Does Alpha Lipoic Acid Cause Hair Loss

Brief Review Of The Zempleni Et Al Study Design

Does Alpha-Lipoic Acid Help With Hair Regrowth? Day 43 Journey To Hair Regrowth

For the complete Zempleni et al experimental design, results and conclusions please view here.

Zempleni et al used 5 groups of rats all receiving intraperitoneal injections of each of the following for 28 days a control group receiving i.p injection of a phosphatidyl choline dispersion in saline, a low dose lipoic acid group a high dose lipoic acid group, a high dose lipoic acid + biotin, and a group receiving hexanoic acid . The test compounds were all administered as PC dispersions in saline. The rats all received an experimental diet, ad libitum , containing 1.27 umol biotin but without supplemental lipoic acid. It should be noted the low dose in rats corresponds to 62.3 mg lipoic acid/day and the high dose 225.4 mg lipoic acid/day with 34.3 mg biotin for a 70 kg human but without consideration of the PK differences between the routes of administration or the carrier. In general, i.p. injections of the salts of lipoic acid produce faster and higher plasma and tissue concentrations than per oral doses and the elimination ½ live is longer.

How To Use Folifort

Zempleni Et Al Results And Conclusions

Briefly, Zempleni et al found the activities of pyruvate carboxylase and B-methyl-crotonyl-CoA carboxylase in livers from the high dose, i.p. lipoic acid-treated rats were less than in controls . They concluded similar effects would likely be found after chronic oral administration of lipoic acid in humans with inborn lack of B-carboxylase activity who could suffer deleterious effects. . In the high dose group lipoic acid: biotin was administered in a molar ratio of 7.8:1 and co-administration of biotin prevented the reduction in carboxylase activities.

How Can Noise And Chemicals Cause Hearing Loss

Revifol Reviews : Scam? Ingerdients, Side Effects Hair ...

High-intensity noise can physically damage the sensory cells in the ear. Chronic exposure to loud noise also generates high levels of harmful free radicals.

Studies indicate that certain drugs and toxins cause hearing loss in a number of ways. However, they all share at least one common factor with noise: creating free radicals. Although researchers knew that free radicals were generated in the inner ear, early testing couldn’t link them to specific damage causing the hearing loss. Later lab and animal studies established that free radicals damage sensory cells on the cochlea.

Side Effects Of Alpha Lipoic Acid And Acetyl L

Alpha lipoic acid, or ALA, is a naturally occurring anti-oxidant that is created by your body and can also be found as a nutritional supplement for its potential benefits concerning diabetes, liver disease and brain function. Acetyl L-carnitine, also called L-carnitine or ALCAR, is a nutrient that helps your body convert fat into energy and is used to treat certain heart conditions, peripheral vascular disease, diabetic neuropathy, memory impairment, kidney disease, sexual dysfunctions, chronic fatigue syndrome and hyperthyroidism. Talk with your doctor or a healthcare professional before using ALA or ALCAR due to the potential of developing side effects.

Ala Improves Vision Health

Oxidative stress can damage the eye nerves and lead to long-term vision ailments. But thanks to the antioxidant properties of ALA, these can be prevented. ALA was used in several occasions to prevent retinal damage, cataracts, and even macular degeneration. Studies show that ALA can even be used to prevent diabetic retinopathy .

Alpha-lipoic acid might decrease blood sugar. Diabetes medications are also used to lower blood sugar. Taking alpha-lipoic acid along with diabetes medications might cause your blood sugar to go too low. But more evidence is needed to know if this interaction is a big concern. Monitor your blood sugar closely. Some medications used for diabetes include glimepiride , glyburide , insulin, pioglitazone , rosiglitazone , chlorpropamide , glipizide , tolbutamide , and others.

The Bottomline For Using Biotin For Hair Growth And Health

Its unlikely, though not impossible, that your hair loss is caused by a biotin deficiency. Hair loss is just one of several signs that you could be lacking this important B vitamin. If you suspect , look for other signs too including rough and scaly patches of skin, swollen tongue, and fat deposits on the face. If you notice these, make an appointment to talk to a doctor in person.

For those of us with seemingly normal levels, you can still increase your biotin intake through foods rich in biotin and with supplementation. Remember, however, biotin is water soluble. This means massive daily doses of the vitamin are futile, as youll be sending any excess biotin down the toilet, literally.

Although there arent significant, known risks associated with biotin supplementation there also isnt major evidence that it is helpful in growing or preserving hair in those of us with normal levels. However, unlike many other hair loss “solutions”, there is evidence that biotin can aid in hair growth and slowing hair loss.

Medical Conditions Associated With Hair Loss

Cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome. Androgenetic alopecia may be an indicator of cardiovascular risk. In one study, 80 men and 70 women with early-onset androgenetic alopecia had significantly higher triglyceride as well as total and LDL-cholesterol levels, and lower HDL cholesterol, than men and women without hair loss . In another study, male androgenetic alopecia was correlated with high blood pressure .

Early onset of pattern hair loss may be a stronger predictor of cardiovascular disease than later-onset androgenetic alopecia. In one study, men with early-onset androgenetic alopecia were more than three times as likely to need coronary artery bypass surgery before age 60 than men with later-onset hair loss and those without hair loss . In addition, early-onset androgenetic hair loss has been linked to an increased risk of metabolic syndrome in men , while female pattern hair loss has been associated with metabolic syndrome in women .

Because some evidence suggest androgenetic alopecia may correlate with increased prostate cancer risk, men experiencing male pattern hair loss, especially those whose hair loss began at an early age, should monitor their prostate health and take steps to prevent prostate cancer. More information about keeping your prostate healthy is available in the Prostate Cancer Prevention protocol.

