Does Methotrexate Cause Hair Loss

Thinning Hair Due To Methotrexate & Simponi

Side Effects of Methotrexate

Now Im back on MTX along with a TNF inhibitor Simponi Aria. While fairly infrequent, hair loss is a documented side effect of TNF inhibitors which include major RA treatments such as Enbrel, Remicade, and Humira.2 While Im on a somewhat low dose of injected MTX, Im on an aggressive schedule for Simponi. And my hair has started getting thin. Ive been on all the original TNF treatments without issue, but this is the first time Ive been on both a TNF and MTX, so I think the combination is overwhelming my hair follicles.

Methotrexate And Hair Coloring

Does anyone have any comments about coloring your hair while on methotrexate? My hair looks dull and has some grey, I’m toying with the idea of coloring it . Will it work? Any comments- permanent vs semi-permanent, etc. thanksI immediately stopped all hair dyes when I was diagnosed over a year ago. But I didn’t color my hair until my 40s. I know it’s really gotten nice and glossy suddenly. Good question. CathyWhy did you stop. Are you saying i can’t color my hair now. I guess i have alot to learn. I am new at this. Please tell me.I take MTX and color my hair. Never had a problem. I know some of the others do too.I have read too many articles now about what hair dyes are made of, and decided to stop. There is also a small voice from the alternate healing world that hair dyes should be avoided. So, I chose to stop. I like it, my hair is doing fantastic. PS Milly – We will help you learn, as we are all learning. Take care ~~ Cathy justsaynoemore 39372.7014699074 Ok because i like to color my hair. I never did when i was pregnant. That was a long time ago. But i always fiqured what i did to my body was my chioce and if i was sharing that was a different story. So much to take in.I have been on mtx for 15 years and have coloured my hair during all of those years without a problem.I am coloring my hair while reading your post, I have never had any problems while taking mtx.

Hey guys!

How To Cope With Hair Loss

Keep your hair healthy and as thick as possible while being treated with these tips:

Practice good hair care. Use conditioner and dont rub your scalp too hard when shampooing or towel-drying. Avoid styling products and heat, and dont pull your hair back in tight pony tails.

Use a thickening hair growth shampoo. I found this stuff called Nutri-Ox, a shampoo, conditioner, and scalp spray, and using it my hair has started to regrow, Sharon C. told us.

With your doctors OK, consider medical hair loss treatments. I committed six months to a hair growth treatment program thankfully it worked, Deb S. told us. I also changed medication. My hair is back in full force, no more wig and Im still using the growth program.

Keep a positive outlook. Methotrexate improved my RA and I am able to walk, so considering the alternative of not taking it and having my hair back, I have learned to live with the thinning, Mariann V. told us. I wish it was not so, but so many others have far worse things to deal with!

Even if hair loss happens, some patients put it in perspective this way: My hair is still thin but would not stop my meds due to it, Mary J. told us on Facebook. Rather have less pain and no hair. No-brainer!

Besides medications, the treatment for hair loss can also include a hair transplant. In this procedure, small pieces of the scalp containing hair follicles are transferred to the bald areas. The surgery can be risky because it involves the usual risks of surgery, including shock and pain. Furthermore, it is expensive and is often not covered by insurance. But if you dont want to live with a bald area thats affecting your confidence and your appearance, hair transplant surgery may be the right option.

If the baldness is caused by a fungal infection, you can consider undergoing a hair transplant. In this procedure, tiny pieces of scalp are removed and moved to the bald spots. Despite the risks, this procedure is highly effective and is often covered by health insurance plans. A hair transplant can cost thousands of dollars, and you will most likely need to pay a large part of it out of pocket. The only downside to hair transplant surgery is the high cost.

Although alopecia is an embarrassing problem for many people, it can also be caused by trauma. People who undergo painful procedures on their hair may be at risk for traumatizing alopecia. This condition often results in thinning or falling hair. In some cases, the scalp becomes red and the scalp can even become inflamed. Antibiotics and antimalarial drugs may also be prescribed to help treat this disorder.

Known Drugs That Can Cause Hair Loss

Drug induced alopecia, hair loss that develops due to a side effect of medication, will often occur within three months after starting the particular medication, but the exact timeline will depend on a few factors. The type of drug, type of hair loss, dosage, and your sensitivity to the drug are all important factors in how severe the side effects will be.

What Is The Efficacy Of Methotrexate For The Treatment Of Alopecia Areata

Joly reported 22 patients with long-standing, severe alopecia areata who responded well to methotrexate, with or without systemic corticosteroids. A 2016 study suggests that long-term maintenance treatment is usually required to maintain hair growth. A 2019 meta-analysis including both adults and children showed that the response rate tends to be better in adults compared with children . Relapse was seen in 50% of adults and 30% of children with dose reduction or discontinuation of treatment. Adverse events, mostly increased liver enzymes, GI symptoms, and CBC count anomalies, were seen in 25% of patients. There was an average of 3 months before regrowth began, and complete regrowth could be seen after 10 months. Risks versus benefits must be carefully weighed before initiating methotrexate, and the patient must be warned about the high risk of recurrence if treatment is reduced or discontinued as this is a significant source of distress.

Hair loss is an unwanted side effect of methotrexate. There is no specific treatment to prevent hair loss. Some suggest taking leucovorin 8-12 hours after methotrexate may decrease this potential side effect. You will need to see your doctor for Leucovorin. The good news is once the medication is discontinued, or with time, the shedding will gradually resolve.

I also suffered from severe hair loss while taking mtx. My hair was long and very full prior to treatment, and became thin with obvious sparse spots and very unhealthy. I decided to bite the bullet and chop it off. I cut it quite short, and during the growing out time period it returned to its former health. I am still on mtx, but I think that after time our system is able to adapt to it somewhat. Although its scary and annoying, my experience was that time and patience were all I could give. Good luck!!! Fingers are crossed for you!! Meghan

I’ve been taking weekly oral doses of MTX for a cutaneous lymphoma for 14 years. My thinning hair led me to make an appointment with my dermatologist for next week. He is talking about prescribing topical Rogaine. I’ll keep the group updated. Nikki
