The Shift From Pregnancy To Postpartum
When someone is postpartum, their normal hair shedding cycle resumes. This often makes people feel like they are losing more hair than normal, but sometimes this is just because less hair falls out when you are pregnant.
Normal hair sheds 50-100 hairs per day, regularly, says Luis Pacheco, master hair expert, colorist, and founder of wellness-based beauty and lifestyle brand TO112. It’s called the exogen phase, or resting phase, of the hair follicle. This is when it stops growing and rests between growth cycles and sheds the hair shaft to make way for new growth.
Once hormone levels dip after giving birth, the body lets go of the hair, resulting in shedding. Hair loss that occurs in the postpartum period is known as telogen effluvium, notes Dr. Mariwalla. She explains that this type of hair loss has nothing to do with pregnancy itself, but rather, is caused by the stress of delivering a baby.
This type of hair loss occurs after any kind of stressor including illnesses, general anesthesia, and even a happy occasion like the birth of a child, she adds.
Telogen Effluvium is when a stressful event, like childbirth, forces hair into the “resting state.” This basically means hair will not grow, and a symptom of this condition is hair loss. This is a reversible condition.
Managing Hair Loss After Pregnancy
As stated above, its common to experience hair shedding after pregnancy, but for most women this will just be temporary. You may be concerned that your hair loss is not stabilising and that you are not experiencing the expected regrowth in the months after you have given birth, however this is not necessarily cause for concern. Womens hormones return to normal at different times after pregnancy, and usually its simply a case of waiting.
If your hair loss persists for many months after pregnancy you should visit your doctor, as theres a chance that it could be a sign of another condition. The most obvious explanation for prolonged hair loss in women is female-pattern baldness, which can affect women as young as their 20s or 30s.

The medical term is post-partum telogen effluvium. Current research suggests that a drop in hormones, especially estrogen, after delivery results in hairs being shed.
Why does hair loss occur after pregnancy?
To understand why hair loss occurs after delivery, it’s important to understand how hair grows normally and the changes that occur during pregnancy:
- About 85-90 % of hair are in the active “growing” phase. These growing hairs lengthen in size by 1 cm each month.
- About 10-15 % of hairs on the scalp in the inactive “resting” phase. These hairs are preparing to be shed.
- For most women, this means that there are about 100,000 hairs on the scalp at any time and between 50 to 100 hairs are lost or “shed” every day.
- Due to rising estrogen levels, fewer and fewer hairs get “shed” from the scalp with each passing day. More hairs accumulate in the active growing phase.
