How To Reverse Hair Loss Due To Stress

Seven Years Of Research

Botox for Hair Growth (Reverse Stress Related Hair Loss)

Like I already said, losing loads of hair really got me worried. Very soon after my hair loss started, it began to rapidly develop and I found myself totally unable to accept it

I needed help. And I needed it fast!

So, obviously my first approach was to ask the experts. Being very technically minded, the questions I posed to these hair loss professionals were quite specific* about the hair loss process.

* I wanted to know why the rate, region and age at which hair loss starts can vary so much. I also asked why the hormone dihydrotestosterone can be linked to both hair lossand hair growth.

I considered these questions extremely relevant to the hair loss process and, as such, quite straightforward for a hair loss specialist to answer

Stress Can Cause Temporary Hair Shedding

Even if you never developed a fever or COVID-19, you may still see hair shedding. Emotional stress can also force more hairs than normal into the shedding phase. And who isnt feeling more stressed and anxious during the pandemic?

Again, the hair shedding begins about two to three months after the stress starts.

While seeing your hair fall out in clumps can add to your stress, its important to try to de-stress. Only when the stress ends will the excessive hair shedding stop.

Treatment For Hair Loss

Most hair loss does not need treatment and is either:

  • temporary and it’ll grow back
  • a normal part of getting older

Hair loss caused by a medical condition usually stops or grows back once you’ve recovered.

There are things you can try if your hair loss is causing you distress. But most treatments are not available on the NHS, so you’ll have to pay for them.

No treatment is 100% effective.

How Does Stress Cause Hair Loss

Although the link between stress and hair loss had long been speculated, it was only confirmed by researchers at Harvard University in their studyCorticosterone inhibits GAS6 to govern hair follicle stem-cell quiescence, published in the journal Nature in 2021.

In it, the researchers began by removing adrenal glands from the bodies of mice. These glands are responsible for the production of stress hormones: corticosterone in mice and cortisol in humans. Their removal resulted in an accelerated hair growth rate, even as the mice aged.

Normally with ageing, the duration of the resting phase increases and the growing phase decreases. However, the opposite of it happened after the glands were removed. That led to the conclusion that the mere presence of stress hormones, even at normal levels, affects hair growth. However, when hormonal imbalance occurs because of stress, the follicles find it difficult to enter the anagen phase.

What happens is that stress hormones prevent the release of a molecule GAS6 from the dermal papilla. This molecule is responsible for activating hair follicle stem cells, allowing growth to take place. Because its not released when a person is stressed, hair loss occurs.

How Is Hair Loss In Women Treated What Medicines Or Supplements May Help

Treatment depends on the cause of your hair loss.

  • In cases where the loss is due to stress or hormone changes like pregnancy, there might be no treatment needed. The hair loss will stop after a period of time.
  • In cases of hair loss being due to hair styling practices, like tight braids or ponytails or certain chemicals, treatment means not doing the things that caused the damage.
  • In cases due to nutritional deficiencies, you might be told to take supplements. For instance, you might be told to take a multivitamin and three to five milligrams of biotin daily.
  • Minoxidil is approved for treating FPHL. The 2% or 5% solution can be purchased in stores. However, you have to follow directions exactly and use the product indefinitely. Dont use this product if youre pregnant, if you plan to get pregnant, or if youre breastfeeding.
  • The HairMax Lasercomb® low light laser is approved by the US FDA to treat FPHL. Another FDA-approved laser product is the Theradome LH80 PRO® helmet and low light laser helmets and caps.

Other medications that have been studied, but not approved, for hair loss in women include:

  • Spironolactone and other anti-androgens.
  • Steroids.
  • Other light treatments.

It is important to note that premenopausal women should not take medications for hair loss treatment without using contraception. Many drugs, including minoxidil and finasteride, are not safe for pregnant women or women who want to get pregnant.

How To Reverse Stress

This post comes from a recent Newsletter from Dr. Bauman that you can subscribe to here.

Hello, its Dr. Bauman.

Can stress cause hair loss?

Unfortunately, yes.

When youre under prolonged stress, it pushes large numbers of hair follicles into a resting phase .

Not long after that, these affected hairs can suddenly fall out when youre washing or combing your hair.

But thats not all.

Last year, a fascinating Harvard study shed even more light on how stress contributes to hair loss.

In this study, researchers subjected mice to prolonged stress over many weeks.

Whats interesting is not only did this stress shift the mice into telogen, forcing their hair follicles into a resting phase they also lost the ability to regrow new hair.

Why? Scientists believe that stress also affects the dermal papilla, a cluster of cells at the base of the hair follicle that acts like a seed for new hair.

Bottom line: Stress is simply terrible for the look, feel, and health of your hair.

If youre shedding more hair than youd like, and youve been under stress, its likely the two are linked.

Fortunately, theres plenty you can do to reduce stress, which can help you feel great and improve the health of your hair, too.

Perhaps the best stress-buster out there is getting regular exercise.

Meditation, acupuncture, yoga, prayer, and taking an afternoon for me time are also good ways to relax and recharge.

In that case, you may want to consider supplementing with ashwagandha.

How I Reversed My Pcos In 6 Steps

So how did I do it? And how can you, too, reverse your PCOS? Heres what Id recommend, based on my personal experience:

1. Get your hormones tested

Having a complete hormone panel run by your doctor is crucial to understanding what type of PCOS you have and what hormones need balancing. Some women have excess androgens , which can cause acne, weight gain around the midsection, facial hair growth and missed periods, while other women may be estrogen dominant , resulting in long menstrual cycles, heavy cramping, intense PMS symptoms and infertility.

