Can Ozempic Cause Hair Loss

How Long Until Ozempic Is Approved By The Fda For Weight Loss

Ozempic weight loss update

In early December, Novo Nordisk submitted a new drug application with priority review to the FDA. Under the standard review process, it usually takes the FDA about 10 months to review an application. But in this case, the priority review designation cuts that time down to 6 months.

According to the company, the new indication may include adults with a BMI greater than or equal to 30 kg/m², and adults with a BMI greater than or equal to 27 kg/m² who have at least one weight-related comorbidity, like high blood pressure or high cholesterol. The medication is to be used in addition to diet and exercise.

Assuming everything goes as expected, the new indication and higher dose may be approved as early as this summer.

What Can You Expect From Ozempic

Ozempic improves both fasting and post-prandial blood glucose concentrations however, based on its long-acting formulation, it has a stronger effect on fasting plasma glucose. You can expect your A1c to reduce by about 1.2- 1.8%, depending on the weekly dosage used. Ozempic, like other GLP-1 RAs, is associated with low risk of low blood glucose . One benefit of Ozempic is weight loss up to 13 lbs, which is considerably greater than reports from other GLP-1 RAs on the market.

Additionally, data from the clinical studies suggest that Ozempic reduces risk of cardiovascular problems including stroke and heart attack. Longer-term trials will confirm these benefits.

Like other GLP-1 RAs, a common side-effect of Ozempic is the slowing down of stomach emptying. In addition, mild to moderate stomach upset and nausea may occur. These symptoms usually go away within a few weeks from starting Ozempic. To reduce the indigestion symptoms, eat smaller food portions throughout the day.

What Are The Known Side Effects Of Ozempic

The common side effects of Ozempic at doses used for blood sugar control include:

  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation

Since the higher dose has not been FDA-approved, we dont have a list of known side effects yet. However, trial results suggest that theyll be similar to those above, with effects like nausea and diarrhea being the most common.

What Types Of Healthcare Professionals Might Be Part Of My Diabetes Treatment Team

Most people with diabetes see their primary healthcare provider first. Your provider might refer you to an endocrinologist/pediatric endocrinologist, a physician who specializes in diabetes care. Other members of your healthcare team may include an ophthalmologist , nephrologist , cardiologist , podiatrist , neurologist , gastroenterologist , registered dietician, nurse practitioners/physician assistants, diabetes educator, pharmacist, personal trainer, social worker, mental health professional, transplant team and others.

Are There Any Foods Or Medications You Should Avoid While On Ozempic

Diabetes Hair Loss Forum

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you are on Ozempic.

First, youll want to limit how much alcohol youre drinking while taking Ozempic, especially if you are diabetic. Alcohol can have an effect on your blood sugar, and there is a risk that it may drop too low in combination with Ozempic, especially if you are drinking on an empty stomach. Alcohol can irritate your stomach, too. This might make you feel worse in combination with some of the GI side effects from the medication.

Youll also want to exercise caution if you are taking any oral medications. Since Ozempic slows down gastric emptying, this can potentially impact the amount of oral medication your body is absorbing. And while trials havent shown this to be significant with Ozempic, youll want to make sure your provider is aware of any other medications you are taking before starting Ozempic.

If you are looking to combine Ozempic with other weight-loss medications, including over-the-counter supplements and herbal preparations, youll want to discuss that with your provider first, as well.

How Is Diabetes Treated

Treatments for diabetes depend on your type of diabetes, how well controlled your blood glucose level is and your other existing health conditions.

  • Type 1 diabetes: If you have this type, you must take insulin every day. Your pancreas no longer makes insulin.
  • Type 2 diabetes: If you have this type, your treatments can include medications , insulin and lifestyle changes such as losing weight, making healthy food choices and being more physically active.
  • Prediabetes: If you have prediabetes, the goal is to keep you from progressing to diabetes. Treatments are focused on treatable risk factors, such as losing weight by eating a healthy diet and exercising . Many of the strategies used to prevent diabetes are the same as those recommended to treat diabetes .
  • Gestational diabetes: If you have this type and your glucose level is not too high, your initial treatment might be modifying your diet and getting regular exercise. If the target goal is still not met or your glucose level is very high, your healthcare team may start medication or insulin.

Oral medications and insulin work in one of these ways to treat your diabetes:

  • Stimulates your pancreas to make and release more insulin.
  • Slows down the release of glucose from your liver .
  • Blocks the breakdown of carbohydrates in your stomach or intestines so that your tissues are more sensitive to insulin.
  • Helps rid your body of glucose through increased urination.

How Is Diabetes Diagnosed

Diabetes is diagnosed and managed by checking your glucose level in a blood test. There are three tests that can measure your blood glucose level: fasting glucose test, random glucose test and A1c test.

  • Fasting plasma glucose test: This test is best done in the morning after an eight hour fast .
  • Random plasma glucose test: This test can be done any time without the need to fast.
  • A1c test: This test, also called HbA1C or glycated hemoglobin test, provides your average blood glucose level over the past two to three months. This test measures the amount of glucose attached to hemoglobin, the protein in your red blood cells that carries oxygen. You dont need to fast before this test.
  • Oral glucose tolerance test: In this test, blood glucose level is first measured after an overnight fast. Then you drink a sugary drink. Your blood glucose level is then checked at hours one, two and three.

Medications And Hair Loss

Hair loss is a common side effect of many medications. Most of the time, these drugs only cause temporary hair loss that goes away once youve adjusted to or stopped taking the medicine.

These medications damage the hair follicles themselves, disrupting growth at different stages.

Two kinds of hair loss may occur. One is telogen effluvium, or short-term, temporary hair loss. This occurs in the resting phase of the hair follicle, but new hair growth continues.

Another type of hair loss often caused by medications is anagen effluvium. This is a longer-term type and often also includes thinning or loss of other body hair, including eyebrows and eyelashes. Anagen effluvium takes place in the hairs new growth phase.

Here are some of the types of medications that can cause hair loss as a side effect.