ALA achieves this in different ways. ALA has an insulin-mimicking effect. It increases glucose uptake in a way that allows more of glucose to travel to the muscle cells and only some of it to the fat cells. This way, ALA lowers blood sugar levels as well thereby creating a conducive atmosphere for fat burning.

    Promotes Normal Cardiovascular Function

    Lipoic Inj I.V Infusion

Blood vessels are lined with a single layer of cells called the endothelium. Healthy endothelial cells help to relax blood vessels. The endothelial lining can become compromised due to illnesses, leading to poor vascular health. As we age, oxidative stress negatively affects cardiovascular health. Unchecked, oxidative stress will damage endothelial tissue in arteries and affect blood flow, including to the heart. While the degradation of heart function can lead to serious health issues, antioxidants help promote a healthy heart and cardiovascular system.

One study revealed that when ALA was introduced to previously damaged blood vessel cells in vitro , it promoted normal function of the cells and supported the cells antioxidant defenses. In another study, IV-administered alpha-lipoic acid helped promote normal circulation. Overall, ALA has a cardioprotective effect which may be helpful to people seeking to support their heart.

    Amino Acids And Proteins

Protein malnutrition, such as in kwashiorkor and marasmus, can result in hair changes that include hair thinning and hair loss .

One study examined the role of L-lysine, an essential amino acid that may play a role in iron and zinc uptake. Addition of L-lysine to iron supplementation resulted in a significant increase in mean serum ferritin concentration in some women with chronic TE who failed to respond to iron supplementation alone . Although interesting, there is limited data available, and the role of L-lysine should be investigated further.

In terms of other amino acids and proteins, no clear conclusions may be drawn about the role of supplementation in hair loss. While trials of amino acid and protein supplements have been published, they are formulated with a variety of nutrients, and therefore it is unclear what role, if any, is played by amino acid and protein supplementation in the absence of known deficiency.

    Where Do You Get Alpha

There are several ways you can obtain alpha-lipoic acid. First and foremost, the cells in your body naturally produce it. Many foods contain alpha-lipoic acid, and it’s also available as a nutritional supplement. Additionally, alpha-lipoic acid is an ingredient in anti-aging skin care creams and, in some situations, administered by injection.

As such, applying biotin to the hair or scalp likely does little to nothing to remedy your hair loss. It isnt even clear that your hair or scalp can absorb biotin.

Supports Already Healthy Blood Glucose Levels

ALPHA LIPOIC ACID. The Super Anti Aging Antioxidant – Weight Loss & Energy

High levels of blood glucose, or blood sugar, are a result of the bodys inability to sustain normal insulin levels, the hormone responsible for helping glucose enter your cells. Without insulin, glucose builds up and can result in many serious health issues. A 2017 study examined the effects of alpha-lipoic acid on blood glucose levels and found that it helps sustain normal blood glucose levels and insulin sensitivity, indicating that ALAs properties extend beyond that of being strictly an antioxidant.

    Ala And Other Health Conditions

ALA has been suggested as a potential aid in stopping or slowing the damage done by a variety of other health conditions from HIV to liver disease. However, much of the research is still early and evidence isn’t conclusive.

There has also been recent interest in supplemental ALA for weight loss. But again, there is no evidence that ALA has any effect on weight loss in humans, and more research needs to be done.

Promotes A Strong Brain & Sharp Memory

As you get older, your body produces less alpha-lipoic acid, which means you have less protection from free radicals than when you’re young. Some research shows that people living in heavily polluted cities experience cognitive damage due to higher-than-normal levels of environmental toxins.

    Alpha Lipoic Acid Recommendations

ALA is naturally synthesized in your body, therefore, no daily recommended doses have been established however, the University of Maryland Medical Center states that ALA supplementation for general anti-oxidant support should typically range from 20 to 50 mg per day in adults. Diabetics and people with diabetic neuropathy may be required to take up to 800 mg per day however, this should only be done under the supervision of a physician due to ALA’s ability to reduce blood sugar levels.

    Is Alpha Lipoic Acid Safe

    Pin on Neuropathy Medication

According to the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, Alpha lipoic acid is rated Possibly Safe when it is used appropriately.

Drugs.com also says that there is No safety concerns despite wide use of this supplement.

However, this does not mean that the supplement will be safe for everyone. Furthermore, if the supplement is not used properly, serious adverse reactions are possible.

To reduce the risk of alpha lipoic acid side effects, it is important to take this supplement only as directed by your doctor, naturopath or other healthcare provider.

Never take more than your recommended dosage, and do not continue the supplement for longer than you need to.

If you experience any serious side effects while using alpha lipoic acid, stop taking the supplement and talk to your physician before resuming it.

Potential Side Effects Of Using Alpha

Alpha-lipoic acid is generally considered safe and gentle with a low risk of side effects. However, since it is a detoxifying enzyme, it may cause your skin to purge during the initial use and lead to breakouts. Do not worry if this happens â the purging stops within a few days of initial use.

When taken in the recommended doses, it rarely causes any adverse effects. But if taken in higher doses, it may lead to symptoms like nausea or rashes. These effects could be more pronounced in the elderly . Extremely high doses may lead to oxidation, though there is no research to support this. Some products with a high concentration of alpha-lipoic acid may lead to redness or skin irritation.

If you are new to it, it is recommended you incorporate alpha-lipoic acid gradually into your skincare routine. Pregnant women and children should consult a healthcare provider before taking this antioxidant.
