Some Supplements Have Too Much Biotin
Living in a super-size-me world where the general culture feels âmore is betterâ certainly should not apply to biotin. Individuals who are taking biotin for hair loss in lesser doses and not seeing the desired results often assume their dose must not be enough and, in turn, take too much biotin.
As stores sell biotin in doses up to 10,000mcg per serving â which is a very high amount based on the daily value of only 30mcg â many believe that more will be the âmagic bulletâ to combat hair loss and buy a dose with too much biotin. Meanwhile, there is not sufficient evidence to support this notion.

But Wait Is It Possible To Have A Biotin Deficiency
Although its uncommon, it is possible to be deficient in biotin, says Rajani Katta, MD, a dermatologist in Houston and author of Glow: The Dermatologist’s Guide to a Whole Foods Younger Skin Diet. There are some genetic conditions that can cause you to have low biotin levels, like biotindase deficiency disorder, and this can lead to hair loss, red flaky rashes on the skin, and brittle nails. Other factors that might lead to lower levels of biotin are smoking, excessive alcohol intake and pregnancy. People who take certain anti-epileptic medications may also develop a biotin deficiency.
You’re also more likely to develop a biotin deficiency if you have a condition that impacts your digestive tract, like inflammatory bowel disease or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. That’s because biotin is naturally produced by certain gut bacteria in the intestines, so any condition that throws off the microbes in there can impact the effective production of the vitamin, says Dr. Katta.
Still, “our bodies require only a very small amount of biotin, which is easily achieved if youre eating a relatively normal American diet, says Kimbre Zahn, MD, family medicine physician at Indiana University Health.

The Difference Between Biotin And Collagen
Each hair follicle we have is made up of keratin protein cells which are rooted in the skins dermis by a hair bulb. Blood vessels deliver hormones and nourish each follicle to keep them growing healthy and strong. However, if your hair is falling out at the roots, there may be something wrong with your overall health.
Instead of redirecting nourishment to the hair follicles, your body focuses instead on keeping your organs functional. The medical term for severe hair loss in men and women is called alopecia. Doctors check on alopecia patients by looking at their diet, habits, stress levels, and medication to identify the actual cause of the problem.
If your doctor cannot diagnose a problem or you simply want to grow your hair thicker, you may consider taking collagen or biotin supplements to treat hair loss and to keep your skin healthy.

Why Does Hair Shed Anyway
In order to properly treat hair shedding, its crucial to understand all of the culprits that could be driving this changeand there are more possibilities than you might think.
Healthy hair undergoes three stages during the life cycle, including a growing stage , a short preparation stage, and a few months of resting, explains Dr. Erica Walters, an aesthetic medicine practitioner and medical director at Park Avenue Skin Solutions and Tribeca Wellness Collective. When the resting stage is over, hair sheds normally and the cycle repeats itself. Walters notes that one of the most common causes of excess hair shedding is stress, especially in younger womenwhich may explain why youre losing hair before age 30 and years before menopausebut stress may not be the sole factor.
Other common causes include hormone imbalances , extreme dieting, anemia, thyroid dysfunction, and certain vitamin deficiencies, Walters says. Genetics and auto-immune disease can also cause hair loss and thinning. For all ages, I gather a detailed medical history including diet, exercise, life events and stressors, medication or drug use, and even patterns of hair styling and coloring. Basic lab work would include hormone and thyroid testing, vitamin levels, electrolytes, and a complete blood count to rule out any abnormalities.
One solution you likely wont encounter at Walters office? You guessed it: biotin.

How Effective Are Biotin Or Vitamin B7 Supplements For Hair Loss
Written by Upneet Pansare | Published : December 6, 2017 3:29 PM IST
Biotin, also known as Vitamin B7 or Vitamin H is an essential nutrient for a number of beauty and health benefits including stopping hair loss, making the skin and nails healthy, good digestion, prevention and control of diabetes, prevention of heart disease and even helping in increasing metabolism and hence weight loss. Biotin deficiency causes several skin problems including rashes, dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema and acne. When it comes to hair loss, Trichologists and experts often prescribe biotin supplements to stop further damage and to help the growth of healthy hair. Here are vitamins you must have to prevent hair loss. Dr Shefali Trasi Nerurkar tells us more about biotin supplements and how they can help with hair loss.
Dr Trasi says the usual biotin supplement dosage that’s recommended for those with hair loss is 5 to 10 ml for 3-6 months along with other supplements like amino acids and minerals. Those with hypervitaminosis of vitamin B7 should avoid biotin supplements.
Is There A Natural Solution
If any natural ingredient deserves a little more love, its ashwagandha, an Indian medicine herb that comes from a family of plants called adaptogens, which date back thousands of years in use in traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine, according to Rupani Goyal. Adaptogens help the body normalize physiologic responses to stress, such as cortisol release, and in this way can be helpful in managing hair loss, Goyal says.
Perhaps because natural medicinal alternatives are not prescribed by most doctors, its tempting to think you can DIY a hair loss solution by buying a few herbs off of Amazon, rolling up your sleeves, and creating elixirs in your kitchen. But Goyal reminds us that herbs are powerful and many of our prescribed medications actually originated in plants.
Safety is a real concern, Goyal says. As such, not only is it vital to have a complete understanding of human physiology before recommending a supplement, but if someone is attempting to actually create an herbal remedy, having the involvement of a plant scientist or chemist is also important.

Does Biotin Really Work For Hair Growth
Although its easy to find numerous websites touting biotin for hair regrowth , the official word from the National Institutes of HealthOffice of Dietary Supplements is that there is little scientific evidence to support these claims, and more research is needed before biotin can be recommended for any of these conditions.
We used to think that biotin worked for hair growth, but the science is more contradictory now, says Sandra Marchese Johnson, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist at Johnson Dermatology in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Research shows there is no to limited benefit.
Deirdre Hooper, MD, cofounder of Audubon Dermatology in New Orleans adds: Although some very small studies have shown some improvement in hair or nail diseases with biotin supplementation several studies have shown biotin to interfere with many blood tests, including thyroid and cardiac function tests.
Not everyone is so down on biotin, however. A 2019 article from theCleveland Clinic claimed that dermatologists have quietly prescribed biotin as a hair loss treatment for many years, even though the research hasnt proved its health benefits. Why? Because some believe it works and it is not known to be harmful.
How Much Collagen Should I Take Daily For Hair Growth
The amount of collagen you should take should depend on the particular supplement and the reason for taking it. Experts recommend a 2.5-15-gram daily dose of collagen as that appears to be safe and effective.
Before you make a choice and purchase any of these supplements, it is best to consult your doctor for better clarification. You should also purchase supplements from trusted producers and follow the instructions given. Food remains the number 1 source of biotin and collagen.
This should also be your first option to increase their levels in your body.
