The Most Common Reasons For Hair Loss

Introducing Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Scalp Care System

One of the most common causes of hair loss is stress and fatigue. “When you’re stressed, your body is in fight-or-flight mode and the response is to increase blood sugar and suppress digestion, so you can use all your energy to run from the tiger,” says Blaisure. While we don’t have any literal tigers chasing us in 2018, we do have traffic, lack of sleep, jobs, and poor diet to balance. Instead of sleep, we fuel ourselves with coffee and sugar-laden granola bars, causing blood sugar and cortisol levels to fluctuate up and down. This stress response impacts your hormone levels and can cause hair to shed excessively, she explains.

Diets high in refined carbs and sugar also impact new hair growth. “Constant stress affects your ability to digest food, which means the vitamins are used quicker and by vital organs first,” says Blaisure. Your hair isn’t necessary for survival, making it last on the priority list to receive nutrients. Vitamins and minerals are necessary for healthy hair growth, so a deficiency in vitamins A, B12, D, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids stunt the ability to produce new, healthy cells which slows hair growth, she explains. Vitamin deficiencies can be identified with a simple blood test and easily corrected with supplements. Talk to your doctor before taking any so they can prescribe the type and amount of vitamins needed.

What Does The Science Say About Tea

Here is another interesting bit of history. The Australian Aborigines used tea tree oil as a remedy for snake bites. For this reason, it was sometimes referred to as Snake Oil. When the US settlers arrived in America, snake oil was suddenly in popular demand.

Unfortunately, many of the salesmen selling what they referred to as snake oil was not tea tree oil at all and it did not work. This is where the pejorative term Snake Oil Salesman came from.

So what does the science say? Is tea tree oil snake oil?

The above claims linking tea tree oil to hair loss treatment are related to three supposed properties of the essential oil: antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiandrogenic. The science behind each of these is presented as follows.

    Tea Tree Oil Is Antiandrogenic

To date, there have been two primary studies suggesting that there may be antiandrogenic properties in tea tree oil. Most, if not all, of the claims of tree oils efficacy in treating androgenic baldness, cite these two studies as evidence. Both of these studies are presented below.

The first study was published in 2007 in the New England Journal of Medicine .

In that study, a group of pediatric and molecular endocrinology researchers at the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences showed that the topical application of lavender and tea tree oil-containing products may be linked to gynecomastia in three pre-pubescent boys.

They reached this conclusion by using cell culture-based assays to demonstrate that very low concentrations of both lavender and tea tree oils are weak stimulators of a biological process that increases three well-known estrogen-responsive genes.

They also concluded that the oils had antiandrogenic activity, substantially repressing the activity of four genes usually stimulated by the primary circulating androgen, dihydrotestosterone .

In other words, they found that topical application of lavender and tree oils seems to produce a combination of pro-estrogenic and antiandrogenic effects to cause the development of breast tissue in these boys.

What Are The Benefits Of Using Tea Tree Oil On Your Hair

10 Best Tea Tree Oil Shampoos

Tea tree oil can help with various ailments, such as dandruff and hair loss.

With all the severe chemicals found in hair products today, you could be stripping your hair follicle of much-needed nutrients. If you use a lot of products or dye your hair often, you can put your hair at risk of breaking off or falling out.

Using small amounts of diluted tea tree oil down the shaft of the hair will help prevent buildup of chemicals and dead skin. This keeps your hair healthy and moisturized, which can help it grow at its normal rate and prevent it from falling out.

Dandruff is caused by an accumulation of scaly, dry skin on your scalp. If left untreated, the dead skin buildup could ultimately hinder hair growth. A shampoo containing tea tree oil can provide both antifungal and antibacterial benefits. This means it will get rid of whats causing the dead skin on your scalp.

Note that if you have an autoimmune condition, are going through chemotherapy, have a genetic disposition to losing hair, or have hair loss associated with aging, tea tree oil likely wont help with your hair loss.
