Can H Pylori Cause Hair Loss

Can Probiotics Help Regrow Hair

H Pylori Causes Grey Hair & Iron Deficiency [How to Treat Grey Hair]

And the answer is the same: yes, probiotics can promote hair growth, but it also depends on other factors. And of course, there is also a scenario where probiotics could prevent loss without necessarily promoting growth. Those friendly neighborhood bacteria can potentially aid in the restoration and growth of hair.

What Investigations Are There For H Pylori

There are several tests available to detect the presence of H. pylori in the stomach:

  • Blood test This detects specific antibodies against H. pyloribacterium.
  • Breath test This involves drinking a solution of carbon labelled urea. This solution is broken down by H. pylori, and its breakdown products can be detected in the breath.
  • Stool test This detects H. pylori proteins in the faeces.
  • Endoscopic testing This involves the use of optical instruments for the visual examination of interior parts of the body. A flexible tube is inserted through the mouth into the stomach and upper regions of the small intestine. Small tissue samples can be taken from the stomach wall, which is then tested for H. pylori.

Blood test and breath test are often the first line approach to testing for H. pylori. Endoscopic biopsy is a relatively invasive procedure and is often reserved for patients who require endoscopy for another reason.

Emotional Stress And Your Hair

When you’re dealing with a life-altering event, like a divorce or break-up, bankruptcy or other financial problems, the loss of a home, or the death of a loved one, significant emotional stress can also disrupt the normal cycle of hair growth. Significant emotional stressors can cause temporary hair loss, but once stress is brought under control, normal hair growth is usually restored.

What Are The Complications Of H Pylori

If you are infected with the bacteria you can get a painful sore called a peptic ulcer. These sores form in your upper digestive tract.

A very bad ulcer can wear away your stomach lining. It can also cause problems such as:

  • Bleeding when a blood vessel is worn away

  • A hole or perforation in your stomach wall

  • Blockage when the ulcer is in a spot that blocks food from leaving your stomach

H. pylori can also lead to stomach cancer.

How to Destroy H. Pylori Bacteria

If you have a peptic ulcer and your gastro doc puts you on these meds, make sure to take vitamins C and E. And don’t forget about probiotics. Taking probiotics will help to replace the “good” bacteria wiped out by the antibiotic treatment. And you’ll want to get off that PPI as fast as you can as well.

In many cases, I have found combining mega doses of probiotics , the ulcer clears up on its own without antibiotics. And remember, mega doses of probiotics are ok — you can’t overdose on this stuff!

These symptoms can be present in a wide variety of gastrointestinal and other medical conditions. Did you eat something that didn’t agree with you? Have you been feeling more stress recently? If you are concerned about your symptoms, you should reach out to your doctor.

While the list below can be considered as a guide to educate yourself about these conditions, this is not a substitute for a diagnosis from a health care provider. There are many other medical conditions that also can be associated with your symptoms and signs. Here are a number of those from MedicineNet:

Different Types Of Alopecia

Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss, and there are two main types: alopecia areata and androgenic alopecia. Alopecia may cause hair loss only on the scalp or all over the body. It may result in thinning hair, patches of hair loss, some balding, or total baldness, and it may be permanent or temporary. There are numerous causes, including genetics. Talk to your doctor about possible treatments.

The Gut / Scalp Connection

Our digestive tract is connected to all body systems, especially our immune health. These key factors affect scalp and hair health:

  • We need a good level of stomach acid to absorb many of our nutrients
  • If you have high levels of inflammation in the gut it could be driving inflammation in other parts of the body, such as hair follicles.
  • Hair loss is common among patients with IBD, but loss may be reduced in those taking certain medication.

According to ancient literature, womens hair symbolizes strength, physical attraction, health, femininity, and even social status. Then as now, hair is a symbol of self, and our hairstyles are a powerful form of self-expression.

When a woman experiences excessive hair loss, it can ravage her sense of self and be so distressing as to cause depression, crippling anxiety, and withdrawal.

