Minoxidil For Hair Loss

Minoxidil for Hair Loss

Conveniently located to serve the areas of Austin, San Antonio and Houston, Texas

One of the first medications people suffering from hair loss turn to is a simple over-the-counter solution called minoxidil. However, youre likely to recognize it by its most popular brand name: Rogaine.

Minoxidil has been on the market for quite some time, and was first used in the form of a pill under the brand named Loniten to treat hypertension . Much like with finasteride trials that were testing the drug for treatment of enlarged prostate glands, some of the participants in Loniten trails reported additional hair growth but this time, in strange places. In this case, participants reported extra hair on their cheeks, back of the hands, and the forehead.

Of course, this led to some in the medical research community questioning whether or not minoxidil would be an effective hair growth stimulant if used more intentionally. For example, if the medication were say, a cream applied directly to a balding scalp.

Were proud to be the hair transplant surgeons of choice for pro athletes, actors & celebrities.

Needless to say, the pharmaceutical company was inundated with volunteers for the topical minoxidil clinical trials. It took a while to get the product to market, but , Rogaine was available via prescription for topical use in men. In 1991, its use was expanded to women. And in 1996, the FDA made it available over-the-counter.

  • 3 Are You Ready to Take the Next Step?
  • Is Rogaine Worth It

Rogaine is clinically proven to regrow your hair, so we believe that this product is worth it. This review notes that the products will not work for everyone, and they do come with some potentially serious side effects.

If you experience any of the following when using Rogaine, stop use immediately and consult your doctor:

    • Chest pain
    • Scalp irritation and redness
    • Unwanted facial hair

Does Rogaine work? There is a possibility that their products will not work for you, but 90% of men and 80% of women saw results when using the product as recommended.

In terms of the risk, we havent come across many reviews that speak of negative Rogaine side effects, but users should keep in mind that they can occur.

In terms of price, trying Rogaine is fairly low-cost, as the price per month is just $28 about a weeks worth of lattes from your favorite coffee shop.

With all that in mind, we do think Rogaine is worth the buy because the results are real, but keep an eye out for possible side effects.

Minimize The Risk Of Side Effects:

The best way to minimize the risk of side effects associated with Rogaine Minoxidil for hair loss in women is to follow the recommended dosage. As mentioned earlier, the dosage for hair loss in women should not exceed 2% of the usual dosage. While higher doses can reduce blood pressure, this treatment may cause dangerous side effects if you overdose. The manufacturer recommends that patients apply the medication twice a day, in the morning and night.

The only study that compares the side effects of Rogaine Minoxidil for hair loss in women included a study comparing topical and oral applications. In the study, topical application of Rogaine Minoxidil was more effective than the oral solution, and the results were consistent. Rogaine Minoxidil for Hair Loss in Women can help with hair loss for both men and women. The medication has a few side effects. Rogaine Minoxidil for women has the side effects of hair loss.

Is Minoxidil Effective For A Receding Hairline

Minoxidil works by improving blood flow to the area in which its applied. Apply it to your scalp and it can potentially improve hair density and increase the rate of growth.

As such, theres no reason minoxidil shouldnt work for a receding hairline. The hair follicles in your hairline arent significantly different from the others on your scalp or crown, meaning that you should still experience the benefits of minoxidil when you apply it to your hairline.

There are also countless anecdotal cases of people with receding hairlines improving growth and increasing thickness by using minoxidil.

However, right now there isnt much detailed scientific research on the effects of minoxidil on the hairline.

As such, its best to view minoxidil as something with potential benefits, instead of as a guaranteed way to regrow your hairline.

How Long Does This Minoxidil Shedding Last

    Men

Everything weve discussed so far probably has you wondering if minoxidil is worth the trouble. The good news is that minoxidil shedding does end for most men. It typically only occurs at the beginning of your treatment. To be more specific, research shows that it generally starts two to eight weeks after beginning the treatment.

After that, the shedding should subside. Continue to apply minoxidil as directed and remain patient. Most men start to see results in 4-6 months, with some men needing up to a year to see the real impact of the treatment.

How To Use Minoxidil For Hair

Unless you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, minoxidil should be safe for you to use. The OG minoxidil product is Rogaine, and there are versions oriented toward women formulated with two percent and five percent of the ingredient, in both liquid and foam. Hers offers hair regrowth drops with two percent minoxidil. While both products are very similar, Hers is a tiny bit cheaper and has an overall more pleasant look. Rogaine is more widely available at pharmacies and on Amazon, while Hers must be ordered directly from the brand online.

Directions will vary depending on the product most serums are topically applied. For a product like Hers, follow these steps:

    • Apply about 1 ml of product to the scalp on damp or dry hair
    • Do not wash out for at least four hours
    • Repeat twice a day

Since hair loss is complex and can be triggered by a number of factorsstress, changes in your hormones, recent illness, vegetarian or low protein diets, and rapid weight lossBrenda Dintiman, a Virginia-based dermatologist, advises that if youre experiencing serious hair loss, youd be wise to consult a professional. A board-certified dermatologist can sort out whats causing your hair loss and combine topical minoxidil with supplements like vitamin D and dietary recommendations to get your hair glossy, growing, and full again,” she says.

