Conventional Hair Loss Treatments
Below are three conventional methods. Rogaine and Propecia are two of the most popular hair loss treatments in the world. They tend to offer quick results, though they wont last if you dont treat the bigger issue.
Remember, hair loss is a symptom of a bigger health problem. Covering up the symptom does not fix the real problem. Its much more effective to fix the real problem behind hair loss instead of just masking the symptoms. Anyway, lets have a look at these three.
What Is Androgenetic Alopecia
Almost every woman eventually develops some degree of female pattern hair loss. It can start any time after the onset of puberty, but women tend to first notice it around menopause, when hair loss typically increases. The risk rises with age, and it’s higher for women with a history of hair loss on either side of the family.
As the name suggests, androgenetic alopecia involves the action of the hormones called androgens, which are essential for normal male sexual development and have other important functions in both sexes, including sex drive and regulation of hair growth. The condition may be inherited and involve several different genes. It can also result from an underlying endocrine condition, such as overproduction of androgen or an androgen-secreting tumor on the ovary, pituitary, or adrenal gland. In either case, the alopecia is likely related to increased androgen activity. But unlike androgenetic alopecia in men, in women the precise role of androgens is harder to determine. On the chance that an androgen-secreting tumor is involved, it’s important to measure androgen levels in women with clear female pattern hair loss.
What Are The Complications Of Baldness And Hair Transplantation Procedures
Baldness may lower cause self-esteem. There are complications associated with hair transplantation procedures that include:
Patchy hair growth. Sometimes, the growth of newly placed hair has a patchy look, especially if it is placed next to a thinning area. This can often be fixed with more surgery.
Bleeding and/or wide scars. Tension on the scalp from some of the scalp reduction techniques can cause wide scars and/or bleeding.
Grafts not taking. Occasionally, there is a chance that the graft may not “take.” If this is the case, surgery must be repeated.
Infection. As with any surgical procedure, there is the risk of infection.

On Whom Does Prp Treatment Work
PRP or platelet-rich plasma treatment for hair loss works best on people who have started experiencing hair fall recently. There are many studies on people with androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness showing promising results. Androgenic alopecia is a genetic condition that is affected by hormones. Two studies were done on people with alopecia areata an auto-immune disorder that causes hair thinning and balding also showed that PRP therapy may be an effective treatment for the same , . However, more research is required to prove the same. Also, remember that PRP treatment does not cure balding.
If a part of your scalp has started thinning out recently, talk to your dermatologist to see if PRP treatment is the best option.
PRP therapy is a budding and effective hair loss treatment. But, is it a permanent solution for hair loss and balding? Find out in the next section.

Hair Cycle Of Growth And Rest
Like your skin and nails, your hair goes through a finely tuned cycle of growth and rest. Hair loss can occur at any time in the cycle. There are 3 phases in a hair cycle:
- In the first stage, your scalp hair is continually growing. This is called the anagen phase. In this phase, your hair grows about 12cm per month. About 90% of your hair is in this stage at any one time. It lasts between 25 years.
- The second stage is call the catagen phase, which is when growth stops. About 13% of your scalp hair is in this phase at any one time. It lasts for 23 weeks.
- The third stage is called the telogen phase. This is a resting phase and it lasts between 14 months. About 10% of your scalp hair is in this phase at any one time.
At the end of its resting stage, a hair goes through a shedding phase, which normally results in the growth of a new hair. When a hair is shed, itâs replaced by a new hair from the same hair follicle, located just beneath your skin surface.
Male or female hereditary hair loss is caused by genetic or hormonal influences. It is also called androgenic alopecia because it is affected by the hormones called androgens. These are present in both men and women, but in different quantities.
Your risk of hereditary hair loss increases if you have relatives who have experienced hair loss. Your genetic blueprint for hair loss will affect things like:
- how old you are when hair loss begins
- how fast you lose hair
- the pattern and extent of your hair loss/ baldness.

