Roles Of Dht In Men And Women
Although, DHT is mainly the cause of male pattern hair loss and hair issue in women.
Still, the Biochemical is not inherently evil, as it has got certain roles to do in the body.
Both testosterone and DHT are androgen hormones responsible for initiation of sex features in males while undergoing the phase of puberty.
These characteristics are as follows:
- Responsible for body hair
- Enlargement of voice box and deepens voice
- Development of scrotum, penis, and testicles while sperm production starts
- Fat storage mode alters
Testosterone, specifically being a male hormone, is present in men in greater concentrations.
While it can also show up owing to genetic and related factors in females too, giving them body hair.
In later mature ages, DHT also aids in enhancing sexual health and fertility, while it also regulates muscle mass.
Alternative Treatments For Fphl
Low-level laser light therapy
Red or near-infrared laser light has been reported to promote tissue repair and regeneration and, more recently, low-intensity light laser therapy has been demonstrated to stimulate hair growth, probably by increasing the mitotic rate of the hair follicle stem cells or follicular keratinocytes . Additionally, LLL may modulate inflammation by increasing TGF-1 and IL-10 while reducing proinflammatory cytokines and prostaglandin E2 . Usually wavelengths between 600 and 1550 nm , emitted by helium-neon and fractional erbium glass lasers, are used. Several studies have shown that LLL may improve FPHL but the effect is generally modest and, in a male study, although hair count increased, no differences with global photographs were observed . Adverse effects are few but may include headache, erythema, pruritus, burning, pain, and mild paresthesia .
Platelet-rich plasma is produced by centrifuging a patients own blood, concentrating the platelets, and injecting the concentrate into the patients scalp in affected areas. In addition to platelets, PRP contains numerous growth factors, chemokines, and cytokines . Results are promising however, evidence is very limited and studies that have been performed have used different protocols without sufficient follow-up .
Why Do Some Females Have Elevated Levels Of Dht
There are a variety of reasons for elevated testosterone and DHT in some women. Here are some of the most common hormonal disorders responsible for DHT-related hair loss:
- Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS: This is a condition that occurs in women who have excess androgen hormones. It is characterized by prolonged or irregular periods, enlarged ovaries and unwanted body hair growth. Its also associated with infertility, type 2 diabetes, obesity and elevated testosterone.
- Hirsutism: This hormonal condition is caused primarily by androgen hormone imbalance. It can cause body hair to grow on the chest, back and face. However, it can also cause an increase in testosterone, which can trigger loss of scalp hair.
- Congenital adrenal hyperplasia: In many cases of CAH, the body produces too much androgen, which directly affects the adrenal glands and interferes with overall hormonal balance. Common symptoms of this disorder include early appearance of pubic hair, infertility, severe acne and masculine characteristics. DHT-related hair loss is also a possible symptom.
If you think you have any of these conditions, talk to your doctor. He or she may be able to recommend hormone treatments that can help restore hormonal balance and minimize DHT-related baldness.

Does Dhea Cause Hair Loss
The most common fear related to DHEA use is that it may cause increased hair loss, especially in high-risk males. However, most of these reports are assumptive in nature, and clinical studies do not show that DHEA increases hair loss. There is a reason for these assumptions.
Androgenic alopecia or male pattern alopecia is the most common cause of hair loss in men. It is a genetic disorder in which testosterone metabolite DHT causes increased hair loss in genetically predisposed individuals.
Learn how to remove DHT from scalp here.
Since DHEA is a testosterone precursor and may increase its levels in some, thus theoretically, it may increase DHT levels and cause hair loss. However, male pattern baldness appears to be related to elevated sensitivity of hair follicles to DHT rather than its higher level.
Studies show that in many with early onset of male pattern baldness, serum levels of testosterone and DHEA-S were well within the normal range. Moreover, there is no evidence that DHEA may considerably boost DHT levels in the skin or scalp. There are no reports from well-designed studies that DHEA may cause hair loss. Nonetheless, such an adverse effect cannot be entirely excluded in high-risk individuals.
In a four-month study in older men, who are more likely to be living with low testosterone, and at the same time with male pattern alopecia, 50 mg of DHEA did not cause severe adverse events or hair loss.
How Common Is Female Hair Loss
Just like male hair loss, female hair loss becomes more common with age. Studies show that only 12% of women between the ages of 20 and 29 show some degree of hair loss, from loss around the hairline or temples to diffuse, overall thinning.
On the other hand, women aged 80 and up have a more than 60% chance of experiencing some degree of hormonal hair loss. Because hormonal hair loss is partly caused by a genetic sensitivity to DHT, your risk of hair loss could be higher if your mother, siblings or other female relatives have hair loss.
If youre concerned about hair loss, its important to take action quickly. Because hair loss is gradual and affected by DHT, acting quickly allows you to minimize hair loss and maintain as much of your hair as possible.

Robotic Hair Restoration For Trans Women
For trans women whose hair does not grow back after using hormone replacement therapy, a robotic hair transplant can be an ideal solution. As with any surgical treatment, the same criteria apply as usual. So long as the trans woman has good donor hair the FUE option can be viable.
The combination of transgender hormone replacement therapy and hair loss still requires study, but the number of trans women whose hair grows back after hormone replacement therapy is encouraging. For those who dont experience improved hair quality after starting HRT, a robotic hair transplant with ARTAS® is a viable option.
Dr. Baiju Gohil is a board-certified surgeon and expert in hair restoration using the ARTAS® system. His commitment to patient care and quality has become known as the RHRLI Edge, which also includes a personal consultation for each patient by Dr. Gohil himself. How Dht Affects Your Hair
Now, you must be wondering how DHT levels affect women. Allow us to make it clear. The hormonal procedure of testosterone converting to DHT takes place in both males and females bodies.
Usually, women have lower levels of testosterone in comparison to men. But, unfortunately, even this least current level leads to DHT- related hair loss in women.

