Recap + Final Thoughts

I hope you’ve found this case study helpful and informative.

I’ve had some instances where patients take these case studies to their Doctors and ask to be treated in a similar way.

I don’t recommend this approach for several reasons:

1. This patient is NOT you

2. I’m never able to provide all of the specifics of each patient in a case study so there is a lot of information that is left out and makes the story incomplete

3. Many of the therapies referenced here require advanced knowledge of hormone replacement therapy and/or the use of medications off-label

At the end of the day, I want to drive home that there are advanced weight loss therapies out there that can help even the most weight loss resistant patients lose weight.

Don’t feel like your case is hopeless or that you are out of options.

Victoza is one of those newer therapies that can be very effective in a certain subgroup of the population but finding and understanding who benefits from it can be difficult without an understanding of hormone balance.

Now it’s your turn:

Have you used Victoza in the past?

Did it help you lose weight?

Why or why not?

The Hair Growth And Loss Cycle

Causes Of Hair Loss In Women | Explains Dr. Shikha Shah

To understand the type of hair loss related to Wellbutrin, it helps to talk about the phases of the hair cycle. Our hair actually goes through four distinct phases between the “birth” of a hair and when it falls out: anagen, catagen, telogen, and exogen. The first phase, anagen, determines how long hair will become and lasts from two to six years. Nearly 90% of the hairs on your head are in the anagen phase.

Catagen is a shorter transition phase in which the hair follicle loses its blood supply and stops growing. It then enters the telogen phase, where it stays for three or four months. Exogen is the final phase, in which the hair is shed. Around 10% of your hair is normally in the telogen phase, but this can be much higher if your hair is prematurely shifted to the telogen phase by a physical or emotional stressor.

The type of hair loss experienced by some people on Wellbutrin and other antidepressants is telogen effluvium. It is characterized by widespread thinning of the hair. Often, more hair loss occurs near the front of the head, above the forehead.

Newly Approved Obesity Drug Wegovy Holds Promise But Faces Reimbursement Challenges

On Friday, June 4th, the Food and Drug Administration approved Novo Nordisks obesity drug Wegovy , a glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist, to be injected subcutaneously once-weekly. Wegovy is a higher-dose – 2.4 mg – version of the diabetes drug Ozempic .

Wegovy is indicated for adults who are obese or overweight , and who also have certain weight-related medical conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol. The drug is to be used for long-term weight management in conjunction with a reduced calorie meal plan and increased physical activity.

FDA approved Wegovy based on phase 3 data which showed that Wegovy helped 33% of patients lose more than 20% of their body weight over a 68-week clinical trial period. The high-dose version of semaglutide is a first of its kind obesity medication in that it is dosed on a once-weekly basis.

The Wegovy approval continues a trend in which manufacturers of diabetes drugs repurpose them to treat other conditions that are common in diabetic patients. So, for example, the diabetes drugs Jardiance and Victoza now have approvals for reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke and death in cardiovascular patients.

Can I Lose Weight With Victoza

As mentioned above, FDA didnt actually approve Victoza for weight loss, but it doesnt mean this effect is nonexistent. Even though this subject needs to be studied more thoroughly, current evidence is promising. For instance, the March 2017 issue of the journal Obesity Science and Practice published an interesting study which revealed that Victoza could indeed boost weight loss.

Mehta et al. carried out a review whose main purpose was to assess the safety and efficacy as well as clinical applicability of liraglutide for weight management. They looked for literature published in the English language in the PubMed database. The search yielded five randomized, placebo-controlled trials involving the drug and its impact on weight loss.

Findings revealed that liraglutide consistently resulted in four to six-kilogram weight loss when used in combination with well-balanced diet and regular physical activity. Whats more, when scientists compared effects of liraglutide to other weight loss agents they found that Victoza was more effective. They concluded the review explaining that liraglutide helps induce and sustain weight loss in obese patients. Its efficacy is comparable and even greater than with some other weight loss medications, but liraglutide also offers a unique benefit of improved glycemic control.
