The Sun Is The Best Source Of Vitamin D

Does Vitamin D3 Deficiency Cause Hair Loss?

Likely, in today’s day and age, we all need a good dose of sunshine to better balance our vitamin D levels. When our skin is exposed to sunlight, vitamin D synthesis occurs. Vitamin D2 is absorbed from UV rays and our bodies naturally convert that into vitamin D3 – the usable form of vitamin D. Itâs recommended to sunbathe midday, between 11 am-2 pm, while the UV rays are the most intense .In a study, researchers suggest 13 minutes of clothed midday sun exposure, three times a day is enough to obtain adequate vitamin D levels from sun exposure alone.

Role Of Vitamin D In Hair Loss: A Short Review 2021

J Cosmet Dermatol doi: 10.1111/jocd.14421Kriteeka Saini 1, Venkataram Mysore 1

Background: Vitamin D, a vitamin and hormone, plays an important role in dermatology and dermatotherapeutics, due to its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, and regulation of keratinocyte differentiation and proliferation. It also affects the hair cycle, and its role in hair loss is under constant research.

Objectives: This review aims to give a brief overview of vitamin D biology within the hair follicle, role in the etiopathogenesis, and rationale for supplementation in various alopecias.

Methods: A PubMed literature search was performed to review relevant current literature and studies investigating the role of vitamin D in the etiopathogenesis, as a supplement and a potential therapeutic modality in hair loss.

Results and conclusion: Vitamin D is intricately involved in various signaling pathways of growth and differentiation of hair follicles. Most studies show an inverse relationship between serum vitamin D levels and non-scarring alopecias such as telogen effluvium, androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, and trichotillomania. Vitamin D deficiency is also associated with scarring alopecia. However, conclusive studies to demonstrate the benefit of vitamin D administration in correcting hair loss and managing these conditions are lacking. Hence, further studies are needed before vitamin D can be routinelyReferences

Does Vit D Cause Hair Loss

Vitamin D Deficiency Hair Loss

Both vitamin D deficiency, as well as vitamin D excess, may cause hair loss, Chacon explains. A 2020 study in the International Journal of Dermatology found that vitamin D deficiency may also play a role in the development and severity of androgenetic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness.

Vitamin D Supplements For Hair Loss

I had considered writing this post in the past, but put in on the backurner until I recently got two e-mails from a person I will address as Mr. BB. These e-mails entail taking Vitamin D supplements for hair growth. I am pasting most of his two e-mails content below:

E-mail 1:

I found this page and thought it could be of interest for you as you also follow closely the AA. It´s dated from February 2017:

https://www.vitamindcouncil. org/new-study-finds- derivative-of-activated- vitamin-d-helps-manage-hair- loss/

I am taking vitamin D3 supplement since 14th of April 2017 and must say that within 3 or 4 days I noticed the hair stopped falling. I even think my hair is growing back in some places. The doses I take are important. In fact today I am taking 30000 UI daily .

I started to lose my hair around 1992-1993. It´s been a slow process but it has reached a level that made me think I´d better shave it all. Until I found some study on Vitamin D3 and started to supplement myself. I think it is working.

It´s already a miracle that something could make your hair loss stop let alone something that makes them regrow and boosts thickness and growth. What if the cure has always been here and it was just of Vitamin D deficiency ? In countries in which we live in it has been proven that 80 % of population is deficient.

E-mail 2, after I sent him a brief reply:

What Else Can I Do

To slow hair loss, focus on eating a well-rounded diet full of protein, vitamin C, iron, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids. Additionally, certain hair products, such as hair dyes, can contribute to hair loss. Try to be gentle with hair, avoiding overbrushing or overwashing. Stress can also contribute to hair growth or lack thereof, so try to manage emotions and reduce stress. For more information about supplements to slow hair loss, speak with a healthcare provider or pharmacist.

In addition to biotin, the other B vitamins are important for healthy hair growth, including Vitamin B6, B12, and folic acid. In fact, Vitamin B12 helps hair cells and hair growth by promoting healthy hair follicles through the production of oxygen-rich red blood cells.

The B vitamins arent the only nutrients important for good hair health. To avoid any vitamin deficiency hair loss, your diet should include nutrients like Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, iron, magnesium, and zinc.

Vitamin D deficiency hair loss is also a problem. Vitamin D nourishes the hair follicles. Vitamin D deficiency is also common in people who suffer from alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition.

Can My Diet Slow Hair Loss

As people get older, having healthy, thick hair often becomes a hot topic. For most people, hair grows around 6 inches per year. While hair loss can depend on factors like age, genetics, and overall health, what a person eats can make a difference. Vitamin A, biotin, and vitamin D, in particular, can all help to slow hair loss.

How Does Vitamin D Affect Hair

Vitamin D affects the health of many parts of the body, including the skin and hair.

Vitamin D plays a role in the creation of new hair follicles. Hair follicles are the tiny pores from which new hairs grow. New follicles may help hair maintain thickness and prevent existing hair from falling out prematurely.

Because of this link, getting adequate amounts of vitamin D can support hair growth and regrowth.

People with a vitamin D deficiency may have no symptoms, or their symptoms may be nonspecific and change over time.

Symptoms of a vitamin D deficiency include:

A lack of sunlight or not eating enough foods rich in vitamin D are the most common causes of a vitamin D deficiency.

However, some people may have vitamin D deficiencies because of another underlying condition, including Crohns disease or celiac disease, which prevent the body from fully absorbing nutrients.