Be sure that your doctor runs a complete panel that included estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, AMHA, DHEA and perhaps even your thyroid and insulin, as women with PCOS often have hypothyroidism and insulin resistance, as well.

2. Eat an anti-inflammatory diet

The impact that our diet has on our hormones is pretty amazing. To optimize mine, I followed an anti-inflammatory diet that drastically reduced my intake of gluten, dairy, inflammatory oils, sugar and processed food.

Instead, I filled my plate with plenty of organic, fiber-rich fruits vegetables and whole grains healthy fats and lean protein. I also incorporated lots of hormone-healing foods like spearmint tea, cinnamon, apple cider vinegar, bone broth, nourishing teas, collagen and adaptogenic mushrooms.

3. Take hormone-balancing supplements

5. Toss toxic products that disrupt hormones

6. Balance blood sugar

Thinning Hair Following Pregnancy

Other hormonal imbalances can also lead to hair loss, especially the wildly fluctuating hormones that occur following pregnancy and childbirth. It takes time after pregnancy for hormone levels to return to normal, so it’s not at all uncommon for post-partum moms to notice thinning hair or even patches of baldness. This often occurs about three months after babys arrival. Don’t worry as the rest of your body recovers, so will your hair follicles. The hair loss is only temporary your hair will grow back.

Why Your Hair Is Falling Out

You might start seeing more hair loss than normal thanks to the following:

  • Genetics.
  • Hormonal changes like pregnancy or menopause.
  • Certain hairstyles.
  • Damaging haircare like perms or bleaching.
  • Medications like chemotherapy.
  • Medical conditions like fungal infections or thyroid disease.

Working with a dermatologist, you can begin identifying what might be causing your hair loss. Your doctor will ask about your health, your medications and your family history.

I tell the patients to keep track of events that are unusual for them, for instance, a heavy menstrual period, says Dr. Bergfeld. So when we go back to look for triggers, well have some hint at what it could be.

Your doctor will also look at other areas on your body like your eyebrows, lashes, underarms, pubic area, legs and arms to assess if theres hair loss.

Many times, hair loss is an indicator that something more serious is going on.

Hair loss, particularly shedding, is just a sign that something has happened to the body, says Dr. Bergfeld. The hair follicle is one of the three fastest turning over cell lines in your body. Anything that affects your body and throws it out of balance will affect those systems. So shedding hair is an indicator that somethings wrong.

How Stress Can Lead To Hair Loss

You may have heard that stress can cause hair loss, and its true. While the first two causes of hair loss are genetically programmed, hair loss due to stress is environmentally caused and may be more easily controlled if the stress can be managed.

Excessive physical or emotional stresslike that associated with injury, illness, or surgerycan cause one of two types of hair loss:

  • Alopecia areata: This stress-induced hair loss involves a white blood cell attack on the hair follicles. With this type of hair loss, the hair also falls out within weeks , but can involve the entire scalp and even body hair. Hair may grow back on its own, but treatment may also be required.
  • Telogen effluvium: With this more common and less severe type of hair loss, the hair stops growing and lies dormant, only to fall out 2 or 3 months later. Then it grows back within 6 to 9 months.

Infections That Cause Hair Loss

A number of infections and illnesses can lead to hair loss. An infection that causes a high fever, a fungal skin infection, and bacterial infections like syphilis can all be responsible for balding or thinning hair. Treating the underlying infection can restore hair growth and prevent future hair loss. So your first step is to seek medical attention for the primary health problem.

How To Reverse The Damage

If you notice more hair on your brush or your hair looks a little thin, you can bring your scalp back to full health again.

First things first, you need to take a good look at your diet.

Stephanie said: Being back in the office can play havoc with your diet, as its more tempting to get stuck into sweet treats and sugary drinks when youre sat at your desk.

Processed foods can have a direct impact on the health of your scalp and a dry, itchy scalp can be frustrating and leave you feeling embarrassed.

These foods typically have very little in the way of the nutrients that our body needs to stay healthy, such as vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

The hair is the very last system in your body to receive nutrients , so if your body is not receiving adequate nutrients, your hair will likely be affected.

How Can Stress Cause Hair Loss

Can Stress Make You Lose Your Hair

Many people think that the idea of stress “turning your hair grey” or causing it to fall out is just a joke, but that isn’t true. Stress can legitimately cause you to lose some of your hair, and it’s more common than you think.

It’s called telogen effluvium. It’s the most common type of “diffuse hair loss.”

When your hair grows, it grows in three stages. Those three stages are:

  • Growth
  • Degeneration
  • Rest

The telogen phase normally lasts for five to six weeks. After this phase, it’s normal for your hair to fall. Most people don’t notice when the telogen phase ends because it’s just normal hair loss.

Telogen effluvium happens when the body is shocked by some kind of stressor. That stressor sends more hair into the telogen phase and keeps them there for longer periods of time. This may be due to corticosterone.

After this, the hair sheds all at once. Because the hair was shocked out of the anagen phase and into the telogen phase, there’s not as much growth to make up for the loss.

It’s difficult to stop hair loss from stress before it occurs because most people don’t know that it’s happening. There are few signs of telogen effluvium before the hair fall starts.

Common stressors that can cause hair loss include:

  • Chronic anxiety
  • Post-accident or injury stress
