Successful Treatment Of Lipedematous Alopecia Using Mycophenolate Mofetil

    Raúl Cabrera1, Jorge Larrondo1, Carolina Whittle2, Alex Castro3 and Marianne Gosch4

Accepted Apr 15, 2015 Epub ahead of print Apr 17, 2015

Lipedematous alopecia is a rare form of non-scarring alopecia described by Coskey in 1961. To date, 78 cases have been reported in the literature . LA generally starts from the vertex, with a centrifuge extension that may affect the whole scalp. Patients may present pain or pruritus along the affected area. Palpation reveals a smooth, diffuse and cotton-wool-like induration . Currently there is no effective treatment to halt or delay progression. The use of topical and intralesional steroids has, in general, had a negative response . High & Hoang reported no response to hydroxychloroquine in a female patient with LA and discoid lupus erythematous . Yip et al. reported surgical treatment with a successful debulking of the scalp after achieving inactivity of the disease, with no recurrence after a 1-year follow-up. We describe here a patient with LA who responded successfully to oral mycophenolate mofetil , an immunosuppressive drug not previously used to treat this condition.

    What Happens With Organ Rejection

Organ rejection occurs when the immune system attacks a transplanted organ. This happens because the immune system doesnt recognize the new organ as part of your body. As a way of protecting your body, your immune system will try to get rid of it.

This reaction is a natural process that happens in your body when your immune system detects other unknown substances, such as bacteria. However, with an organ transplant, this process is harmful to your new organ.

Even while taking CellCept or other antirejection drugs, youll likely have at least one episode of organ rejection after a transplant. Symptoms of organ rejection may include:

Its important to note that having symptoms of organ rejection doesnt necessarily mean that your transplant has failed or that youll need another transplant. However, if you do have any of these symptoms, tell your doctor right away so they can treat your condition.