For most women with excessive shedding, the issue is one of genetics and hormonal imbalances. For these women, the hair-loss pattern is generally diffuse and there is thinning all over the head or there is hair loss at the crown and the temples .

Less commonly, the hair loss is due to an autoimmune condition and tends to fall into these categories:

  • Alopecia areata: patchy baldness on scalp
  • Alopecia totalis: total loss of scalp hair
  • Alopecia universalis: total loss, head to toe
  • Alopecia ophiasis: a band of loss above the ears, wrapping around the neckline
  • Alopecia diffusa: diffuse thinning

The American Hair Loss Association states that women comprise 40 percent of the estimated 6.6 million Americans who suffer hair loss. And were much more likely than men to search for answers. In my mid-40s, after suffering from mild alopecia areata off and on for 30 years, I graduated to the alopecia ophiasis pattern and became one-third bald.

In most cases, hair follicles can be signaled even if youve struggled for years and even if youre bald.

Health Conditions Associated With Low Stomach Acid

Low stomach acid levels have been positively linked to numerous chronic diseases, such as celiac, gluten intolerance, asthma, diabetes, Addisons and Lupus, as well as food allergies, osteoporosis, leaky gut, and eczema. This is due to the inability of the body to absorb essential antioxidant vitamins like C, A and E, along with the impaired processing of proteins that results from low stomach acid.

The connection between auto-immune disorders and Hypochlorhydria is linked to the suppressed ability to both absorb minerals and vitamins in combination with deficiencies in naturally-occurring amino acids. These amino acids help the body break down proteins that are essential to the formation and maintenance of muscles throughout the body.

Supporting Bh Therapy With Dietary Changes And Supplements

In order to maximize the benefits of BH therapy, you can work to include foods in your diet that are naturally rich in betaine, such as dark leafy greens like spinach, kale and beet greens. You can also increase your consumption of foods that have high levels of naturally-occurring acid, such as lemon, kefir yoghurt, pineapples, sauerkraut and rice vinegar, as these foods will help boost the acid levels in your stomach.

Many nutritionists and natural health practitioners also recommend the use of probiotic supplementation to encourage the fight against dangerous bacteria in the gut and repair cellular damage to the lower intestine probiotics can be taken in capsules or by eating homemade fermented foods.

The use of digestive enzyme supplements is also popular among people who are taking BH to resolve low stomach acid issues because low stomach acid and low digestive enzymes usually are concurrent problems. Many people have found that taking digestive enzyme supplements helps them digest their food better, leading to greater absorption of nutrients and reducing the risk of malnutrition.

Clinical Pathologic And Epidemiologic Features

Alopecia areata is perhaps the most common autoimmune disease, affecting 5.3 million Americans including males and females across all ethnic groups , with a lifetime risk of 1.7% . The most common presentation of AA is reversible loss of one or a few patches of hair called transient AA. More extensive persistent hair loss is classified as patchy persistent AA . Loss of all hair of the scalp is called alopecia totalis , and loss of all scalp and body hair is termed alopecia universalis .

Figure 61.1. Patchy persistent, extensive alopecia areata.

Loss of hair localized to the retroauricular area and occipital areas is called ophiasis and has a poor prognosis. Onset early in life, severe and long-lasting course , extensive disease, and associated nail dystrophy also indicate poor prognosis.

In AA a mononuclear cell inflammatory infiltrate attacks the hair follicle bulb, the factory which produces the hair shaft. T-cell cytokines and cytotoxic Tcs produce cytotoxic damage and disrupt the normal function of the HF. This leads to the production of thin, fragile hairs, which easily break off or detach from the follicle and fall out. Since the hairs which fall out in AA are in actively growing anagen follicles, AA is classified as a form of anagen effluvium.

