Biotin Daily Dose: How Much Should I Take

Before taking BIOTIN for HAIR LOSS & HAIR THINNING

Medically reviewed by

Biotin, or vitamin B7, is a water-soluble B vitamin thats a popular ingredient in hair growth and care products.

While biotin isnt a proven, FDA-approved treatment for preventing male pattern baldness like finasteride or minoxidil, theres some evidence that it can help to promote healthy hair growth, particularly in people who are biotin deficient.

Weve covered most of this in our guide to biotin for hair growth and health, which looks at the most current research on biotins benefits.

Since biotin is a supplement rather than an FDA-approved medication, there are no guidelines regarding how much to take per day although there are recommendations from credible sources like the Food and Nutrition Board at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

This lack of concrete information can make it confusing and difficult to work out how to incorporate biotin into your hair care and hair loss prevention routine.

Below, weve looked at the data to work out how much biotin you should take per day for ideal hair health. Weve also listed some of the risks of taking too much biotin, from side effects to a range of issues biotin can cause with certain lab tests.

How Long Until You See Results

Most people wont see any noticeable benefits until theyve increased their intake for several months. For best results, you should be consistent in your intake.

If youre increasing your intake through food, youll need to eat several biotin-rich foods on a daily basis to actually ingest enough biotin to make a difference.

If youre taking a supplement, its important that you take it daily or as your doctor instructs you to.

Although research is limited, studies from 2012 and 2015 suggest that results may be seen in as little as 90 days.

This includes an increase in growth and shine. Its thought that the longer you consume a higher dose, the better your results will be.

How Does Biotin Treat Hair Loss

How much Biotin Should I take? Recommended Biotin Dosage ...

Biotin works to treat hair loss by improving your bodys keratin infrastructure, which is the basic protein that makes up your hair, skin and nails.

Without biotin your hair would suffer in overall quantity, texture, and strength. It is a co-enzyme necessary for the synthesis of fatty acids, amino acids and aids in gluconeogenesis. Amino acids make up protein, which is used to produce keratin, and hair shafts are composed primarily of keratin. Without biotin, hair follicles are weak and lose the ability to regrow new hair.

In most cases, people who do NOT have a biotin deficiency may not find huge benefits from using Biotin to help with their hair loss. As with other water soluble vitamins, as long as you take the recommended amount through a balanced diet, any excess vitamins will be passed through your system via the kidneys and will not be harmful.

Its always important to sit down with your doctor, or hair loss specialist, to determine the correct course of action based on your situation. The majority of hair loss cases are due to genetics, which may not show improvement with simple biotin treatments, so its best to consult with a professional before spending time and money on vitamins and treatment methods that may not work in the end.

Does Biotin Really Work For Hair Growth

Although its easy to find numerous websites touting biotin for hair regrowth , the official word from the National Institutes of HealthOffice of Dietary Supplements is that there is little scientific evidence to support these claims, and more research is needed before biotin can be recommended for any of these conditions.

We used to think that biotin worked for hair growth, but the science is more contradictory now, says Sandra Marchese Johnson, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist at Johnson Dermatology in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Research shows there is no to limited benefit.

Deirdre Hooper, MD, cofounder of Audubon Dermatology in New Orleans adds: Although some very small studies have shown some improvement in hair or nail diseases with biotin supplementation several studies have shown biotin to interfere with many blood tests, including thyroid and cardiac function tests.

Not everyone is so down on biotin, however. A 2019 article from theCleveland Clinic claimed that dermatologists have quietly prescribed biotin as a hair loss treatment for many years, even though the research hasnt proved its health benefits. Why? Because some believe it works and it is not known to be harmful.

How To Use Biotin For Hair

While most people can take biotin supplements without any adverse reactions, Phipps says that it’s best to pay a visit to your doctor before adding any supplements to your daily routine. “You may already be getting the biotin you need through your diet, so talk with your doctor about the best option for you. They may recommend certain dietary changes or a biotin supplement. Be sure to follow any dosage guidelines that they provide.”

“When we arent getting all of our vitamins from the foods we eat is when we need to take supplements,” adds Friese. “You can maintain a healthy biotin level by eating meat, eggs, fish, seeds, nuts, and some vegetables like spinach, broccoli, and sweet potatoes.”

If your doctor gives you the green light for supplements, you can find pure biotin at most drug stores and almost all vitamin stores. Phipps says it’s crucial to read all the fine print. “Although the Food and Drug Administration regulates dietary supplements, its important to read the packaging carefully and only purchase from a supplier you trust.” And make sure to follow the doctor’s orders: “If youre taking a supplement, its important that you take it daily or as your doctor instructs you to.”

Phipps notes that while most people can take biotin without any negative side effects, some people may experience nausea, cramping, or diarrhea. If you have any unusual symptoms while taking a supplement, stop using it immediately and be sure to make an appointment with your doctor ASAP.

Does It Work For Hair Growth

Biotin has become a popular over-the-counter supplement for hair growth, available in tablets as well as gummies. The real question, however, is whether it actually works.

There is limited evidence to suggest increased biotin intake promotes hair growth, but several studies show that it may strengthen the hair and help reduce shedding. Stronger hair means less breakage which, combined with reduced shedding, could help your hair look thicker or fuller even if you dont actually experience any additional growth.

For some women, thats more than enough.

In one 2015 study, women with thinning hair were given an oral supplement that contained biotin and several other ingredients or placebo twice daily for 90 days.

At the end of the study, participants taking the supplement with biotin and other ingredients experienced not only a reduction in hair shedding, but significant hair growth in the areas affected by hair loss.

A 2017 review of previous research found 18 cases of biotin use for changes in hair and nails. In all cases, the researchers found that patients receiving biotin had an underlying pathology for poor hair or nail growth. All of those cases showed clinical evidence for improvement with biotin supplementation.

Though there are a few small studies that show promising results, the National Institutes of Health has concluded that there is insufficient evidence to rate the effectiveness of biotin for the treatment of hair loss.

We dont recommend ittheres no evidence that its an effective hair growth supplement, and it can even be harmful.

Heres the reality: 95 percent of the time, male pattern hair loss is caused by a biological process that the vast majority of vitamins cant stop. That process starts with DHT, a male sex hormone.

DHT is a byproduct of testosterone. In some men who are genetically susceptible to DHT, it attacks hair follicles on the scalp, causing them to miniaturize .

Hair produced by those follicles becomes progressively thinner and may stop growing altogether. Read more about DHTs role in male pattern baldness.

Biotin, being a vitamin, has no effect on DHT.

Biotin is a B vitamin and it is an essential nutrient, meaning humans must obtain it from food . Food sources of biotin include eggs, fish, meat, nuts, seeds, and some vegetables. Required for energy metabolism, biotin plays an important role in many of the bodys enzymatic reactions. Biotin is probably best known for its effect on hair, skin, and nails due to the symptoms that occur when a deficiency is present .

Research to support the use of supplemental biotin for optimal hair, skin and nail health is limited. It appears that taking supplemental biotin may be of benefit only to those who have diagnosed deficiencies. Although biotin appears to be well-tolerated and non-toxic even at high doses, it still can have undesired effects. That is, at very high doses, it may cause clinically significant falsely high or falsely low laboratory test results. This can lead to an incorrect diagnosis.
