From Sun To Stress: What Really Causes Hair Loss

Theres no doubt about it: were living in a fake news era. Were being constantly bombarded with so much information that it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction but not everything we read should be taken at face value! Over the years, weve heard so many hair loss myths that its enough to make us want to tear ours out so, whats really behind hair loss, and whats fake news?
A change in weather can bring a change to your hair condition and hydration is usually the culprit. Hot summer days are not always your hairs best friend, as sun exposure can damage your hair, making it dry and brittle. The UV radiation damages the proteins that the hair is made from, so if you know youll be spending a lot of time outside, invest in a good protectant spray. Thankfully, if you do get sunburn on your scalp, although you may lose a few hairs if your scalp peels, the chances are it will grow back.
One of the main causes behind hair loss in women is a change in hormones. Post-natal hair loss in particular is very prevalent, often occurring two to four months after giving birth. During pregnancy, your hair stays in a longer phase of growth, leading to fuller-looking hair but when your oestrogen levels drop after childbirth, the hair will start to fall out. Thankfully, in the majority of cases its temporary, and will settle down after six to 12 months.
My Personal Experience With Sunburn
Having shaved my head since 1995, I can confirm that I have paid the price on more than several occasions by neglecting to wear sunblock and/or a hat during exposure to direct sun. As a light-skinned guy who tans moderately well, I know from experience how my skin tans and burns and which areas of my body are most susceptible to sunburn. Namely the:
- top of my head especially the forehead and crown
- back of the neck since with a shaved head there is no protection from the sun
- shoulders, typically when at a pool or beach and dont have a shirt on
- middle of the back where I often forget to put sunblock
The first exposure to sun is crucial for sunblock protection in the sense that if youre on holiday you dont want to ruin your trip by getting burned after day 1 and then have to remain indoors for several days to heal.
But there is another reason and it has to do the myth of building up a base tan. As this quote from an article from the Harvard Medical School states:
Have you heard of the idea of a base tan? It may seem reasonable enough: before you head off to the beach for vacation, getting a tan ahead of time might help you avoid burning, and theres the added benefit of not looking pale when you first arrive.
The problem with this theory is that it isnt accurate and is made worse by the fact that it gives you a false sense of security. As if going in the sun to begin with helps you get a healthy tan as people often say.

Solution: Take A Break
If you frequently dye and style your hair, try taking a break from these habits for a month or so to see if they are the prominent cause of your hair loss. Semi-permanent colour or highlighting and balayage techniques can also be less harsh on your tresses, so seek a hair consultation before your next colour appointment to see what options are out there. Should You Be Worried About Summer Hair Loss
A slight increase in hair loss over summer isnt necessarily a cause for concern. Because dehydration, UV exposure and heat can all play a part in hair loss, its normal for some people to experience greater hair loss.
However, if youre losing significant amounts of hair, the cause may be beyond seasonal.

Hair shaft is a nonliving cell and, thus unlike skin cells, it requires no protection from carcinogenesis commonly caused by ultraviolet radiation on skin. Simply put, you cannot have cancerous hair fibres carcinogenesis in a hair shaft itself is not currently considered possible. If hair proteins in the shaft are altered by sun exposure, damaged hair can be removed and replaced by new hair.
However, UV radiation damages hair lipids, so photodamaged hair is dry and dull, as sunlight damages disulphide bonds the protein links that creates elasticity and essentially holds your hair shaft together. In addition, colour treated hair, already deprived of its natural moisture is more likely to dry and become brittle after exposure to the sun. Hair devoid of natural lipids, is subject to static electricity, fractures easily and appears frizzy.