    What Most Studies Dont Say

Minoxidil is highly likely to promote hair growth for male patients with pattern baldness.

As the results of most studies suggest improvements in hair density and count alongside better coverage on bald areas, the hairline is not restored or frontal hair loss is not reversed.

Also, patients are expected to keep using minoxidil to avoid further hair loss for years, as men who stopped using minoxidil observed rapid hair loss after the discontinuation of the drug. In fact, for the majority of these patients, hair counts were below the numbers that were recorded when they started using minoxidil in the first place.

Minoxidil is not the perfect method to regrow your lost hair.

And when it comes to stopping hair loss, its not the best method for everyone:

    Do Studies Support The Claims

According to some scientific evidence, rosemary may benefit nerve tissue.

Carnosic acid, an active ingredient in the plant, healed tissue and nerve damage in a study. This ability to heal nerve endings can also rejuvenate the nerves in the scalp, which in turn may restore hair growth.

More revealing recent studies show that rosemary provides direct protection against hair loss. A 2015 tentative study tested the essential oil against minoxidil, known commercially as Rogaine. Both were used on human subjects with androgenetic alopecia .

The results showed that rosemary oil was just as effective as minoxidil. During the process, minoxidil also helped itchy scalp more successfully than minoxidil.

Another study showed that rosemary extract stimulated hair growth. This occurred when the hair loss was caused by testosterone . However, this study was carried out on mice.

Two separate clinical studies one from 2010 and one from 2011 also confirm rosemarys hair growth potential. The former cites a study of successful hair growth in people with alopecia who used essential oils. One of these essential oils was rosemary.

In the latter study, rosemary essential oil was described as a remedy for hair loss recovery. This was due to its effect on blood circulation.

Do Hair Growth Products Like Shampoos Actually Work

Does Minoxidil (Rogaine) Work for Frontal Baldness?

One of the most common ingredients advertised on hair growth shampoo bottles is biotin, a B-vitamin found in egg yolks, liver, and yeast thought to strengthen hair and nail proteins. Dihydrotestosterone blockers are another set of common ingredients you’ll see. DHT is a derivative of testosterone that can combine with enzymes in the hair follicle to reduce its size and make it impossible for healthy hair to grow. DHT blockers are believed to prevent DHT from attaching to the hair follicle, instead leaving the follicle wide open for growth.

While it’s true that DHT blockers may prevent hair from falling out, it is still unclear whether they can help generate new hair growth. As for biotin, despite its popularity among consumers, there has not been enough formal data that supports it as a hair growth supplement. Keep in mind that, like eyelash growth serums, if a product is “able to claim hair growth, it would have to be regulated as a drug by the FDA,” says Birnur Aral, Ph.D., director of the Beauty Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute.

    How To Apply Rogaine Liquid

If youre choosing Rogaine liquid over Rogaine foam, knowing how to apply, it maximizes your hair growth effects and reduces the risk of side effects. First of all, its important to note that you should avoid using Rogaine liquid alongside substances such as hair dye. If you do dye your hair, wait for 24 hours between doing so and applying Rogaine liquid.

Now, for applying that topical solution:

    • Keep your scalp and hair completely dry. This allows for maximum absorption.
    • Apply the prescribed amount to your hair. If you have a lot of hair, make sure you spread the solution evenly for maximum results.
    • Allow it to soak in for four hours. Its for this reason that Rogaine liquid is usually best used at night.

Can Rosemary Oil Treat Hair Loss

The idea that rosemary oil promotes hair growth could stem from rosemarys basic health benefits. These properties are attributed to rosemary oil:

natural DHT blockerpromoting nerve growthimproving blood circulation

Like peppermint essential oil , rosemary essential oil strengthens blood circulation. By doing this, it can prevent the hair follicles from becoming blood-deficient, dying and leading to hair loss.

In addition to stimulating hair growth, the essential oil of rosemary is also used to prevent premature graying and dandruff. It can also help with a dry or itchy scalp.

Rogaine Foam Vs Liquid For Long Hair

If you have long hair and youre trying to choose between foam and liquid, you may want to consider the application logistics. While none of the studies states which preparation is better, you may find that liquid is more comfortable to use.

As the last study we cited mentioned that some people prefer the foam preparation because it doesnt drip everywhere, this could work to your advantage if your hair is long. Applying foam to your scalp relies on you being able to visualize where the preparation goes. If your hair is long, it may be easier to achieve an even distribution with liquid Rogaine.

On the other side of the argument, if you have long hair and you want to style it in the morning, you may find that foam is easier to work with. It doesnt take as long to soak in. If you want to have the best of both worlds, consider using a foam preparation in the morning for convenience and liquid in the evening to achieve even distribution.