Stem Cell Therapy With 3d Printing
Stem cells are unique because they begin as undifferentiated cells with the potential to become any kind of cell in the future. Scientists have learned to use stem cells to regenerate entire organs and are now trying to unlock stem cell capacity for hair restoration.
The life cycle of each human hair begins with dermal papillae, special cells that regulate hair follicle development and growth. The dermal papilla cells create a new hair shaft and move upwards to get closer to the stem cells at the follicles tip. The stem cells receive signals from the dermal papillae to start the next growth phase once the previous hair shaft has been shed.
There are two problems connected to the concept of transplanting stem cells for hair regeneration. One is that the dermal papillae may disappear over time and interrupt the cell-to-cell partnership. Another flaw is that when the stem cells are applied to the scalp as cultures, they tend to spread out and let the follicular culture melt away. These two problems cause the transplanted cells to stop producing hair after a while.
Scientists believe that if they can preserve the cells together and maintain their teardrop shape, both stem cells and dermal papilla cells can continue to send signals to each other and grow into resistant hairs. One study theorizes that with 3D printing, scientists can create a mold to hold the cells in place until they become hairs.
Common Hair Loss Problems: Androgenetic Alopecia
Most of us, when we think of hair loss, think about aging men. Nearly all men eventually get that receding M-shaped hairline and thinning hair on the top of the head, also known as male pattern baldness. Itâs called androgenetic alopecia, and itâs caused by a by-product of testosterone called DHT. Learn more about the latest DHT-blocking treatments.
Aging women have a similar problem. Their hair gets thin, although itâs not clear that this is necessarily caused by sex hormones.
What is clear is that the same thing happens in aging men and women. Hair follicles get smaller. The anagen stage of hair growth gets shorter, and the resting stage gets longer. The result: Thin, very short hairs â and many follicles empty of hair shafts.
Why is this pattern of hair loss only in the front and on top? Thatâs where hormone-sensitive follicles live. The follicles on the sides and back of the head arenât affected by DHT and usually stay healthy.

Exciting Findings In Long
Their follicles also engaged in hair growth roughly three times as often. However, researchers restored their normal hair cycle by feeding the subjects corticosterone. Interestingly, when they applied various mild stressors to the controls for nine weeks, corticosterone rose and hair stopped growing. These stressors included tilting their cage, isolation, crowding, damp bedding, rapid lighting changes, and restraining. Injecting GAS6 into their skin reinitiated hair growth with no side-effects.
These exciting findings establish a foundation for exploring treatments for hair loss caused by chronic stress, adds Prof. Rui Yi, a dermatalogist at Northwestern University who is not involved in the study.
The study also reveals GAS6 increases expression of genes involved in cell division in HFSCs.
So, the authors might have uncovered a previously unknown mechanism that stimulates HFSC activation directly by promoting cell division, Prof Yi continues. In aging skin, most progenitor cells harbor DNA mutations including harmful ones that are often found in skin cancers without forming tumors.
It will be crucial to see whether forced GAS6 expression could inadvertently unleash the growth potential of these quiescent but potentially mutation-containing HFSCs, Yi concludes. Modern life for humans is inevitably stressful. But perhaps, one day, it will prove possible to combat the negative impact of chronic stress on our hair, at least by adding some GAS6.

A single chemical could be responsible for whether people go bald or not, a new study has found.
In the UK, approximately two thirds of men will face male pattern baldness. The study says the discovery of the chemical could not only treat baldness, but ultimately speed wound healing.
Researchers at the University of California, Riverside, found that a sole chemical is responsible for hair follicles dividing and dying.
In the study published in the Biophysical Journal, study co-author Qixuan Wang said: In science fiction when characters heal quickly from injuries, the idea is that stem cells allowed it.
In real life, our new research gets us closer to understanding stem cell behavior, so that we can control it and promote wound healing.

Radical Solutions For Baldness
Geneticist Angela Christianos research not only offers hope to those suffering from hair loss, it could point the way to new cancer therapies. Read more in Columbia Magazine.
The genome study was also crucial since the findings also explained why previous efforts to treat the condition hadnt worked.
Drugs for other autoimmune skin diseases had been tested in alopecia, but they had largely failed, Christiano says.
At that point, we realized that was because alopecia doesnt share genetic pathways with other autoimmune skin diseases.

When Will There Ever Be A Cure For Baldness
Jeff Bezos. John McCain. Patrick Stewart. Despite all their wealth and power, these men and many others suffer from a pandemic, one so insidious and diabolical that it strikes men of every age, position, and class. Thats right baldness, a word that brings a tinge of fear to all people of all nations around the world. Baldness has afflicted mankind since the dawn of time. There are long-lost records of ancient Egyptian spells that were designed to cure baldness, involving a prayer to Ra, the Egyptian sun god, and eating a mix of onions, honey, plaster, and heavy metals . Despite the many thousands of years filled with scientific and technological advances since, we humans are still subject to the cruel fate of our hairlines receding into a smooth emptiness.

