potential for the loss of the pregnancy. Women who are pregnant or think they may be pregnant should tell their healthcare provider right away. Women of childbearing age should use effective contraception while being treated with a PARP inhibitor and for some time after the last dose.

Discuss effective contraception with your healthcare professional. Men who take a PARP inhibitor and have a female partner of childbearing age should use effective contraception during treatment and for some time after the last dose. Men should not donate sperm during PARP inhibitor treatment and for some time after the last dose.

Women should not breastfeed while taking a PARP inhibitor and for some time after the last dose.

*The prescribing information specifies different time periods for each PARP inhibitor. Consult the prescribing information for more specific information.

Anemia Bleeding And Low White Blood Cell Counts

HAIR LOSS TESTS: Complete List You Should Know!

Some targeted therapies damage bone marrow, where blood cells are made. This can result in too few red blood cells , too few platelets and a low white blood cell count .These bone marrow effects can lead to symptoms like fatigue, rapid heart rate, bleeding and increased risk for infection. Most of the time, these changes are mild. Your oncologist may test your blood, to make sure that your blood counts do not drop too low, which could delay treatment.

    How Do Parp Inhibitors Work

PARP enzymes help fix damaged DNA. BRCA genes also play a role in DNA repair through another pathway. When there is a BRCA mutation, the pathway to DNA repair is blocked. PARP inhibitors block the PARP pathway. This makes it hard for cancer cells with abnormal BRCA genes to fix damaged DNA. When the DNA in cancer cells cannot repair itself, these cells die. PARP inhibitors block DNA from being repaired, and as a result, the cells die.

    What Happens With Cancer

Normally, the cells in your body multiply and die at a normal rate. But with cancer, certain cells start growing and multiplying more quickly than normal.

Eventually, these cancer cells can spread to other parts of your body. And because cancer cells are growing and multiplying faster than healthy cells, they take away nutrients and other resources from healthy cells.

    What Are Parp Inhibitors

PARP inhibitors are known as a type of treatment called targeted therapy. PARP stands for poly ADP-ribose polymerase. This is a group of enzymes that help fix DNA damage. PARP1, PARP2, and PARP3 are enzymes that work together to help repair damaged DNA. PARP inhibitors block PARP. PARP inhibition prevents cancer cells from repairing their damaged DNA. This causes death of tumor cells.

Dosage For Maintenance Treatment Of Advanced Ovarian Cancer

Zejula is also approved as a first-line maintenance treatment for advanced* ovarian cancer. As a first-line treatment, Zejula is used for maintenance before other medications are used. However, before starting Zejula, youll still receive chemotherapy thats made from platinum.

As a maintenance treatment, Zejula is used after your cancer has first been treated with other therapy.

The typical Zejula dose for this use depends on either your body weight or your platelet count.

    • For people who either weigh less than 170 pounds or people with a platelet count thats less than 150,000 per microliter , Zejula is given at a dose of 200 mg taken once a day.
    • For people who either weigh more than or equal to 170 pounds or people with a platelet count thats greater than or equal to 150,000/L, Zejula is given at a dose of 300 mg taken once a day.

Its important to note that, for this use, Zejula should be started within 12 weeks of your most recent cancer treatment with a platinum-containing chemotherapy regimen.

If you have side effects from Zejula, your doctor may prescribe for you a dosage of Zejula thats different than the typical dose.

    * With advanced ovarian cancer, the cancer has spread out of the ovaries. This includes certain cancers in the fallopian tubes and peritoneum . Because they can be so similar to ovarian cancer, these forms of cancer are sometimes labeled as ovarian cancer.

    How Metastatic Cancer Is Treated

    Baldness in females: a Q& A with a dermatologist

If cancer spreads to another part in the body from where it started, doctors call it metastatic cancer. If this happens, it is a good idea to talk with doctors who have experience in treating it. Doctors can have different opinions about the best standard treatment plan. Clinical trials might also be an option. Learn more about getting a second opinion before starting treatment, so you are comfortable with your chosen treatment plan.

New treatments for these types of cancer include experimental combinations of chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and another type of systemic therapy called immunotherapy, also called biologic therapy. These combinations are designed to boost the bodys natural defenses to fight the cancer . Because the benefits of these options are still being studied, their risks must be weighed against possible improvements in symptoms and lifespan. Palliative care will be important to help relieve symptoms and side effects.

For most people, a diagnosis of metastatic cancer is very stressful and difficult. You and your family are encouraged to talk about how you feel with doctors, nurses, social workers, or other members of the health care team. It may be helpful to talk with other patients, including through a support group.