What Is Dht And Its Roles In The Body
To begin with, DHT is an acronym for Dihydrotestosterone, which is an androgen hormone.
It is produced by the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase on the male sex hormone called testosterone.
DHT is generated in the gonads, in testes and prostate in men while in ovaries in females.
Thus, it is also a sex steroid and an androgen hormone.
This hormone is more powerful than its parent biochemical, i.e., testosterone, and only 10% of it is converted into DTH.
The hormone links to the same locations as testosterone, but does so with more facility.
And once attached to some site, it stays there for longer.
Diagnosis Of Androgenetic Alopecia
In the diagnosis of androgenetic alopecia, data from interview and a characteristic clinical picture are usually sufficient. The most useful criteria in the diagnosis of MAGA include whether hair loss began after puberty, the location of its loss and the presence of thin hair around the top of the head. It is also important to determine its genetic predisposition in closer or more distant relatives. In doubtful cases, a trichogram, consisting of the examination of the roots of the hair, can be performed. Assaying the most important androgen hormones such as testosterone, free testosterone and total dihydrotestosterone is sometimes helpful . Other diagnostic methods include trichoscopy, contrast-enhanced phototrichogram , a daily assessment of the hair loss, wash test, reflective confocal laser scanning microscopy in vivo and trichogram unit area measurement.
In an examination of patients with androgenetic alopecia, the presence of characteristics associated with the coexistence of hyperandrogenism, such as hirsutism, acne, obesity or menstrual disorders, should be noted. If they are present, it is important to record the serum concentrations of free and total testosterone, DHT, DHEA, androstenedione, estradiol and prolactin and SHBG. In order to evaluate the thyroid function, it is also recommended that the concentrations of TSH, FT4 and FT3 are determined. Some authors suggest that further determination of LH, FSH and PSA in serum should then be performed .

How Is Hereditary Hair Loss Treated
Losing your hair slowly is a normal part of the ageing process for most men and some women. Treatment is not usually necessary. However, hair loss that occurs rapidly or early in life can be distressing. If you wish to slow or stop the progression of hair loss, there are treatments available.
Treatments for hair loss include:
- medicines, both local and oral
- wigs, hairpieces or hair transplantation.
Hair loss that is caused by a temporary situation such as illness, medication, stress or insufficient iron will stop when the cause is resolved. Read more about abnormal hair loss.
Dietary Protein Is Important
Hair is made up of a form of protein , the same one found in fingernails and toenails. There are also a number of other chemical substances such as calcium, copper, zinc and iron as well as a small amount of fat in hair.Everyone, regardless of age, should eat enough protein to maintain normal hair production. Protein is found in meat, chicken, fish, eggs, some cheese, dried beans, tofu, grains and nuts.

How Does Dihydrotestosterone Work On Female Hair
Since we mentioned that dihydrotestosterone is a male hormone, you may wonder how it can affect women. What many girls don’t know is that, although in smaller amounts, the female body also has male hormones.
And when female hair loss is associated with dihydrotestosterone, it’s usually because some sort of hormonal imbalance or increased sensitivity to DHT has occurred. It is also interesting to know that, in women, DHT can act differently.
Generally, hair loss due to the hormone dihydrotestosterone results in thinning of the strands rather than the hairline indentation that occurs in men. Other than that, you might notice a more dilated portion of hair or a thinner ponytail.
How Can You Treat Dhea Hair Loss
There is a widespread belief that DHEA may cause irreversible hair loss. However, such findings are not supported by clinical studies. These beliefs are made worst by faulty and assumptive reports on various online platforms, as they are not supported by clinical data.
Studies show that DHEA does not cause hair loss in females. It does not appear to influence hair health in men. Men appear to be less sensitive to DHEA than females, even on its high dose and long-term use.
Nonetheless, if some individuals feel that their hair loss was made worse by DHEA supplementation, they may immediately discontinue its use. Hair loss with DHEA will only occur in genetically predisposed individuals, and it remains challenging to treat.
Studies show that both men and women may benefit from the application of minoxidil 5% solution. At present, it is the only topically applied drug with some proven efficacy in the early stages of androgenic alopecia.
Another treatment option for androgenic alopecia is the initiation of anti-androgenic therapy. Generally, finasteride may help in men, but its role in females is less clear. However, anti-androgenic therapy increases the risk of sexual dysfunction and prostate cancer.
Those who fail to respond to finasteride may benefit from Dutasteride. It is many times more potent and has a similar safety profile to finasteride.
In women, spironolactone is preferred over other medications. It is a potassium-sparing diuretic with a mild anti-androgenic effect.

How Can You Treat Female Hair Loss
Regardless of the cause, the goal of treating thinning hair is to encourage the hair follicles to function to the best of their ability. Its important to have realistic goals: Of course I want my hair to go from puny shedding strands to 1970s-style Cher goddess hair, but alas, I know that is not going to happen. Before starting any treatment, it is important to consult with your dermatologist to make sure the treatment path you decide is the one that is right for you.
In the past, and during this particular bout of shedding, I took Nutrafol, a supplement that contains a combination of botanical ingredients and vitamins to support healthy hair follicles. It is formulated to treat hair loss in multiple ways, containing highly-concentrated botanicals to support hair at every stage of the growth cycle, Engelman explains. She also recommends Prose, particularly their Root Source product for those with thinning hair. The supplements are custom-made for each person, and theyre packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and plant extracts designed to boost our stores of nutrients and target the causes of thinning hair. They have been proven effective in clinical trials, and are a fantasticand healthyway to address hair thinning/loss, she says.
