Although symptoms may begin to improve right away after the first infusion, it may take the full six-week period to get symptoms under control.

The maintenance phase follows the induction phase. During the maintenance phase, doses are given every eight weeks to keep symptoms under control.

Worries About Hair Loss As A Side Effect Of Ibd And Medications

During these shed phases, I worry about discovering a bald spot. I have friends whose inflammatory bowel disease has significantly altered their hair thickness or has left them almost bald.

With that said, hair shedding is a natural process that can ebb and flow. But that doesnt stop my irrational fears from manifesting.

I started biologic treatment for Crohns disease in 2013. As the years have progressed and meds have changed, my hair is noticeably different with each medication Ive tried.

Procedures with anesthesia due to Crohns have also created major hair loss for me and produced grays. Not cool.

It was exactly 3 months prior that I went under anesthesia for a colonoscopy and endoscopy, and sure enough bye-bye hair. I had a feeling this was coming.

If your condition is not due to a hormonal imbalance, your doctor may recommend treatment that includes topical corticosteroids. Topical corticosteroids may lead to red or puffy face and can reduce your immune systems ability to fight infection. In some cases, fungal infections, such as tinea capitis, can lead to hair loss. Fortunately, you can take antifungal medications to treat it and get a full head of hair again.

Hair loss is a normal part of aging, and there is no need to worry. In fact, it is perfectly normal for most people to lose a bit of hair every day, and it will grow back eventually. Some men and women experience hair loss as they age, while others simply have a genetic predisposition to the problem. If youre experiencing a lack of hair, you may have a weakened immune system, which can lead to hair loss.

For more severe cases of hair loss, a dermatologist may recommend a hair transplant. This procedure involves a surgeon removing plugs of hair from your scalp. It may take several hours and multiple sessions to complete the process. Its an invasive treatment, and may not be the best option for everyone. Your doctor will need to examine your scalp to determine the cause of your condition. In addition to a healthy diet, your doctor may recommend taking supplements of various vitamins and minerals.

  • Telogen Effluvium hair loss is reversible.
  • If you experience hair loss, discuss it with your doctor. Please do not make any decisions about your IBD treatment without discussing it with the physician treating it. This part is important, so it bears repeating in bigger letters:

To make sure Entyvio is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had:

  • an active or recent infection

  • signs of infection such as fever, cough, or flu symptoms

If you are pregnant, your name may be listed on a pregnancy registry to track the effects of vedolizumab on the baby.

Should I Expect Weight Gain During Entyvio Treatment

Possibly. Weight gain wasnt a side effect reported in clinical trials of Entyvio. However, mild weight gain has been reported since Entyvio became available for use.

Weight gain during Entyvio treatment may be the result of being able to eat more food than before. This is because Entyvio treatment is meant to relieve symptoms of CD or UC or induce remission. With fewer symptoms, you may eat more food than you did when you experienced symptoms. This could lead to weight gain.

Other medications that treat CD or UC may also cause weight gain. These include corticosteroids such as prednisone.

If you have concerns about weight gain while youre receiving Entyvio treatment, talk with your doctor. They can suggest ways to maintain a weight thats healthy for you.

The Initial Causes Entyvio Hair Loss

7 Tips to Hide and Prevent Chronic Illness

The main cause of hair loss is stress. While most of us shed about 50 to 100 strands of hair daily, we also continue to grow new ones at the same rate. This shedding is normal, and its perfectly natural to replace lost hair with new ones. However, if youre losing hair that is excessively slow or isnt growing back, youre experiencing hair fall. There are many possible causes for this condition, but theres no one single solution.

Tinea capitis, also known as scalp ringworm, is a fungal infection that affects the scalp. Symptoms include bald spots and patches of hair loss. Infection may be caused by fungus, and scaly, red patches may develop. In severe cases, sores may develop on the scalp and oozing pus may be present. Treatment with a prescription may be necessary, but the long-term results of taking these medications are not always permanent.

In some cases, temporary hair loss may be the result of a hormonal imbalance. While some women experience hair loss due to hormonal fluctuations, others may experience permanent loss of hair. These changes can be caused by hormones in the body, such as those produced by the thyroid or by the adrenal glands. In severe cases, the loss of hair is caused by medical conditions. Inflammatory diseases can cause an excess of androgen, a male hormone. High levels of vitamin A in the blood and in the body can also result in hair thinning.

Why Hair Loss Occurs

Not everyone on biologics experiences hair loss, but it certainly seems to be a common side effect I hear about in the IBD community. At this point, doctors arent sure exactly why people on biologics experience this.

Others suffer from hair loss due to the disease itself, especially when theyre in a flare or recovering from one. And some experience hair loss due to malnutrition or poor nutrient absorption from their active Crohns or ulcerative colitis.

Sometimes, it can be very difficult to tell what exactly is causing the hair loss. Regardless, its something that many people in the IBD community deal with.

What To Ask Your Doctor

Most often, side effects from Entyvio are mild and manageable. But sometimes Entyvio may cause serious side effects. Before starting Entyvio treatment, you should discuss your risk of side effects with your doctor. Here are some questions to get your conversation started:

  • What side effects am I at highest risk of based on my medications and other medical conditions?
  • What happens if I become pregnant during Entyvio treatment?
  • How can I best manage side effects that I have from Entyvio?

Skin Itchiness And Rash

Treatment with Entyvio can cause skin itchiness and rash. However, these side effects werent common in clinical trials.

In most cases, these side effects are mild. However, itchiness and rash may also be a symptom of a more serious side effect. This may include an infusion reaction or an allergic reaction.

What you can do

Because skin itchiness and rash may be a sign of a more serious reaction to Entyvio, you should tell your doctor right away if you notice these side effects.

If you develop itchiness or a rash during an Entyvio infusion, youll be treated at the office or clinic where you receive your infusions.

If these side effects happen after your infusion, make sure to contact your doctor right away. They may want to examine your symptoms in person. If your doctor determines that youre having an infusion reaction, they may give you certain medications before your next infusion. This can help prevent skin itchiness and rash.

Should Treatment For Crohn’s Stop Because Of Hair Loss

I know Im not alone in experiencing a significant hair loss due to their Crohns. And I know, from experience, that there are many who are experiencing the same if not worse, right now.

I also know for a fact that some will blame their Crohns or ulcerative colitis treatment and want to abandon the treatment because of vanity.

Im writing this in hopes that if you too are experiencing the same that you will know that you are not alone. It will grow back.

Ive seen far too many people comment on social media that their hair is falling out or theyve gained weight since starting treatment and want to quit. Please do not stop your treatment because of hair loss or weight gain.

While I do realize that my hair has vastly changed since starting this new treatment, I am the healthiest Crohns-wise that Ive been in 3 decades. Thats huge!

Its because of Crohns that Im on certain treatments. It’s because of Crohn’s that I do not absorb nutrition properly. So, I try not to view the problem as coming only from my meds. It took a while to arrive here, but now I blame Crohns for stealing my hair.