Other hormonal imbalances can also lead to hair loss, especially the wildly fluctuating hormones that occur following pregnancy and childbirth. This often occurs about three months after babys arrival. Don’t worry as the rest of your body recovers, so will your hair follicles. The hair loss is only temporary your hair will grow back.

Inflammation And Hair Loss: What You Need To Know

Often inflammation is considered as an internal issue, but there are external signs of inflammation in the form of swelling and irritation that can lead to hair loss. While all inflammations are not created equally, they need not be bad as well. The immune system activates inflammation in the form of a defence system where the body stays protected from injury, illness and other toxic invasions. The cells and organs of your body are protected by a complicated cascade of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory mediators. In some cases, though, inflammation can be indicative of a serious problem. This generally happens when the inflammatory response is triggered due to various factors and is improperly regulated.

Standard Treatment Falls Short

In a recent study, Turkish researchers recruited 200 patients infected with H. pylori bacteria. They divided the patients into two groups. One group received a standard triple drug therapy. This means for 14 days they took:

  • 1,000 mg of amoxicillin 2x a day
  • 500 mg of clarithromycin 2x a day
  • 30 mg of Prevacid 2x a day

Now — you know just thinking about this heavy drug cocktail makes me break out in purple spots.

First of all, antibiotics upset your stomach’s natural balance of bacteria. Sure — they wipe out the bad bacteria, such as H. pylori. But they also wipe out the GOOD bacteria. This can lead to all sorts of on-going problems.

Second, as you know, I am not a fan of PPIs. These drugs block your body’s natural production of stomach acid. They also appear to increase your risk of getting a recurrent infection with C. difficile. They also increase your risk of fractures. And the longer you take them, the greater your risk could be.

As a naturopath, you know that I want to see you get off of these drugs — like, yesterday! Here’s what may help…

Symptoms Of H Pyloriwithout Stomach Problems

H. Pylori & Hair loss HELP

Why would anyone suspect the Helicobacter pylori bacteria, a bacteria that infects the stomach if they have no stomach problems? On the surface it doesnt seem to make any sense, but it will begin to make perfect sense to you in a few moments. The Helicobacter pylori bacteria, more commonly called H pylori, is a very common bacteria that is found in the stomach lining of up to 50% of the worlds population. It was first discovered by testing gastric ulcers. Findings showed that it was almost nearly always present when ulcers were there. And it wasnt just coincidence, this bacteria is the CAUSE of many stomach ulcers, but it also contributes to chronic health problems.

Interestingly, H pylori is FREQUENTLY found in the stomachs of people who do not have ulcers! But H pylori infection, IS an INFECTION and this infection causes inflammation in the lining of the stomach. Sometimes to a great degree, sometimes to a lesser degree. It’s this inflammation which causes any number of symptoms, or no symptoms at all! Generally none of which are consistent from person to person.

The most common symptoms of H pylori infection are fatigue, weight gain, depression, and chronic illness. If those symptoms sound familiar, its probably because they are the same symptoms of Gluten Sensitivity as well as being the same symptoms that approximately 50-65% of all Americans complain of on a daily basis! Coincidental? I dont think so.

Natural Solutions For This Condtion:

It is easier to treat an H Pylori infection the earlier it is caught and diagnosed. An anti-microbial nutrition and supplement plan is necessary for this issue. One could easily begin by drinking clean water with fresh squeezed lemon and/or apple cider vinegar throughout the day.

The organic acids in the lemon and ACV are anti-microbial and will help reduce the H Pylori count. An anti-microbial diet that uses lots of garlic, onions and herbs such as oregano, basil, thyme, ginger and turmeric in your meals will also help fight off this infection. Doing oil pulling with coconut oil 3x daily for 10-15 minutes of swishing will help reduce stress on the immune system and aid its ability to reduce H Pylori counts.

For individuals with a mild infection this may be enough to normalize H Pylori counts. Those with moderate to severe infections will need a specific protocol with intensive anti-microbial supplementation to get the H Pylori counts down low enough for the body to heal properly.
