Treatment Options For Thinning Hair

How to Treat Your Thinning Hair Holistically and Thicken it Without Surgery – Dr. Anthony Youn

The first step in resolving your problems with thinning hair is identifying the underlying cause.

Whether your hair loss is caused by an underlying medical condition, triggered by stress, or related to poor lifestyle choices, there are things you can do to address it.

Here are some of the best treatment options for thinning hair.

What Are The Types Of Hair Loss

There are three: anagen effluvium, telogen effluvium and FPHL.

  • Anagen effluvium: This is caused by medications that poison a growing hair follicle .
  • Telogen effluvium: This is caused by an increased number of hair follicles reaching the telogen phase, which is the stage where hair falls out.
  • Androgenetic alopecia/female pattern alopecia/female pattern hair loss /baldness: This type is the most common. Hair thins over the top of the head and on the sides.

Begin Cutting Near The Ends

Start at one inch above the ends of your hair to begin thinning. Then, depending on the length of your hair and how much thinning you want, you may want to continue upwards on the hair shaft.

For longer hairstyles, move one inch upwards at a time to remove additional bulk to thin out more areas. Remember to stay clear of your crown area. Even with extremely long hair, try not to go more than halfway up your hair strands.

You should never use thinning shears near the root or halo area of your head. Even though thinning this area may temporarily decrease the volume of your hair, once it begins to grow, it will double in the lift, causing significant hair problems.

The smaller strands will help hold up the longer ones, creating excessive volume, and it will take some time before these cut strands will grow out and settle into the rest of your hair. When you want thinner hair that is more manageable, cutting near the root will have the opposite effect, so stay closer to the ends and away from your crown.

What Shampoo Ingredients Should I Use For Hair Breakage

You may also notice that your hair appears to break off more easily and seems to be thinner and weaker than it was in the past.

Hair breakage may be the result of styling habits over time, such as using heat to style or dry your hair. Using harsh shampoos, overwashing, and not conditioning your hair can also cause it to break and thin. Modifying these habits can help restore your hair to fullness.

Shampoo ingredients that may strengthen hair and give it the look of fullness include:

  • ginseng

Causes And Risk Factors For Thinning Hair

Can You Use a Straightener for Fine Hair?

As your hair continues to thin, you probably want to ask, or even scream, Why is my hair falling out?! Its a very frustrating and often bewildering occurrence when the hair thins. According to Mayo Clinic, the exact cause of abnormal hair loss is not completely clear, but typically its related to one or more of the following:

  • Heredity
  • Physical or emotional shock
  • Excessive hair styling and/or hair treatments

1. Heredity

The No. 1 reason why both men and women experience excessive hair thinning and hair loss is hereditary. For men, its a more well-known phenomenon called male-pattern baldness, but women can also exhibit female-pattern baldness. Both of these predictable, gradual hair loss patterns are linked with a family history of hair loss. For men, it can start as early as puberty. In addition to thinning hair, men may also notice their hair becoming shorter, softer and finer.

2. Hormonal Imbalances

Hormone imbalances and changes can contribute to thinning hair. Some hormone changes are temporary, like with pregnancy or menopause, and hair thinning or loss resulting from these temporary changes should be temporary as well. However, if you have an ongoing imbalance of hormones, you may have a thyroid problem that needs to be corrected.

3. Thyroid Problems and Other Medical Conditions

4. Medications

Many different types of medicines may contribute to hair thinning, including some of the following types of medications:

  • Acne medications
  • Thyroid medications

Minoxidil: No Prescription Needed

Pros: Minoxidil can stop hairs from getting thinner. It also can help some women regrow hair on the top of their head, says Paradi Mirmirani, MD. She’s a dermatologist with the Permanente Medical Group in Vallejo, Calif.. âVery good studies show that itâs effective and gets the hair root or follicle to become larger.â

Minoxidil OTC come in 5% and 2% solutions and are considered safe for most women. The 2% solution is the only hair loss treatment for women approved by the FDA. Depending on which solution you use you put it on your scalp once daily.

Cons: It doesnât work for everybody. âAbout half of the people who use it do well and see new hair growth,â says Mirmirani. âAnother 40% or so hold steady, not growing new hair but not losing more either. And about 10% find that it doesnât help at all.â

Regrowth can take a while. It may be 12 weeks or longer before new hair starts growing, says Sonia Badreshia-Bansal, MD. She’s a clinical instructor in dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco, and a dermatologist who specializes in hair loss. She suggests using Minoxidil for 6 months and seeing what happens.

The most common side effect is scalp irritation. Some women may have unwanted hair growth on their forehead or face. The other downside: You have to keep using it or your hair will start thinning again.

Thinning hair is caused by a combination of factors some of which you cant control and it can create a snowball effect of complications.

Hair loss and hair thinning may not be life-threatening, but unwanted changes to your appearance can affect your self-esteem and confidence.

If youre pulling your hair out over the stress of losing your hair, youve come to the right place. Below, weve delved deep into the subject of hair thinning to discuss common causes and potential treatment options.

What Are Hair Thinning Shears

How to Thin Out Thick hair

Thinning shears are scissors that have one blade with teeth and one blade without. These teeth are little grooves on the blade that will quickly take your hair out in even sections to help alleviate excess weight, soften lines, and blend between sections.

“Dont use thinning shears to build the shape, use them to ‘decorate’ the shape you created,” says LA-based hairstylist Jay Small. These shears are a secondary tool to any haircut and should not be used to achieve your overall shape or structure in the hair. “When using thinning shears, it should only be for the last 10% of the haircut,” Small tells us.

For most women, FPHL begins in midlife, when a woman is in her 40s, 50s, or 60s. It can begin earlier for some women.

FPHL is a progressive condition. This means women tend to continue losing hair. But women do not lose all of their hair, as do some men. Instead, your part often gets wider. Hair near your temples may recede. Without treatment, some women eventually develop widespread thinning.

Treatment can prevent hair loss from worsening and help women regrow their hair. Treatment delivers the best results when started at the first sign of hair loss.

What Are Other Treatment Options For Hair Loss

If medications such as minoxidil, spironolactone, and finasteride do not work for you or if you cannot take them, your dermatologist may suggest other treatment options, such as:

  • At-home laser therapy. This involves the use of laser combs, helmets, and other devices that emit low-level laser light and stimulate hair growth.
  • Platelet-rich plasma therapy. This involves injecting your own blood platelets into your scalp.
  • Supplements. Biotin, folic acid, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants may help your hair grow thicker. However, ask your dermatologist before taking any supplements because some of them may interact with medications you are already taking.
  • Hair transplant. This may be an enticing option for both men and women who do not respond well to other treatment options to restore their hair growth.

Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia

Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia tends to start on the top of the head with breakage and thinning, and often with some tenderness of the scalp, says Dr. Goh. It gradually spreads outward and can cause permanent hair loss. CCCA is especially common among Black women. Some recent studies have found that about 25% of people with this form of hair loss have a genetic mutation in one of the proteins thats responsible for the formation of the hair follicle, says Dr. Lenzy. On top of that, she notes that the same haircare practices that create tension and cause traction alopecia also contribute to CCCA.
