Worries About Hair Loss As A Side Effect Of Ibd And Medications

Ulcerative Colitis (vlog #8) – Skin care & hair loss remedies when dealing with Ulcerative Colitis

During these shed phases, I worry about discovering a bald spot. I have friends whose inflammatory bowel disease has significantly altered their hair thickness or has left them almost bald.

With that said, hair shedding is a natural process that can ebb and flow. But that doesnt stop my irrational fears from manifesting.

I started biologic treatment for Crohns disease in 2013. As the years have progressed and meds have changed, my hair is noticeably different with each medication Ive tried.

Procedures with anesthesia due to Crohns have also created major hair loss for me and produced grays. Not cool.

It was exactly 3 months prior that I went under anesthesia for a colonoscopy and endoscopy, and sure enough bye-bye hair. I had a feeling this was coming.

Are Hair Growth And Hair Loss Possible Xeljanz Side Effects

No, Xeljanz isnt known to cause hair loss or hair growth. Neither were reported in clinical trials of the drug.

According to a review of some small clinical trials , Xeljanzs active drug might be an effective treatment for hair loss thats caused by alopecia areata . But more studies are needed to confirm this. At this time Xeljanz is not approved to treat hair loss.

If you have questions or concerns about hair loss or growth while taking Xeljanz, talk with your doctor.

Should Treatment For Crohn’s Stop Because Of Hair Loss

I know Im not alone in experiencing a significant hair loss due to their Crohns. And I know, from experience, that there are many who are experiencing the same if not worse, right now.

I also know for a fact that some will blame their Crohns or ulcerative colitis treatment and want to abandon the treatment because of vanity.

Im writing this in hopes that if you too are experiencing the same that you will know that you are not alone. It will grow back.

Ive seen far too many people comment on social media that their hair is falling out or theyve gained weight since starting treatment and want to quit. Please do not stop your treatment because of hair loss or weight gain.

While I do realize that my hair has vastly changed since starting this new treatment, I am the healthiest Crohns-wise that Ive been in 3 decades. Thats huge!

Its because of Crohns that Im on certain treatments. It’s because of Crohn’s that I do not absorb nutrition properly. So, I try not to view the problem as coming only from my meds. It took a while to arrive here, but now I blame Crohns for stealing my hair.

Q: Where did you get the wigs from and what are they made of?

A: Now I can get technical. I have lots of experience!

My first one was blonde, real hair, ordered from the States on eBay. It was quite expensive actually but looked amazing! With it being blonde I found that it needed to be real hair as artificial hair that colour is too shiny and looks fake!

Now, I am much darker. The darker colours can be fake hair as once the shine has gone a bit and you’ve had some usage out of it, there is no telling that it’s fake!

My favourite website and, one I’ve recommended to friends is Celebwigs.com – hair by MisTresses. Very reasonably priced, packaged discreetly and delivered quickly! Also you can style the fake hair just like the real thing with your straighteners etc…just check that it can withstand the heat first!

Q: How many wigs do you have?

A: 2x blonde, 2x auburn, 2x bright red, 1x brown, 3x black = 10. See, I told you I like my wigs!

It’s so easy to swap colours – no sitting at a salon, building colour, deciding you don’t like it…with a wig its instant! Get out of bed in the morning, do my face and taaddaaarrr…perfect hair and far too many selfies to show everyone my new colours!

Q: How do the wigs make you feel?

A: Like me…

“The sympathy eyes, the half smile…I wasn’t dying I had lost my hair!”

Q: Has your hair started to grow back?

Q: How do you feel about your hair loss now?

Q: What would your advice to anyone losing their hair be?

The Main Types Of Drugs

Hair Loss Ulcerative Colitis

The aim of drug treatment for Ulcerative Colitis is to reduce inflammation. The main types of drugs are:

Aminosalicylates reduce inflammation in the lining of the intestine. Examples include mesalazine , olsalazine , sulphasalazine and balsalazide .

Corticosteroids work by blocking the substances that trigger allergic and inflammatory responses in your body. They include prednisolone, prednisone, methylprednisolone, budesonide , hydrocortisone and beclometasone dipropionate .

Immunosuppressants suppress the immune system, and reduce levels of inflammation. The main immunosuppressants used in IBD are azathioprine , mercaptopurine or 6MP , methotrexate, ciclosporin and tacrolimus. They are often used in patients who relapse when they come off steroids.

Biological drugs are the newest group of drugs used to treat IBD. Anti-TNF drugs, such as infliximab , adalimumab and golimumab target a protein in the body called TNF, or tumor necrosis factor, preventing inflammation. Another type of biological drug is vedolizumab , which works by stopping white blood cells from entering the lining of the gut and causing inflammation.

You can find more information about some of the drugs used for Colitis: Adalimumab, Aminosalicylates , Azathioprine and Mercaptopurine, Biologic Drugs, Golimumab, Methotrexate, Infliximab, Steroids, Ustekinumab and Vedolizumab.

About a quarter of people diagnosed with Crohn’s or Colitis are children or adolescents at the time they are diagnosed.

What Is Scalp Inflammation

Scalp inflammation is exactly what it sounds like — inflammation that affects the skin on the top, sides and back of your head.

Theres no specific medical condition called scalp inflammation. However, a variety of conditions can cause your scalp to become inflamed. These include:

  • Seborrheic dermatitis.Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin disease that can cause a red, scale-like rash to develop on your scalp. The affected area may look swollen and greasy, with a white or yellow scale. The rash caused by seborrheic dermatitis is often itchy. When itched, dry skin can flake off from the scalp, resulting in persistent dandruff.

