Yes Levothyroxine Can Cause Hair Loss

Hair loss can be one of the most frustrating symptoms associated with thyroid problems.

And thyroid-related hair loss is not just associated with low thyroid conditions but also high thyroid conditions as well.

Today, though, we will be focusing on hair loss associated with levothyroxine.

Levothyroxine is the most commonly prescribed thyroid medication out there right now.

In fact, it’s one of the most commonly prescribed medications in the United States.

Levothyroxine is used to treat patients who have LOW thyroid function so people who are taking this medication have hypothyroidism.

Levothyroxine is supposed to normalize thyroid function by providing your body with the very thing it needs if you don’t have enough thyroid hormone.

We know that one of the side effects of having LOW thyroid function is hair loss.

And with that in mind, we have a little bit of a problem:

How can it be the case that the very medication which is supposed to fix a low thyroid causes one of the symptoms associated with that very condition?

In other words, shouldn’t it be the case that treating a low thyroid will help your hair grow?

You would think so but it’s not quite that easy.

Additional Factors That Contribute To Hair Loss

It is definitely the case that many thyroid patients struggle with hair loss but you should also be aware that other factors can contribute.

Often times hair loss is due to a variety of triggers including problems with thyroid function or thyroid medication.

For instance, low thyroid function can lead to nutrient deficiencies such as iron and vitamin b12, both of which are necessary for hair growth.

If you have these nutrient deficiencies then changing up your thyroid medication will help some but it won’t bring your hair back to its previous state.

You won’t see significant improvement until you replace these nutrients while also changing up your thyroid medication.

If you aren’t seeing improvement in your hair growth after changing your thyroid medication then look to these nutrients:

These nutrients are necessary for hair growth and if you don’t have enough of them your hair will not grow even if your thyroid is stimulating your hair follicles.

You can think of these nutrients like the gas in your car and your thyroid like the gas peddle.

You can push down on the gas peddle all you want but if the gas tank is empty then you aren’t going anywhere.

The Link Between Gut Permeability & Hair Loss

After being digested, the micronutrients obtained from food have to pass through the intestinal wall and into the bloodstream or the lymphatic system. The intestinal wall represents a barrier between the billions of bacteria and the rest of the body. But this barrier has to be permeable to allow nutrients to pass.

A change in diet, gut bacteria, or inflammation in the intestine can alter the permeability of the intestinal wall. While there is no direct relation between gut permeability and hair loss, changes in the intestinal wall disrupt the digestive process and impede the absorption of nutrients. And without the proper nutrients, hair growth is slowed down or stops entirely.

Tips To Relieve Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism treatment, fluids, and plenty of fiber can help alleviate this uncomfortable symptom.

Hypothyroidism, or low levels of thyroid hormone, can have many effects on your health, including your bowel movements. Constipation, in fact, is one of the most common symptoms of hypothyroidism, along with dry skin, sensitivity to cold, hair loss, difficulty concentrating, and fatigue, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases .

Constipation is defined by having three or fewer bowel movements a week, or by bowel movements that are painful and unproductive, according to the NIDDK. Relieving constipation starts by treating your hypothyroidism but also involves making a few key lifestyle changes.

Eating More Dietary Fiber

A simple way to help ease constipation issues is to eat more high-fiber foods. Dietary fiber is a mix of complex carbohydrates. It can be found in the leaves and stems of plants and the bran of whole grains. Nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables are also good sources. Meat and dairy products dont contain any fiber.

Start by gradually adding more fiber to your diet. The following foods are high in dietary fiber:

  • whole wheat bread
  • nuts

Make sure youre eating whole fruits instead of drinking fruit juices. Juices dont have fiber.

According to the Mayo Clinic, men should aim for 30 to 38 grams of fiber per day, and women should consume 21 to 25 grams per day. Along with your high-fiber diet, also increase your intake of water and other liquids. Aim for at least 1.5 liters per day.

Is Parkinsons Disease Inherited

Scientists have discovered gene mutations that are associated with Parkinsons disease.

There is some belief that some cases of early-onset Parkinsons disease disease starting before age 50 may be inherited. Scientists identified a gene mutation in people with Parkinsons disease whose brains contain Lewy bodies, which are clumps of the protein alpha-synuclein. Scientists are trying to understand the function of this protein and its relationship to genetic mutations that are sometimes seen in Parkinsons disease and in people with a type of dementia called Lewy body dementia.

Several other gene mutations have been found to play a role in Parkinsons disease. Mutations in these genes cause abnormal cell functioning, which affects the nerve cells ability to release dopamine and causes nerve cell death. Researchers are still trying to discover what causes these genes to mutate in order to understand how gene mutations influence the development of Parkinsons disease.

Scientists think that about 10% to 15% of persons with Parkinsons disease may have a genetic mutation that predisposes them to development of the disease. There are also environmental factors involved that are not fully understood.
