Can Medications Really Cause Hair Loss
Yes. Hair loss due to prescription drugs is a common side effect. When this is the case, it is often referred to as drug-induced alopecia. Alopecia is the medical term for baldness.
Alopecia from medication often presents in a diffuse hair loss pattern and has a nonscarring nature .
In some cases, loss of body hair, including eyebrows and eyelashes, is also a symptom of alopecia from medication.
In most cases, hair loss caused by medications is reversible once the drug is stopped. However, hair loss is also often caused by other factors such as hormones, genes, poor nutrition, and autoimmune conditions, among other reasons.
If theres already a predisposition to hair loss because of any of these reasons, it is possible that medication has just triggered alopecia, in which case it might not be as easily reversed by only stopping such medication.
Frustrated With Medication Side Effects
One of my frustrations with having an invisible disease is that its not always easy to know if a medication is working. Treating RA is not as easy as putting a lotion on poison ivy and watching the rash disappear. But even though most side effects are unwanted, many are visible indications that our RA treatment is active. Unfortunately, sometimes the side effects are bad enough that we need to make changes to our treatment plans.
If youre having unwanted side effects from your RA medications, be sure and discuss them with your rheumatologist. There are various ways to make these issues less of a problem while maintaining an effective treatment plan.

Hormones Related Drugs Contraceptives
Female hormones and male hormones are normally maintained in a delicate balance in women. When this balance is disturbed due to normal physiological effects such as menopause and pregnancy, it can negatively affect hair growth.
Hair is lost after 2-3 months of discontinuation of oral contraceptives. The effect is related to prolongation of the anagen phase, with increased estrogen levels. Using low dose estrogen contraceptives seem to reduce the hair loss.
The American Hair Loss Association describes the role of testosterone and its product dihydrotestosterone in hair loss in both men and women. It also provides a list of low and high- androgen index contraceptives.

The American Hair Loss Association recommends that all women interested in using oral contraceptives for the prevention of conception should only use low-androgen index birth control pills, and if there is a strong predisposition for genetic hair loss in your family we recommend the use of another non-hormonal form of birth control.
Methotrexate Can Cause Hair Loss
Methotrexate is the most commonly prescribed disease-modifying antirheumatic drug for rheumatoid arthritis. It causes hair loss in about 1% to 3% of patients.
Methotrexate works by stopping the cells that cause inflammation from growing and, as a result, can stop hair follicles from growing too.

Two drugsone used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and another for different types of blood cancershave shown promise in reversing hair loss characteristic of alopecia areata and related disorders, according to a study in mice funded in part by the NIHs National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases . The study was published in Science Advances.
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system, designed to protect the body from foreign invaders such as viruses and bacteria, mistakenly attacks hair follicles, leading to hair loss on the scalp and elsewhere. There is neither a cure for alopecia areata nor drugs approved for its treatment, though some steroid-based medications may help promote new hair growth without treating the underlying disease.
Previous research led by Angela Christiano, Ph.D., of Columbia University, tested the effects of tofacitinib and ruxolitinib on hair regrowth in a mouse model of alopecia areata. Tofacitinib and ruxolitinib inhibit the Janus kinasesignal transducer and activator of transcription pathway, which classifies them as JAK inhibitors. The researchers found these drugs promoted rapid hair regrowth in both mice and humans with alopecia areata when given orally. Even more robust hair growth resulted when the drugs were applied topically to the mice, suggesting an effect on the hair follicle itself.

Leflunomide can be prescribed alongside other drugs, but some such as the blood thinners warfarin and acenocoumarol and the cancer treatment paclitaxel can interact badly with it.
If you need to start these treatments, you may be offered an alternative treatment for your arthritis and a washout to remove the leflunomide from your system.
You should talk to your doctor before you start taking anything new and always tell any new healthcare professional who treats you that you’re on leflunomide.
Unless your doctor advises against it, you can carry on taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or painkillers if needed.
Dont take over-the-counter or herbal remedies without first speaking to your healthcare team.
Can I Drink Alcohol
Leflunomide and alcohol can interact and affect your liver.
It’s recommended that you only drink small amounts of alcohol when taking leflunomide, or that you don’t drink alcohol at all.
As a guide, you shouldn’t drink more than four units of alcohol a week while taking leflunomide.
A standard glass of wine is two units, and a pint of beer is between two and three units.
If you’ve ever had problems with your liver, you’ll probably be advised to avoid alcohol all together.
Talk to your healthcare team if you have any concerns.