  • Folliculitis. Folliculitis is a type of infection that develops in your hair follicles. It causes small sores to develop on your scalp. These sores often look similar to acne lesions and may develop a crust-like texture that doesnt heal.Although folliculitis usually isnt painful, it may cause itching and discomfort. Although its common on your scalp, folliculitis can also develop in other parts of your body.

  • Scalp ringworm .Scalp ringworm is a fungal infection that can develop in your scalp and hair follicles. Its caused by the same groups of fungi that can infect your feet, torso and other parts of your body. The most common symptom of scalp ringworm is a red, itchy rash that develops across your scalp, as well as areas of hair loss. The rash caused by scalp ringworm often has a scale-like texture.

Clinical Trials & The Reported Side Effects Of Xeljanz

The studys co-author, Dr. Craiglow, said, By eight months there was full regrowth of hair. The patient has reported feeling no side effects, and weve seen no lab test abnormalities, either.

The results from this study are extremely encouraging, however, further, wider-scale clinical trials are required in order to establish whether the use of tofacitinib citrate in combating Alopecia Universalis, as well as potentially other forms of hair loss, is safe. Particularly given the alarming side effects associated with the drug in connection with its treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in adults and various other conditions it has been tested for as a potential remedy, including Crohns disease, dry eyes, plaque psoriasis, renal transplant rejection, ulcerative colitis, and ankylosing spondylitis.

Many clinical trials of Xeljanz have been, and continue to be carried out in relation to the drugs suitability and safety as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. Yales Dr. King has already submitted a proposal for a clinical trial involving a cream form of tofacitinib as a treatment for alopecia areata.

Currently scheduled until November 2019, on-going clinical trials for the drug started in February 2007. In April 2011, four patients died after beginning clinical trials with tofacitinib citrate Pfizer said that only one of the four deaths was related to tofacitinib.

Appetite Loss From Medication Use

Drugs that are used for the treatment of IBD are another factor in decreased appetite. Immunomodulators such as Purinethol and Prograf are associated with appetite loss as a common side effect, as are other IBD medications. Although corticosteroids may increase appetite, they can also cause a decrease in appetite as a side effect.

Ulcerative Colitis, Plant Based Diet, Weight Loss and Many More!

Xeljanz Use In Pregnancy

There isnt enough information available to know if Xeljanz is safe to take during pregnancy. In animal studies, harm was seen in fetuses when pregnant females were given Xeljanz. But animal studies dont always predict what will happen in humans.

Keep in mind that there are known risks to fetuses of pregnant women who have active rheumatoid arthritis or ulcerative colitis .

If youre pregnant or considering becoming pregnant, talk with your doctor about whether Xeljanz is right for you. Your doctor will discuss the benefits and risks of using Xeljanz during pregnancy. Theyll also discuss the benefits and risks of not treating your condition during pregnancy.

If youre taking or have taken Xeljanz during pregnancy, youre encouraged to enroll in the Xeljanz pregnancy registry. A pregnancy registry allows healthcare providers to collect information about the safety of using certain drugs during pregnancy. To enroll in this pregnancy registry, call 877-311-8972 or visit the registry website.

Appetite Changes With Crohns Disease And Ulcerative Colitis

Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis are forms of inflammatory bowel disease that can cause changes in appetite. Crohns disease causes inflammation in the digestive tract and can affect the small intestine and large intestine. Common symptoms include abdominal pain, fatigue, diarrhea, bloating, and a decrease in appetite that leads to weight loss.

UC is characterized by small sores that form in the inner lining of the large intestine, which includes the colon and rectum. People with UC experience symptoms that are similar to Crohns, including abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, appetite loss, and weight loss.

Both types of IBD are chronic conditions that are associated with immune system dysfunction, abnormalities in gut bacteria, and environmental and hereditary factors. Heres what to know about appetite changes in IBD, as well as how to manage or improve appetite. Note that if you have IBD, any changes in appetite including an increased appetite should be reported to your gastroenterologist and health care team.

Hair today, gone tomorrow

Most of us take the process of hair growth for granted. It is such a microscopic and imperceptible occurrence that we tend to go months before deciding we need a haircut.

What we see and brush as hair is actually the hair shaft, which is the keratinized, hardened tissue that grows from this follicle.

The thicker, fully pigmented hair most people consider real hair is found on the scalp, eyebrows, legs, backs, underarms, and genital areas. Everyones hair grows differently, depending on age, weight, metabolism, hormones, ethnicity, medications, and other factors.

All hair goes through three distinct growth phases:

The first is the active growth phase or anagen phase, lasting several years. At any given time, 85% of our body hair is in this first phase where our hair has an abundance of melanin.

Entyvio And Hair Loss

My daughter had a Crohns flare this past year which culminated in surgery in August. During this time she has lost approximately 40 pounds. She came through the surgery fine but had no appetite and found it difficult to eat after the surgery. She is finding out what food she can tolerate now. She has been on Entyvio infusions and her last one was in September. Her hair is falling out by the handful. She is taking several medications, but we are thinking it is the Entyvio. Has anyone with Crohns suffered a severe hair loss? Has anyone had this happen due to Entyvio? Has the hair loss been permanent or does it grow back after a while?

Hi that must be so frustrating to have your daughter experience hair loss along with the Crohn’s symptoms. Here is an article from Medical News Today on entyvio. Note that it says others have reported hair loss with entvio but their has been no evidence of this in the medications studies.

has experience with entyvio and may be able to share their experience.

Back to you have you asked your daughter’s doctor about this?
