Don’t Use Too Many Products
“For some people, using hair care products can irritate the scalp and lead to itchiness or flaking, so I would always recommend that people streamline their routines and don’t use too many products. Once the itching and flaking have stopped, additional products can slowly be re-introduced to test how the scalp reacts.”
Re: Head And Shoulders Hair Loss
If you have scalp issues/dandruff that get fixed by the head and shoulders, and it would otherwise cause you to scratch/pick at your scalp if you didn’t use it, I would think it would help prevent hair loss.My brother and dad have been using head and shoulders for 10+ years, and while they don’t have “long” hair , they are not bald/don’t have bald patches showing hair loss, nor does it look like they have thinner hair than they used to.So I’d say unless your scalp is sensitive to head and shoulders, it shouldn’t cause hair loss.

When It Leads To Hair Loss
Patient’s content producer Gemma had been experiencing issues with a flaky scalp for several years. She’d been told by her GP that this was a form of psoriasis but the treatments she’d been prescribed weren’t working and she was worried it was leading to significant hair loss. We sent her for a consultation with Wong at London Bridge Hospital to try and get to the bottom of her symptoms.
After examining Gemma, Wong described her condition as ‘pityriasis amiantacea’ which means scaling of the scalp. It’s most common in people who have a pre-existing skin condition such as psoriasis or eczema, and was responsible for the hair loss Gemma was experiencing.
“Dandruff is not a serious condition but if left untreated for a long period of time, thick layers of scale can be stuck on to the surface of the scalp, a condition called pityriasis amiantacea. This can disturb the growth of the hair and cause temporary hair loss,” adds Wong.
Is The Shampoo Safe To Use Every Day
Some individual factors may make the use of Head and Shoulders shampoo more likely to cause hair loss. Though there is no conclusive evidence to support its claim, it may be best to avoid using Head and Shoulders every day.
Generally speaking, most adults can use their favorite drugstore shampoo without experiencing problems with hair loss. However, some people may be more sensitive to the active ingredients in a particular product.
As stated earlier, the Head and Shoulders contain zinc pyrithione as an active ingredient.
This chemical has been associated with hair loss for some people due to their genetic make-up. If you have a family history of male or female pattern baldness, you may want to take special care in choosing a shampoo.

Has Selenium Sulfide Been Shown To Cause Hair Loss
While selenium sulfide has been shown to produce some not-so-serious side effects, including hair discoloration, there is one side effect which just cannot be ignored hair loss.
Note: Hair discoloration due to selenium sulfide can be treated with the application of rubbing alcohol. Keep in mind, though, that alcohol is drying to the hair and scalp.
One particular study, performed by Archer and Luell in 1960, found that even just one application of selenium sulfide had a negative effect on the hair roots. This lead to increased dysplasia and hair loss.
Out of the four subjects undergoing the testing, increased levels of dysplasia from baseline were seen in days 6, 9, and 12 after the application of selenium sulfide shampoo.
For test subjects one, two, and three, this increase in dysplasia was still being seen 68 days after application!
Individuals with thick heads of hair may not be worried by the sudden increase in hair shedding.
Those with male-pattern baldness and already-thinning manes, though, may find the side effect to be a most alarming one. Especially since not only does selenium sulfide appear to lead to hair loss, but also to damage of the roots.
Of course, selenium sulfide isnt the only cause of hair loss.
So what is there to do if dandruff is the enemy, but so is selenium sulfide?

What Gets Rid Of This Acne
When you stop using the product clogging your pores, the acne will slowly clear.
Sometimes, its easy to determine the product causing the breakouts. If youre using a hairstyling product that contains a lot of oil, such as a pomade, thats likely the culprit.
Give acne time to clear
After you stop using acne-causing products, it can take 4 to 6 weeks for the acne to clear.
The cause could also be something less obvious. Many hair care products, including shampoos, conditioners, styling gels, waxes, pastes, and sprays, contain oil. Even shaving creams and aftershave can contain oil. Youll want to consider whether any of these products could be causing your acne.
If nothing seems the likely culprit, stop using products when you dont see one of the following words on the label:
Wont clog pores

Why Some Hair Care Products Cause Breakouts
When hair care products contain oil, the oil can find its way to your skin. Once this happens, the oil can clog your pores. Clogged pores can lead to acne.
When hair care products are the culprit, youll likely get whiteheads and tiny flesh-colored bumps called papules. These can appear along your hairline, forehead, or the back of your neck.
Use A Medicated Shampoo
If you havent already, try using a medicated shampoo designed to help with dandruff. Look for products containing any of the following ingredients:
- pyrinthione zinc
Shop for antidandruff shampoos containing these ingredients.
For mild cases of dandruff, you may only need to use medicated shampoo for a few weeks.
If you have light-colored hair, you may want to stay away from selenium sulfide, which can cause discoloration.

