In that case, talk with your doctor about potentially changing your medication to one that doesnt have hair loss as a side effect, suggests Gagneja.
You may also consider consulting with a dermatologist who specializes in hair loss issues, Kindred adds, since theyre likely to have dealt with IBD-related hair issues in the past.

Will Your Hair Grow Back
Dr. Carteron says that hair can grow back after the cause of hair loss is identified and medications are adjusted as needed.
With leflunomide I lost a third of the density of my hair, and I was devastated as it fell out so fast, Sue B. told us on Facebook. As soon as I stopped it, my hair began to recover.
Some patients we heard from did say their hair didnt totally regain its former fullness. I didnt stay on methotrexate for long, but my hair just never came back, Rene Marie B. told us. Others said that their hair took a long time to regrow after stopping methotrexate as it slowly leaves the body. Some who stayed on MTX said the hair thinning eventually stopped.
Unfortunately, its hard to know exactly how your medication will affect you until you start it.
Even if your hair does thin, you might be the only one who can tell. I had extremely thick hair to start with so my hairdresser and I are the only ones who notice, Cindy B. told us. I am still on methotrexate because it works and the hair thinning has slowed down.
Medication side effects can be scary and concerning, but the risks need to be balanced with a medications benefits. Dr. Blazer says she reviews the side effects of medications, including hair loss, ahead of time with patients. This empowers patients to look for the symptom and bring it up to me during our subsequent visits, she says.

Arthritis Medications And Hair Loss
Certain medications to treat arthritis can cause hair loss. Learn what to do.
People with autoimmune conditions, such asrheumatoid arthritis and lupus, can experience hair loss as a troubling symptom of their disease. Other times though, the cause of the shedding locks could be the medications used to treat the disease.
Fortunately, hair loss from arthritis medications is not a widespread complication. Still, if your hair is an important part of your identity, its not a small matter to you.
What Medications Cause Hair Loss?
Methotrexate: The most commonly prescribed disease-modifying antirheumatic drug for rheumatoid arthritis, methotrexate is responsible for hair loss in about 1 to 3% of people. The hair loss happens because methotrexate is doing what its supposed to do stop cells from growing. This includes cells causing inflammation and, unfortunately, hair follicles.
Folic acid is commonly prescribed with methotrexate to alleviate some of its side effects. Taking this synthetic form of folate, a B-complex vitamin, can help keep your hair healthy, but it has not been found to promote hair growth.
Leflunomide : Another widely used DMARD for RA with the potential for hair loss is leflunomide. It often is prescribed in combination with methotrexate, and causes hair loss similar to the way methotrexate does in about 10 percent of users.

Scalp Pain After Being Under Anesthesia
I have been experiencing on-and-off deep scalp pain. This is a different pain from scalp psoriasis.
I liken the burning to sunburn on your scalp a deep searing feeling that radiates heat to the touch. But not only does my scalp hurt, but even my hair also hurts.
Theres a phenomenon called telogen effluvium where hair falls out due to a trauma to your body, but itll grow back. Whenever Ive had these major sheds like this, I try to remind myself why its happening to quell the rising panic within.

I’ve been on Remicade for RA for several years. It has worked fairly well except that I have lost so much hair. I’ve been thinking of switching to Simponi. Has anyone experienced new or worseninghair loss while on Simponi?
None of the reviews mention anything about hair loss, and hair loss is not a known side effect of Simponi either so it’s hard to say.
I have been on Simponi for 2 yrs now and have not noticed significant signs of hair loss.
+0Colleen M M
I am currently on Simponi, it caused serious mood changes and I am losing my hair. It is not falling out in clumps, but slowly thinning.
My husband is on Simponi, and i have noticed significant mood changes just before the injection about one week before. Irational and extremely miserableIts not right, does anyone else have this. He also feels he is going down with a head cold!
I was on remicade and had hair loss so doctor put me on simponi aria, same company, still have hair loss!
I have RA and recently switched to Simponi. I absolutely LOVE it but it does kind of “wear off” about a week before the next infusion. But the upside is that I feel 20 years younger! No more sleeping for days and flares once a month. Actually I really haven’t had any side affects except the week before feeling edgy because I need my next infusion.

Can Remicade Cause Weight Gain
Disease activity was assessed by the Harvey-Bradshaw Index before and after infliximab infusion. Many Crohn’s patients might benefit from modest weight gain because the disease has left them undernourished, Brown added. However, some patients clearly had excessive weight gain that poses a health hazard.
Change Arthritis Drugs Or Dosages
You may be able to switch to a different type of drug with less risk of hair loss, such as a biologic or lower the dose of the offending medication while adding in another. Luckily, there are many options for treating inflammatory arthritis, so management changes can be made in patients experiencing excessive hair loss, Dr. Blazer says.
In the case of one patient experiencing hair loss, methotrexate still proved to be the most effective therapy for her RA, even after trying other DMARDs, Dr. Carteron says. Therefore, she elected to remain on methotrexate plus a TNF-blocker biologic, but we utilized the lowest possible dose of methotrexate, adjusting it to her disease activity.
Remember: Dont stop taking any arthritis medication without first talking to your doctor.

The most important things to know about 6-MP is that it may cause certain side effects, such as hair loss, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. It should also not be used within two weeks of receiving a live vaccination. If you’re unsure if a vaccination you received was live, check with your healthcare provider.

Of more urgent concern are side effects such as bleeding, bruising, or sores dizziness or loss of consciousness mouth pain and joint pains. Some of these can also occur as signs of IBD, so it’s important to keep your healthcare provider informed of any problems you’re experiencing.
6-MP can also cause abnormal liver function tests, and in one study, this occurred in about 4% of patients taking it to treat IBD. For this reason, a healthcare provider should do periodic blood tests to monitor liver function. In some cases, a high level of certain substances in the blood may mean that the dosage of the drug needs to be lowered, or that the drug needs to be discontinued.
