Ask An Expert: Is It Actually Possible To Regrow Hair

Every guy is at risk of losing his hair, some more quickly than others. It sucks. The follicle itself shrivels up and is rendered incapable of regrowing anything. This type of hair loss is called androgenetic alopecia, often referred to as male pattern baldness. This plays out in two ways: the thinning of each hair and the overall loss of density. But, in certain cases of alopecia, these losses are not truly permanent. At least, not right away. Sometimes, it can be slowed down or delayed.

So there’s hope! If youve been losing hair or if you think youre at risk of hair loss of thinning, then read on for some possible fixes. The insight and advice comes from Dr. Francesco Fusco, MD of Wexler Dermatology in NYC. His main point? You’ve got to be proactive.

Fusco says that theres something called miniaturization happening at the follicular level when a hair falls out. Miniaturization refers to the slow shrinking of the hair follicle and the diminution of the hair within, until eventually the follicle no longer exists, she says. The remaining tiny hair falls out and nothing grows back. She says that this is often genetic and caused by a hormone called dihydrotestosterone , which is a byproduct of testosterone. DHT clings to the follicle and then slowly shrinks it. This most commonly happens at the temples, the crown, and the front of the head.

Ayurvedic Treatments With Dht Controlling Herbs

A. Nasya

Nasya kriya, i.e. inhaling medicated oils into your respiratory tract, is one of the prominent Ayurvedic methods to treat DHT Hair loss. It is the fastest way for oils to enter into your nerve receptors.

“Through your olfactory system, the oils reach your blood circulatory system, from where the oil molecules can bind to your scalp receptors and change its chemical composition. Thus, it can prevent your scalp receptors from getting blocked with DHT molecules,” says Dr. Zeel.

Performing Nasya regularly with anu taila or sesame oil, which are efficient DHT blockers, promotes healthy hair growth while keeping your Pitta in balance.

Vedix Tip: Preferably, Nasya karma has to be performed on an empty stomach after bowel evacuation in the morning. And, you should not eat anything or take a bath at least for 30 minutes after doing Nasya.

B. Oil Massage

Use Ayurvedic oils that contain DHT controlling herbal ingredients to massage your scalp and hair regularly. Warm oils applied to your scalp carry the DHT blocking herbs into the deeper tissues of your scalp. On the other side, massaging enhances the blood circulation to your scalp follicles. Thus, your hair follicles are nourished with essential nutrients while DHT binding is prevented.

C. Regular Hair Cleansing

Use hair cleansers containing DHT controlling herbs to wash your hair regularly. Ayurvedic hair cleansers unclog your follicles without stripping off the natural oils of your scalp.

Androgenetic Alopecia And Dht

In women, testosterone is normally only present in small amounts, however, an imbalance of testosterone in women could trigger DHT driven hair loss. This type of hair loss is called androgenic alopecia , also known as female pattern hair loss.

Androgenic alopecia is caused by androgens like DHT and can affect both men and women. In the U.S, the type of hair loss affects 50 million men and 30 million women to some degree.

For women, this is characterized by the overall thinning of the hair as opposed to receding hairline male pattern baldness.

Dht Blocker To Try Today

Fortunately, Dihydrotestosterone can be removed by the use of a good DHT blocker. A DHT blocker is usually a form of natural treatment and can be easily accessible. Some powerful and known DHT blockers are pumpkin seeds, beta sitosterols and green tea.

You’ll be surprised that certain fruits found at your local grocery also contains great DHT blockers. Fruits like tomato and mango all make good a good DHT blocker as they contain Lycopene. This gets rid of the 5-AR enzyme thus, preventing the formation of DHT.

On the 3 aforementioned DHT blockers, here is a general explanation of how they fight off Dihydrotestosterone:

1) Green Tea

Green tea contains numerous effective anti-oxidants and a component known as EGCG. These properties don’t just make an excellent DHT blocker for the hair but also a great aid for overall health.

Green tea is also known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties. The effectiveness of these components have been shown as green tea prevents major illnesses like cancer and cardiac diseases.

On DHT and hair, a Harvard Medical School Study have found green tea to significantly decrease the level of Dihydrotestosterone concentration in the blood.

2) Beta Sitosterols

Beta sitosterols contain a special mixture of phytersterols with powerful anti-androgenic properties. These are crucial for blocking existing DHT and stopping their transformation.

3) Pumpkin Seed

Does Caffeine Increase Dht

Our results show that caffeine intake increased the concentrations of T and DHT, organ weight, epithelial cell proliferation and AR tissue expression in the ventral prostatic lobe. All the ventral prostates from the caffeine-treated animals presented various degrees of epithelial and stromal hyperplasia.

Does Dhea Cause Hair Loss

The most common fear related to DHEA use is that it may cause increased hair loss, especially in high-risk males. However, most of these reports are assumptive in nature, and clinical studies do not show that DHEA increases hair loss. There is a reason for these assumptions.

