Is Rituximab A Chemotherapy
RITUXAN is not chemotherapy. RITUXAN is a type of antibody therapy that can be used alone or with chemotherapy. They work in different ways to find and attack the cells where cancer starts. RITUXAN targets and attaches to the CD20 protein found on the surface of blood cells with cancer and some healthy blood cells.
Arthritis Medications And Hair Loss
Certain medications to treat arthritis can cause hair loss. Learn what to do.
People with autoimmune conditions, such asrheumatoid arthritis and lupus, can experience hair loss as a troubling symptom of their disease. Other times though, the cause of the shedding locks could be the medications used to treat the disease.
Fortunately, hair loss from arthritis medications is not a widespread complication. Still, if your hair is an important part of your identity, its not a small matter to you.
What Medications Cause Hair Loss?
Methotrexate: The most commonly prescribed disease-modifying antirheumatic drug for rheumatoid arthritis, methotrexate is responsible for hair loss in about 1 to 3% of people. The hair loss happens because methotrexate is doing what its supposed to do stop cells from growing. This includes cells causing inflammation and, unfortunately, hair follicles.
Folic acid is commonly prescribed with methotrexate to alleviate some of its side effects. Taking this synthetic form of folate, a B-complex vitamin, can help keep your hair healthy, but it has not been found to promote hair growth.
Leflunomide : Another widely used DMARD for RA with the potential for hair loss is leflunomide. It often is prescribed in combination with methotrexate, and causes hair loss similar to the way methotrexate does in about 10 percent of users.

When to Talk to Your Doctor
Will I Be Able To Use Other Medications On The Same Day I Have A Rituxan Infusion
Yes, you can still take other medications on the same day as your Rituxan infusion. In fact, youll usually be given drugs to help prevent you from having an infusion reaction on the day of your Rituxan dose.
Be sure to keep taking your other medications as directed by your doctor, even if its on a day that youre having an infusion. Always talk with your doctor before you stop or start taking medication.

When Can I Perm Straighten Or Dye My Hair
Ask your medical team how long you should wait after finishing treatment before you colour, chemically straighten or perm your hair. Traces of chemotherapy in your hair strands could react with the chemicals used in the styling processes.
Natural, temporary dyes might be better than permanent chemical products. If youd like to dye your hair, you could ask your clinical nurse specialist if a vegetable-based hair dye that you wash out is suitable for you. These are milder and less damaging to your hair and scalp than chemical ones.
Whichever treatment type youve had, your new hair might be fragile so you should wait for at least six months after your hair has started to grow back before you have woven-in or glued-in hair extensions.
When To Contact Your Team
Your doctor, nurse or pharmacist will go through the possible side effects. They will monitor you closely during treatment and check how you are at your appointments. Contact your advice line as soon as possible if:
- you have severe side effects
- your side effects arent getting any better
- your side effects are getting worse
Early treatment can help manage side effects better.

- Avoid using hair dryers, hot rollers or curling/flat irons too often.

Fertility Pregnancy And Breastfeeding
There is limited research into how rituximab effects an unborn baby. Its generally recommended that rituximab should be stopped six months before pregnancy. However, if you have recently had rituximab and find yourself pregnant it is not thought to be harmful to your baby.
Usually you will not be treated with rituximab during the last six months of your pregnancy. However, some women may have to take rituximab throughout their pregnancy if their condition remains active and poses a risk to them or their baby. There is no evidence to suggest this would harm their unborn child.
It is considered safe to take rituximab while you are breastfeeding. You should talk to your doctor about any concerns you may have.
It is considered safe for men to continue taking rituximab while trying to father a baby.
How Long Does Rituxan Stay In Your System
After taking Rituxan, the medication can stay in your body for months. In one study of people with NHL, Rituxan remained in their blood for 3 to 6 months after their last dose. So the drug may actually keep working for months after your last dose.
However, the length of time a medication stays in the body is different for each person. If you have questions about how long Rituxan will last for you or when you need another dose, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.
The Rituxan dosage your doctor prescribes will depend on several factors. These include:
- the type and severity of the condition youre using Rituxan to treat
- your height and weight
- other medical conditions you may have
Your doctor will ultimately prescribe the smallest dosage that provides the desired effect.
The following information describes dosages that are commonly used or recommended. However, your doctor will determine the best dosage to fit your needs.

Treatment Can Be Administered In Five To Seven Minutes Compared To 15 Hours Or More For Intravenous Rituxan
South San Francisco, CA — June 22, 2017 —
Genentech, a member of the Roche Group , announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved RITUXAN HYCELA for subcutaneous injection for the treatment of adults with the following blood cancers: previously untreated and relapsed or refractory follicular lymphoma, previously untreated diffuse large B-cell lymphoma , and previously untreated and previously treated chronic lymphocytic leukemia . This new treatment includes the same monoclonal antibody as intravenous Rituxan® in combination with hyaluronidase human, an enzyme that helps to deliver rituximab under the skin.
With todays approval of RITUXAN HYCELA, people with three of the most common blood cancers now have a new treatment option which provides efficacy comparable with intravenous Rituxan and can be delivered under the skin in minutes instead of hours through IV infusion, said Sandra Horning, M.D., chief medical officer and head of Global Product Development. People who benefit from Rituxan may receive years of repeated treatments for their blood cancer, so an option that reduces the administration time can be important.
About the RITUXAN HYCELA Clinical Development Program
The approval of RITUXAN HYCELA is based on results from clinical studies that together represented nearly 2,000 people. The studies were the following:

How Saw Palmetto Can Help With Hair Loss
Saw palmetto has been used in folk medicine for a variety of purposes for some time, and in recent years has begun to be studied empirically.

Haven’t seen this chemo mentioned on the site – it’s one being considered for my stage 4, Follicular, B cell cancer that didn’t go into Remission on CVP-R. Just wondering if anyone has used it and was it successful? Fran
How Does Rituxan Work
Rituxan circulates in the lymphatic system and tissue. It binds specifically to the CD20 antigen, a molecule present on the surface of the normal and malignant pre-B and mature B cells. This binding can be imagined as a lock fitting a key. More than 90 percent of B-cell NHL express CD20. Once bound to B-cells, Rituxan induces lysis through several possible mechanisms:
|Apoptosis: The Rituxan antibody induces cells to which it is bound to initiate programmed cell death. The activation of this program by the cell results in the death of the cell .|
|Antibody-dependent Cell-mediated Cytotoxicity – An immune response triggered by the presence of antibody coating the target cell. Upon binding its antigen, the Antibody’s Fc region is exposed and will bind its receptor on the NK cell to form a bridge. Once the bridge is formed, a poorly understood lytic signal is delivered to the target cell by the effector cell, resulting in its demise.|
