In addition to these steps, you can also use some at-home gray hair remedies to help you avoid dyes. Some good ones to try include:

3 Easy Ways To Slow Down Hair Loss

Rick KaseljGeneral, Health, Healthy Living, Lifestyle

In 2012, researchers published the results of a worldwide survey on gray hair. In particular, they wanted to examine the 50/50/50 rule of thumb, which says that starting at age 50, about 50 percent of the population will have at least 50 percent gray hair.

They examined the hair of more than 4,000 healthy men and women and found that between the ages of 45 and 65, about three-quarters of them were affected with gray hair, with a mean intensity of about 27 percent. Overall, men had more gray hair than women did. Interestingly, the age of onset and the rate of graying with age were linked with ethnic and geographical origin.

In other words, people of Asian and African descent had less gray hair than those of Caucasian origin at comparable ages.

The researchers concluded that the rule of thumb wasnt quite correct and fit only about 6 to 23 percent of people around the world. In fact, one in 10 people over the age of 60 had no gray hair at all.

Still, the findings confirmed what most of us know between the ages of 45 and 50, the majority of folks will see some of those grays. Between the age of 51 and 55, researchers found that 78 percent of people had some gray hair, typically taking up about a quarter of their total hair volume. The rates went up with age, so that between the ages of 61 and 65, nearly all people had gray hair, covering about 40 percent of their total hair volume.

One thing seems to be clear gray hair is tied to our genes. Scientists have researched identical twins and found that they tend to develop gray hair at about the same age. In one instance, they studied 135 pairs of adult twins age 50 and older and found that hair graying and hair loss occurred at similar times and rates in identical twins.

We also know that two other things are involved in stopping the hair follicle from producing color:

  • At the end of each hair-growing cycle, some of the melanocytes become damaged or die
  • There is a melanocyte stem cell reservoir in the hair follicle that can replenish these melanocytes however, when this reservoir goes empty, color goes away

There are other processes that may be at work, too, including the following:

  • Free radical damage resulting in oxidative stress in the hair follicles
  • Heightened production of hydrogen peroxide in the hair follicles our hair cells naturally create hydrogen peroxide, and when the amount increases as it often does with age, it can obliterate the natural pigment

These are areas that scientists are working on to see if they may be able to help us turn back the clock. So far, theyve found potential solutions that would delay the onset of gray hair, but they havent found anything that could reverse it.

The Future Of Thinning Hair

Hair-loss science marches on somewhat slowly, considering that todays most effective treatments, finasteride, and minoxidil, were approved in the late 90s and scientists have pointed up a new class of drugs that might be effective against male pattern hair loss in the future. In 2019 research conducted at Columbia University, scientists found that a type of drug known as a JAK inhibitor might also inhibit and reverse hair loss . JAK inhibitors are usually used to soothe rheumatoid arthritis, an inflammatory condition. In this trial, researchers gave it to 22 men and women with androgenic alopecia, and 73% of them saw increased hair growth. The theory here is that hair follicles may miniaturize and die because of inflammation, and JAK inhibitors might quell that inflammation, pushing the follicle from resting phase back into the active anagen phase.Whether these drugs will make hair loss a thing of the past remains to be seen. The good news is that you can likely make it a distant memory today, with one or a combination of current effective treatments.

Loosen Up Your Hairstyles

Scalp stress is real, okay! Styling your hair too tight can cause itching, burning, and soreness to your scalp, especially when you move your head, this is a sign that your hairstyle is entire to tight. When wearing a tight hairstyle, your follicles are experiencing too much stress at the root which makes your scalp feel sore. Constant pulling and tugging of your strands will ultimately cause shedding and breakage, so loosen up!

Choose The Right Products

If you decide to color-treat your tresses, its best to opt for a stylist to color your hair. A professional can help determine the safest dye to use for your hair type, and can provide tips on shampoos, conditioners and other hair products made specifically for color-treated hair.

Its also wise to forego daily heat styling, such as with blow dryers, curling wands and flat irons. We all want to look our best, but cutting back on intense heat styling tools one or two days a week will help hair bounce back from the damage they inflict.

If you must use heat-styling products, apply a heat protectant to hair prior to use. A heat protectant provides a protective coating between heated styling products and hair, and adds moisture to protect against damage during heat styling.

Avoid hair products that contain hormone-disrupting chemicals like parabens and phthalates commonly found in many hair products. Dr. Bergfeld adds, Having said that, the science does not substantiate that these cosmetic chemicals you at any risk since the natural environment and foods have a greater risk.

Also, I have graying hairs. Hair growth is also very slow. Please help. I have tried: Some hair oils. I think it was caused by: Hard water and stress

If your ovaries were removed in the hysterectomy, you are suffering a major hormonal imbalance. Since you have been experiencing this for 4 to 5 years, there is something else involved with the hair loss. Many medications cause hair loss, so check to see if you are taking one. If you use facial creams that contain Retinol A, this too can cause hair loss. If you take a multi-vitamin, make sure it does not contain iron. After a hysterectomy, our bodies no longer require large levels of iron. Too much iron can cause your hair loss.
