Why Is Dimethicone Bad For Hair

Although dimethicone is fine for use on the skin, things get a little trickier when using it on your hair, mainly because it can coat your strands and weigh them down . But, “if you have dry, damaged hair that’s prone to tangles, dimethicone can help create that sleek, slippery feel, making detangling easy and giving the appearance that the hair is super-conditioned and healthy,” says trichologist and creator of Colour Collective, Kerry E. Yates. “Dimethicone is also heavily used in styling products to help ‘glue’ the cuticles down to create that smooth, shiny effect in hair.”

But it’s this “gluing” mechanism that can also cause problems in the long-rundimethicone tends to quickly build up on your strands, preventing water from penetrating your hair cuticle, leaving your hair lank, dry, and damaged. The good news? Silicones can easily be removed by washing with a silicone-free, sulfate-filled cleanser. Yes, it’ll be stripping and drying, but it’ll also “reset” your strands, so if you’re a big silicone user, try a reset wash once every few weeks to clear the buildup.

As far as worries of hair loss go, Dr. Bhanusali says dimethicone is not really something they consider or worry about, but as trichologist and creator of Colour Collective, Kerry E. Yates, explains it, the concern with dimethicone in hair products has more to do with the effect it has on the health and quality of your strands.

Why Should You Choose Silicone

Can Toxic Silicone in Hair Products Cause Hair Loss & Hair ...

Even though silicone shampoos and conditioners can give you temporary shine and smoothness, their regular use can damage your hair. Silicones act as a layer of thick grease and do not allow external hydrating products to penetrate your hair. This may cause your scalp to start producing more sebum, which, in turn, can worsen dandruff and other scalp infections. On the long run, silicones can also dry out your hair shaft, making it brittle and dull.

Another reason why you should use silicone-free shampoos or conditioners is that many silicones are not water-soluble. They cannot be washed away with water. Eventually, they will cause excess buildup on your scalp, which can cause problems such as weak hair follicles, split ends, frizzy hair, and more.

Silicones can help tame your tresses, but they also weigh them down and can affect hair volume.

If you do not want to get stuck in this vicious cycle, it is best to switch to natural products that can help make your hair healthy and shiny in a safe way.

Why Manufacturers Love Dimethicone

Dimethicone is an emollient. It possesses conditioning and anti-caking properties. It gives smooth, silky texture to a cream or shampoo. Thats why when you use a foundation containing this ingredients, your skin becomes silky to touch. When used in hair shampoos, it renders hair extra silky and shiny.

However, dimethicone is insoluble in water.

And this is where all the trouble starts.

Using hair products containing dimethicone regularly can lead to a buildup of this synthetic ingredient on your scalp. This can choke follicles over time. As a result, it can trigger hair loss.

So, for those wondering, can dimethicone cause hair loss, the answer is yes. But it wont cause your hair to fall in a single or short-term use.

In fact, if we analyze the ingredient, we will find that dimethicone, in itself, is not a harmful ingredient. On the other hand, it is non-comadogenic, which means it does not clog pores. It is non-sticky. It helps to trap moisture in skin or hair. It helps to give skin a fresher, plumper look. It renders hair shiny and silky.

So, overall, this ingredient does not mean to harm your hair or skin in any way.

The only harm that happens is when this ingredient accumulates on the skin. And if it does on scalp skin, it may hinder normal follicle functioning over time.

It is impossible to wash off dimethicone from hair because it is not soluble in water.

What Problems Do Silicones Cause

They are drying to the hair

Silicones coat the hair shaft in a thin film, which is a good thing if you want to smooth over frizz. However, this can also hold dirt and prevent absorption from additional products such as water, conditioner agents and moisture from penetrating the surface of the hair, which can, in turn, lead to weakened hair.

In an attempt to make your hair feel less dry, you may want to over-condition by leaving a silicone conditioner on your hair for longer. This can lead to hygral fatigue and hygral fatigue can lead to weaker hair, which leads to breakage, and so on and so forth.

With a silicone-free conditioner like Swirl, you dont have to sacrifice slip for shine or vice versa. Your hair is well taken care of in the short term and in the long term.

Not all silicones are water or shampoo soluble

This means that if you are using a silicone-based conditioner and thoroughly rinsing your hair after conditioning, there is a chance that the silicone wont completely wash away. As the product builds up on your hair strand, it can leave your hair dull and lifeless and weigh your hair down. Over time, this can lead to breakage.

It is for this reason that we recommend taking extra care to not condition your scalp. Leaving alkaline and silicone residue on your scalp can, over time, become an irritant, disturbs the acid mantle of your scalp and lead to itchiness.

There Are Good And Bad Silicones For Hair

The main objective of a silicone for hair care products is to seal and protect the hair. They create a barrier around the hair strand that keeps moisture in and the elements out. The barrier helps hair from being damaged by heat styling tools like curling irons, wands, and flat irons, but just like silicones are great for hair, they also have a downside.