Recommendations If You Have Dandruff
Head & Shoulders has been used for many years in the treatment of scalp dandruff. It is also one of the most widely known treatments and is over-the-counter. All these factors make it one of the first solutions a man with dandruff is likely to turn to.
Yet there are other options available. For example tar-based, salicylic acid or ketoconazole shampoos can also be effective in treating dandruff. You will find many of these medicated shampoos sold in pharmacies.
Aside from shampoos and other treatments, good scalp hygiene is essential to controlling the symptoms of dandruff. If possible avoid or eliminate hair styling products like gels, mousses and waxes. These will leave your scalp greasy and susceptible to Malassezia.
Research also suggests the use of all-natural tea tree oil as an additive to shampoo which can help reduce dandruff caused by fungal infections . Another useful step is to reduce your daily amount of stress. Stress can contribute to dandruff as well as hair loss .
Can Head And Shoulders Shampoo Cause Hair Loss
Head and Shoulders is one of the most recognizable brand names when it comes to dandruff and dry scalp relief and prevention. Its the go-to brand for most people suffering from these conditions, but it has led some people to believe that the chemicals in the shampoo are causing their hair to fall out. But thats probably not the case.
Using Head and Shoulders shampoo is usually the result of person trying to get rid of some sort of dry, flaky, itchy scalp. Even Sophia Vergara can be seen proclaiming its benefits alongside her son in commercials displaying her long, flowing, shiny, flake-free hair. Dandruff, psoriasis, and seborrheic dermatitis can all cause these issues in the scalp, but they are all quite different in the way they affect our hair, which could lead to the confusion about Head and Shoulders shampoo itself being the cause of hair loss.
Dandruff itself is not harmful to the hair and will not cause your hair to fall out. Dandruff is an acceleration of the cell turnover rate in your scalp. Normally you dont notice the cells as they die and flake off of your scalp because they are so small, but when they die off at a quicker pace and they clump up, youll begin to notice them.
Psoriasis is even more inflammatory and can have thick silvery or whitish scaly or red plaques on the scalp and ears. Psoriasis is often also found on other areas of the body like elbow, knees, hands/feet, buttocks, and groin.

Can Dandruff Cause Hair Loss
Dandruff, as well as anti-dandruff shampoos and medicated shampoos, are not probable causes of hair loss. These treatments commonly use antifungal agents to address a potential fungal infection from Malassezia. You may see zinc pyrithione , selenium sulfide, or ketoconazole as the active ingredient listed on the bottle. None of these ingredients are known to cause hair loss. Some treatments contain salicylic acid, which can help prevent flaking by removing excess dead skin cells from the scalp. While these kinds of ingredients have been known to cause irritation, shampooing with any of them shouldnt cause hair loss.
Severe dandruff, however, can cause intense itching and scratching, which can result in damage to the hair follicles and subsequent hair loss, but its not a common occurrence. Hair loss associated with mild scratching is usually reversible once the itching and the irresistible urge to scratch are brought under control. However, damage to hair follicles due to intense scratching may be irreversible due to possible scarring. Seeking treatment for your dandruff as soon as you notice it may help alleviate the itching faster, diminishing the chance youd scratch enough to cause this type of irreversible damage.
So Whats The Best Way To Treat Dandruff
Depending on whats causing the dandruff on your scalp, the treatment may be straightforward or more complicated.
If you have run-of-the-mill dandruff or mild seborrheic dermatitis, you should start with an over-the-counter anti-dandruff shampoo. These contain antifungal ingredients like ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, or pyrithione zinc, which can help manage the yeast that drives dandruff.