People with an underlying medical condition will experience symptoms of the primary cause and symptoms of a vitamin D deficiency, as well.

Certain medications may also cause the body to break down vitamin D before it can be used. Medications that may cause a vitamin D deficiency include:

  • antifungals
  • medications for HIV
  • anticonvulsants

If a medication is causing a vitamin D deficiency or hair loss, a person should speak to their doctor about alternatives.

  • some fish, include salmon, trout, and sardines
  • nuts
  • cheese

Types Of Vitamin D Supplements

Vitamin D supplements exist in many forms. Consult with a medical professional before deciding if any of the following supplements are a good solution for you.

  • Topical creams: Hair loss can be treated using creams or lotions containing Vitamin D derivatives. One well-known one is called calcipotriol, which has been effective in some studies for treating patients with alopecia areata . Calcipotriol requires a prescription from a healthcare provider.
  • Oral tablets: Vitamin D supplements also come as oral tablets or capsules. You can find vitamin D2 and D3 supplements at your local drugstore. Keep in mind that taking daily supplements may help with an overall vitamin D deficiency, but there isnt enough data yet to show this treatment specifically helps with hair loss .
  • Diet: The best way to get vitamin D in most cases is from food. Foods that contain significant amounts of vitamin D include cod liver oil, trout, salmon, and white mushrooms .

You might be wondering about one we all associate vitamin D with: the sun. Natural sunlight produces two types of ultraviolet rays, UVA and UVB. UVB rays help your body make more Vitamin D. Most people worldwide get at least a portion of their vitamin D from sunlight, and where we live, how we live, and even how we dress affects how much sunlight we get everyday .

The implications of a vitamin D deficiency can be severe. But did you know that such a deficiency may also play a role in hair loss?

Vitamin D plays an important role in the differentiation and proliferation of keratinocytes . Researchers from the University of Texas and sought to further understand the role of vitamin D in the process of anagen initiation as it relates to hair growth .

While the authors determine that the vitamin does play a significant role in the process of hair cycling, they suggest that more research is required on the potential regulation of vitamin D to successfully treat hair disorders.

But how exactly does it contribute to hair growth?

As mentioned, vitamin D is known to contribute to the proliferation of keratinocytes. One way in which it is known to do so is by its induction of keratinocyte growth factor.

Earlier studies available from the US National Library of Medicine determined that the use of keratinocyte growth factor promoted the survival of the hair follicle, which further supports the role of vitamin D in hair growth .

Another role vitamin D may play in hair loss is discussed in research from the Turkish Journal of Medical Science that measures the effects of hereditary vitamin D receptor deficiency on an individuals hair growth .

Telogen effluvium is identified as a very common cause of diffuse hair loss by the Journal of Clinical & Diagnostic Research .

These systems vary from the simple systems based on recession of the hairline to more advanced multifactorial systems based on morphological and dynamic parameters that affect the scalp and hair. Most of these systems have certain limitations. Currently, the most commonly used are Hamilton- Norwood classification system for males where there are two areas of hair loss that gradually enlarge to produce recession at the temples and thinning in the crown. These regions coalesce until the entire front, top and crown of the scalp are bald and the Ludwig system for females which classify the Female Pattern Hair Loss into three grades depending on the reduction in hair density over the crown and frontal scalp with retention of the frontal hairline.

How To Raise Your Vitamin D Levels

Vitamin D is found in three main sources exposure to the sun that isnt impeded by sunscreen, your diet and Vitamin D3 supplements .

The standards on appropriate levels of Vitamin D supplements have changed a lot over the years. The general rule of thumb is to not exceed 4,000 IU/day for adults. Official guidelines recommend adults supplement with 1,500 to 2,000 IU/day. But not everyone agrees with those limits, particularly in cases where you arent getting much exposure to sunlight.

Vitamin D levels are measured through blood tests, and are considered to be inadequate if they are below 30 ng/mL. The ideal range is between 30 to 60 ng/mL, though people can have levels of 100 ng/mL without showing any side effects. Some issues can be seen if your levels are higher than 150 ng/mL, so be forewarned.

The addition of a daily, 1,000 IU Vitamin D3 supplement should raise your Vitamin D levels by 10 ng/mL within weeks. I personally take 3,000 IU daily in drop form, and find that amount keeps me in the healthy range for Vitamin D.

But generally speaking, Vitamin D deficiency and hair loss are more likely to occur if your levels fall below 30 ng/mL.

Is Vitamin D Deficiency Hair Loss Reversible

Vitamin D deficiencies and the correlation between vitamin D and hair loss

Vitamin D supplements could help if a vitamin D deficiency is contributing to your hair loss. Vitamin D can come in a pill, or it can be applied to the skin through creams like calcipotriol, a psoriasis drug that has shown promise in treating hair loss.

âSupplementing vitamin D can often be helpful since most people are deficientâalong with other key nutrients, typically iron, vitamin C, and biotinâin restoring hair loss. It certainly helps thicken existing hair,â Levitan says. âThe amount to take varies on the individual’s needs, based on who they are, sun exposure, and other medical problems.â

Getting 10 to 30 minutes of sun exposure is a way to get vitamin D, but this could raise skin cancer risks. The amount of sun needed to form Vitamin D will vary depending on your skin type, how much skin is exposed, and where you live. According to Levitan, getting between 800 and 2,000 IUâor 20 to 50 microgramsâof vitamin D daily is usually enough, and âtoo much can cause toxicity.â Some people require 5,000 IU daily to maintain optimum blood levels and Vitamin D should be taken in the morning with Magnesium for maximum bioavailability.