Androgenic alopecia or male pattern alopecia is the most common cause of hair loss in men. It is a genetic disorder in which testosterone metabolite DHT causes increased hair loss in genetically predisposed individuals.

Learn how to remove DHT from scalp here.

Since DHEA is a testosterone precursor and may increase its levels in some, thus theoretically, it may increase DHT levels and cause hair loss. However, male pattern baldness appears to be related to elevated sensitivity of hair follicles to DHT rather than its higher level.

Studies show that in many with early onset of male pattern baldness, serum levels of testosterone and DHEA-S were well within the normal range. Moreover, there is no evidence that DHEA may considerably boost DHT levels in the skin or scalp. There are no reports from well-designed studies that DHEA may cause hair loss. Nonetheless, such an adverse effect cannot be entirely excluded in high-risk individuals.

In a four-month study in older men, who are more likely to be living with low testosterone, and at the same time with male pattern alopecia, 50 mg of DHEA did not cause severe adverse events or hair loss.

Male pattern baldness orandrogenetic alopecia is a common condition that will affect most men at somepoint in their lives. Male pattern baldness is caused by dihydrotestosterone, commonly referred to as DHT.

DHT is created by testosterone combining with 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme involved in steroid metabolism. DHT can cause several different changes to the body, including the scalp. Once DHT is produced it connects to the androgen receptors that are at the base of the hair follicles. If you are sensitive to DHT, this leads to miniaturization of the hair follicles and, eventually, hair thinning and hair loss.

What Is Dht What Does Dht Do To Your Hair

Both males and females have DHT in their bodies.

What is DHT exactly? Its the abbreviated name of dihydrotestosterone. DHT is a sex hormone which both males and females possess. Its made in our body from the well-known hormone testosterone. Testosterone is famously in charge of bringing about the various aspects of puberty in males: physical growth, body hair, deeper voice, and so on. Okay, but what does DHT do to the hair on your head?

Within the hair follicle , there is a continual cycle of growth. Hair sprouts, grows, and falls out and then a new hair will often replace it. We all men and women alike lose anywhere between 50-100 hairs a day. Or in some periods of increased shedding, one can lose up to 300 hairs. Thats still normal, and the hair usually grows back. But there is an issue with DHT and hair, because some peoples follicles are more sensitive to DHT. This sensitivity may inhibit the follicles ability to carry on with their cycle.

Will Wearing A Hat Make Me Go Bald

This article was first published in The Skeptical Inquirer.

While losing the hair on our heads doesnt have any serious medical implications on its own, it can be seriously damaging to our psyches. Studies have shown that both women and men with alopecia, or hair loss, experience increased stress, diminished self-esteem, and other negative psychological effects.

Some of us live in fear of our part widening or our hairlines receding. Others have made peace with their eventual journey to becoming a Patrick Stewart lookalike. Either way, youve likely heard a lot of unsubstantiated claims about behaviors that can cause baldness. As usual, some can be dismissed outright , but some bear further investigation.

Most Hair Loss Is Due to Androgenic Alopecia, or Pattern Hair Loss

Although there are other types of hair loss, the most common type by far is androgenic alopecia. Also called male or female pattern hair loss, I actually prefer the less common name androgenetic alopecia, as it hints at the root cause of such balding: genetics.

This type of hair loss occurs when testosterone is metabolized into dihydrotestosterone , which can interact with androgen receptors in hairs, inducing miniaturization of the hair follicle. Mini hair follicles produce thinner, smaller, shorter hairs that grow slower than normal hairs and are easily pulled out. As for why only some people experience hair loss even though most humans have hair, hair follicles, and testosterone , you can thank genetics.

What Not To Look For

The three signs above are good indicators that you should think about taking action to stop your hair loss.

However, there are also commonly repeated “signs” of baldness that arent as reliable for identifying hair loss. These include:

  • An itchy scalp, which may have one or more causes, such as dandruff, but which generally does not indicate long-term hair loss.

  • Thin-looking hair after you swim or shower, which is more often a result of your hair clumping together and revealing your scalp than real hair loss. To accurately check for hair loss, its always best to compare photos of your hair when its dry and unstyled.

  • A widows peak, which is a dominant genetic trait and may be an indicator of hair loss or susceptibility to hair loss.

  • A few hairs on your pillow or bar of soap, which are completely normal and not a reliable indicator that youre losing an abnormal amount of hair.

  • A depigmented bulb on hair that falls out naturally. This just indicates that the hair was in the telogen phase when it fell out, and doesnt mean that it wont grow back as normal.

  • A bald grandfather on a certain side of your family. Scientists still dont know exactly how male pattern baldness is inherited, and a bald father or grandfather is no guarantee that you will also go bald.
