How Does It Cause Hair Loss

Balancing Hormones After Nexplanon Removal with Supplements

Birth control pills can induce hair loss in women who have a genetic history of hormone-related hair loss who are highly susceptible to the hormones in the drug. Normally, hair develops in stages. The active process is Anagen. Your hair develops from its follicles during this process. This period may be two to seven years long. The intermediate period when your hair growth ceases is Catagen. It has a duration of about 10 to 20 days. The resting process is called Telogen. Your hair does not really grow during this process. In this process, between 25 and 100 hairs are shed daily, which can last for up to 100 days.

Birth control pills allow the hair to shift too quickly and for too long from the rising period to the resting process. This type of hair loss is called effluvium telogen. During this process, large quantities of hair will fall out. Birth control drugs will speed up the process of hair loss if baldness runs in your family.

For many women on birth control, hair loss can be an unfortunate issue. For newer advancements in birth control away from the pill, such as Nexplanon, hair loss concerns can remain but is Nexplanon any better in regards to hair loss than the pill?

Nexplanon is a birth control method that is an invisible implant under the skin, usually under the upper arm, which can deliver birth control for up to three years. While very convenient, it does not come without some side effects.

According to the clinical trials of Nexplanon, alopecia is experienced in more than 1% but less than 10% of Nexplanon patients. Like many birth control methods, this is due to the hormone changes that come from being on birth control this type of hair loss is known as telogen effluvium and it can happen as long as you are on Nexplanon.

Generally speaking, women who have genetic backgrounds that make them more susceptible to hair loss are more likely to experience hair loss when on any sort of birth control, including Nexplanon. While hair loss should stop once youve ceased using birth control, there are many individuals who do not see their hair return as strongly as before.

For these women, hair loss can be especially stressful. While there are many solutions out there that promise to restore hair from shampoos to supplements very few have proven, lasting results.

How Does Birth Control Work

Hormonal birth control prevents pregnancy by reducing, or stopping, ovulation. Ovulation is the release of the egg from the ovary. As well, hormonal birth control can thicken the mucus around the cervix, which makes it harder for the sperm to reach the egg.

The hormones found in birth control can sometimes affect the lining of the uterus, making it difficult for the egg to attach to the uterine wall.

It is listed as a less common side effect here: . However the FDA document does not list it but urges you to see your pcp if there are any side effects you are concerned with:

I’m not sure where the list came from as two of the side effects seem pretty male oriented “difficulty getting or maintaining an erection” and “difficulty with ejaculation” all of the rest seem to be directed at women. I would have it removed.

Ive had Kyleena for 6months and for the past month I have had major hair loss. Its not listed, but I believe it is common because I have two other friends that are having similar issues.

Problems During Insertion And Removal

Sudden hair breakage/ loss in children! Could it be a medical issue????

Nexplanon will be implanted just below the skin, so you can feel it at all times. If Nexplanon is inserted too deeply, it can damage the muscles, tissues, and blood vessels around it. It can also lead to unwanted pregnancies. Very rarely, implants that have been inserted too deeply can move to another part of the body and cause infections. If Nexplanon has been placed incorrectly, it will need to be removed and placed again. If theres ever a time you cant feel the implant, contact your provider immediately and use a barrier method of protection to prevent pregnancy until your provider confirms the implant is in the right place.

The Link Between Birth Control And Hair Loss

Birth control pills can certainly cause a bit of extra hair loss, says Michele Green, M.D., a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist in New York City. Hair growth occurs in phases, as it goes from growth to rest to shedding. “The reason that hair can fall out as a result of taking birth control is that the hormonal oral contraceptive can encourage hair to remain in the telogen phase for too long,” Dr. Green says. “During the telogen phase, hair is shedding anywhere from 25 to 100 strands a day and is not actively growing, meaning that we’re losing hair for an extended period of time. Sometimes, when women experience hair loss from birth control pills, the body just needs a chance to readjust hormones to regular levels.”

Most of the time, birth control hair loss is both harmless and temporary, typically resolving on its own. In some cases though, especially if there’s a family history of baldness, thinning hair can be concerning. In order to solve the problem, it’s important to understand exactly what’s going on.

What Hormone In Birth Control Causes Hair Loss

All birth control pills have hormones in that can cause hair loss, but the ones with the least likely to cause hair loss are norgestimate, norethindrone, desogestrel, or ethynodiol diacetate.

These pills are the ones that have the least amount of androgenic activity, due to their low-androgen index. Androgens, specifically di-hydrotestosterone , are the hormones that make the hair enter the shedding phase and stay in this phase, ultimately causing birth control hair loss.

How Long Does It Take To Work

How long Nexplanon takes to work depends on when its implanted .

If your doctor inserts Nexplanon during the first 5 days of your period, it begins working right away. In this case, you likely wont need to use another form of birth control to help prevent pregnancy.

If your doctor inserts Nexplanon after the fifth day of your period, it can take a week for Nexplanon to be fully effective. This means that for 1 week after Nexplanon is implanted, your doctor will recommend using another form of birth control to help prevent pregnancy.
