It started in the shower. I have thick, curly hair and am accustomed to shedding when washing or combing100 strands a day is, apparently, normal. What I was not accustomed to was when, around two months after I gave birth to my son last May, seemingly thousands of hairs began leaving my head every time I shampooed. Hair grows in cycles. While some of the hairs on your headare actively growing, others are chilling in a resting phase. Eventually, thehairs in the resting phase fall out, and new hairs sprout in their place.

This increase in shedding is known as telogen effluvium. It usually begins 1 to 6 months after childbirth. While it can last as long as 18 months, most women find their hair bounces back much sooner than that.
Some womens hair will always be a bit thinner than it wasbefore they became a mom. But it will return to normal phases of hairgrowth, Dr. McIntosh says.
Dealing With Postpartum Hair Loss
While postpartum hair loss is normal, there are medical conditions that can cause hair loss, such as thyroid problems or anemia. If you feel like youre shedding a whole lot with no end in sight, mention it to your doctor to rule out other problems, says Dr. McIntosh.
The only treatment for post-pregnancy hair loss, though, is patience. Theres no magic vitamin or secret supplement that can prevent the shedding, she adds.
If your thinner hair is bugging you, try a new haircut or invest in a volumizing shampoo. And look on the bright side: With a new baby demanding your time and attention, your hair was probably going to end up in a ponytail, anyway.

Can Breastfeeding Cause Hair Loss

On average we all shed between 50 to 100 hairs a day we just dont really notice. In pregnancy this number is less due to rising oestrogen levels. As trichologist Anabel Kingsley tells Bazaar, this keeps hairs in the anagen phase of the hair growth cycle for longer than usual hence why hair often feels thicker and fuller when youre expecting. However, once the baby is born, or breastfeeding is stopped, oestrogen levels drop and return to normal, causing about 50 per cent of us to experience postpartum hair loss around six to 12 weeks later.