Introduction: Hair Loss Is A Common Problem That Many People Face
Many people have lost their hair due to stress, poor nutrition, aging and many other reasons. There are many different hair loss issues that can occur, including alopecia areata, female pattern hair loss, and traction alopecia. There are many treatments available for these issues, but the best option for each person will vary. There are many treatments available that are designed to help you restore your hair. It is important that you choose the best hair loss treatment so that you can get a solution that works for you.
The Most Effective Treatments For Hair Loss In Men
Male pattern baldness is caused by the effects of DHT, with its severity varying based primarily on your genes. As such, there are two theoretical ways to treat this type of hair loss:
Change your DNA so that youre no longer sensitive to DHT.
Reduce the amount of DHT in your body to prevent hair loss.
Although technologies like CRISPR-Cas9 have attracted lots of headlines recently, were still a long, long way away from gene editing technology.
As such, editing your DNA so that your hair follicles are resistant to male pattern baldness isnt yet an option, and likely wont be for quite some time.
Luckily, the second option for treating hair loss — reducing the amount of DHT in your body — is possible, and has been for some time.
Through medications like finasteride , its possible to reduce the amount of DHT in your body by a significant amount, allowing you to slow down, prevent or even reverse hair loss from male pattern baldness.
Its also possible to stimulate hair growth using medications like minoxidil, which increase blood flow to your scalp and move your hair follicles into an active growth state.
Weve provided more information about these treatments and others below, including the latest research on their effectiveness.

As you can see from the diagram below, the hair follicle is supplied by blood which allow the strand of hair to grow.
There must be a good, strong supply of blood because blood contains the nutritive substances that are used in the process of keratinization. This is the process of actually building the follicle from keratin.
With a low blood supply, the hair follicle itself will surely die eventually.
Theres also another reason why blood supply is so important for the health of the hair and preventing hair follicle miniaturization. This can be explained by the Scalp Tension Theory of Hair Loss.

Current Treatments For Male Pattern Baldness
In the UK, there are currently two treatments that are medically approved to tackle the most common type of hair loss male pattern baldness. They are not available on the NHS but are easy to order online from a licensed pharmacy.
Oral Finasteride is a tablet thats taken once per day. It works by blocking the activity of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts the male hormone testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone . DHT is responsible for the miniaturisation of your hair follicles, meaning that they shrink and no longer produce healthy hair. So by blocking the production of DHT in your hair follicles, Finasteride helps the follicles to recover and grow stronger hairs.
Topical Minoxidil comes as a liquid, spray, or foam thats applied directly to the scalp. Minoxidil is a vasodilator, which means that it expands the blood vessels, increasing the blood flow to your existing hair follicles. This helps to revitalise damaged follicles as they receive more oxygen and nutrients from your blood, with minimal side effects.
These two treatments work to reduce or even reverse hair loss in the majority of men. Finasteride has been proven effective for 9 out of 10 men and Minoxidil for 6 out of 10 men. Used together, therefore, they work for over 90% of men.

Not Enough Effective Treatments
Halting male hair loss in its tracks rather than replacing the hair with expensive hair plugs and other invasive surgical techniques is the holy grail of treatment goals. Unfortunately, no one best option exists, experts say.
Over-the-counter minoxidil is the most well known treatment for both men and women, and is available in liquid, foam and shampoo forms. Minoxidil requires an application on the scalp both morning and night, and some complain it can leave hair feeling sticky and hard to style.
Side effects can include a itching or a burning feeling on the scalp, as well as dryness, scaling and flaking. It takes several months for the positive effects to appear, and hair loss returns quickly once use is stopped.
Dutasteride can have brutal side effects in some men, Rossi said, including a loss of libido, erectile dysfunction and a form of low pressure called orthostatic hypotension.
On rare occasions, there can be more severe reactions to dutasteride. Call the doctor or go to the emergency room if there is any skin peeling, swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or any changes to the breasts such as increased size, lumps, pain, or nipple discharge, experts say.
Finasteride can also impact male sexual abilities, but it is less potent than its cousin dutasteride, so it might be a better choice for some men.
