Causes Of Thinning Hair

How to Treat Your Thinning Hair Holistically and Thicken it Without Surgery – Dr. Anthony Youn

Its not entirely clear what causes thinning hair in men.

We do know that male pattern baldness has something to do with androgens. These are hormones responsible for controlling bodily processes that happen during and after puberty, including hair growth.

Testosterone is the most well-known androgen. An androgen called DHT is most involved in hair growth. High levels of T and DHT may influence the speed of your hair cycle, which can lead to thinning hair.

First, heres a quick refresher on hair growth:

  • Your hair grows out of little capsules in your skin called follicles.
  • Each follicle supports the growth of a single hair by a little under half an inch per month for about 2 to 6 years this is called the anagen phase.
  • The follicle eventually shrivels up and cuts the hair off from the blood supply underneath, pushing the hair out permanently this is called the catagen phase.
  • The follicle spends a few months resting and eventually generates a brand-new hair this is called the telogen phase.
  • The process restarts back at the anagen phase and goes through the same phases again.
  • These phases go on for many years until a follicle eventually cant produce any more hairs.

Its believed that the androgen receptor gene may increase T and DHT levels and speed up this cycle.

But a 2017 study found that at least 200 other possible genes may contribute to your chance of male pattern baldness.

Some environmental and lifestyle factors can also affect hair loss, including:

How To Protect Manage And Treat Thinning Hair:

You likely dont need to wash your hair every day. In fact, Samantha DelaFuente, a stylist at Marie Robinson Salons in New York and Miami, tells SELF that she recommends washing only two or three times a week. Dont be afraid of dirty hair, she says.

And dermatologists agree: Washing too often strips your hair of necessary oils, and washing infrequently can leave hair dull and limp, especially if you overuse dry shampoo, Dr. Bridges says. If you have natural hair, which tends to be drier and more prone to breakage, clean it even less frequently, Dr. Khetarpal says.

Moisturizing shampoos formulated without sulfateschemicals in shampoos that help clean but can also be drying on sensitive or dry scalpsare a safe bet for everyone. In particular, celebrity stylist Tym Wallace tells SELF he recommends Oribe Gold Lust Repair & Restore Shampoo .

Conditioner gives your hair shine and reduces static electricity, the AAD explains, which is why it improves the look and feel of dull or damaged hair. Apply to the ends of the hair and work your way up, DelaFuente says. A little goes a long way the more conditioner you use, the flatter your hair will be.

Remove tangles with a wide-tooth comb and rinse with cool water, which closes the cuticle and makes the hair shiny, Dr. Bridges explains.

After shampooing and conditioning, try using a leave-in product, like a conditioner or detangler, which will boost moisture and provide heat protection before styling.

Brittle hair is a combination of dryness, dullness, split ends and frizzing. Like dry skin, dry hair has a wide spectrum of levels from mild to severe and a wide range of causes, as well. Understanding what causes your hair to become dry and brittle is half the battle.

Lets explore the subject of brittle hair and its causes. Well also talk about the difference between brittle and thinning hair, and how to treat it.

Where Is Your Hair Loss

flash1.jpg

Is your hair thinning at the crown , or in front ? Or both? Location is actually very important.

If your hair loss is early and mainly happening at the crown, for instance, you can get away with saving money and avoiding potential side effects by sticking to minoxidil, rather than any prescription or combination treatment. If your hair loss is strictly in the receding hairline department, on the other hand or both hairline and crown, as is very common then minoxidil alone wont be the best choice for you.

How To Deal With A Balding Crown

If you dont want to opt for the above treatments, or have tried and failed then here are a few things you can do to style your hair in a way that makes the thinning less obvious. Try one of these options:

Cut your hair short

For anyone with short length hair, the shorter the better. Keeping the leftover hair longer will mean thinning areas are more obvious. PLEASE dont be that guy with a bad comb over. We beg you!

Grow your hair extra long

In saying that, if the thinning area isnt too big, it can be hidden well with longer hair. Grow it so long that there is enough hair to cover the bald spot. You could try a slicked back look side part, a messy style or man bun.

Accentuate the front of your hair

Rock the hair you do have left and make the front more exaggerated to direct peoples attention. This could be in the form of a quiff, pompadour or spiked up front.

Short back and sides

Shave the sides and back but leave the top of the head long for an on-trend look.

Use light, volumising products

Throw away any gels that weigh your hair down and use products that will give your hair volume which will hopefully cover parts of your crown.

Blow dry your hair

Air drying unfortunately lets the hair dry flat, whereas blow drying will lift hairs and seperate them making them appear thicker.

Shave it off

Be brave and shave! See how you would look with a bald head and embrace the new you!

Whatever you decide, were here to support you every step of the way.

Cancer Treatment Is A Trigger

Radiation and chemotherapy used to treat cancer are some of the common causes of hair loss in women. Both therapies harm hair follicles in addition to killing cancer cells. People undergoing cancer treatment often experience dramatic hair loss as a result of these therapies. They may wake up with clumps of hair on their pillow or they may lose large amounts of hair in the shower. Rapid hair loss in women often starts within 2 weeks of beginning treatment. It may be worst between 1 to 2 months into therapy. The scalp may be extra sensitive during this time. It may be irritating to wash, brush, and comb hair. The good news is that once cancer treatment is over, hair tends to grow back.

Secondary Factors In Hair Loss

Yeah, its true that MPB is primarily driven by genetics and the other three-headed monster, DHT. But there are other things that potentially figure into the mix, too.

Age Weve kind of touched on this one already, but the bottom line is that the rate of hair growth slows as you get older. An elderly guy with a full head of hair is worthy of our praise because he has somehow defied the odds of aging and genetics. Bravo, kind sir!

Smoking You know that smoking is bad for you, but were not here to lecture. Among smokings many negative health effects, heavy smokers are more likely to experience hair loss than non-smokers. By heavy smoker, we mean someone who smokes 20 cigarettes a day, or more. Why? Because smoking messes with your blood circulation and that means less blood flow to your hair follicles.

Alcohol Many men enjoy a cocktail or two at the end of a long day of a work or a long week, and theres absolutely nothing wrong with that. But unrestrained alcohol consumption may contribute to hair loss because alcohol raises estrogen levels while Zinc levels are reduced. And Zinc is an essential mineral for growing hair.

Poor Diet Maintaining a healthy diet is excellent for a lot of reasons, including that its good for hair health. For instance, protein is essential for prolonging your hairs growing phase, so making sure that your diet includes a sufficient amount of protein is important. A diet that doesnt include enough iron can lead to hair loss, as well.

Whats Hair Loss In Women

Men

Hair loss in women is just that when a woman experiences unexpected, heavy loss of hair. Generally, humans shed between 50 and 100 single hairs per day. Hair shedding is part of a natural balance some hairs fall out while others grow in. When the balance is interrupted when hair falls out and less hair grows in hair loss happens. Hair loss is different than hair shedding. The medical term for hair loss is alopecia.

Hair grows on almost all of your skin surfaces not the palms of your hands, soles of your feet, lips or eyelids. Light, fine, short hair is called vellus hair. Terminal/androgenic hair is thicker, darker and longer.
