Thinning hair can be caused by a variety of factors, including stress or hormonal issues. If your hair is thinning, do not fret. There are a number of things you can do to treat thinning hair, such as changing your hairstyle, using gentle hair products, and eating more protein and omega-3s.

What Is Androgenetic Alopecia

Almost every woman eventually develops some degree of female pattern hair loss. It can start any time after the onset of puberty, but women tend to first notice it around menopause, when hair loss typically increases. The risk rises with age, and it’s higher for women with a history of hair loss on either side of the family.

As the name suggests, androgenetic alopecia involves the action of the hormones called androgens, which are essential for normal male sexual development and have other important functions in both sexes, including sex drive and regulation of hair growth. The condition may be inherited and involve several different genes. It can also result from an underlying endocrine condition, such as overproduction of androgen or an androgen-secreting tumor on the ovary, pituitary, or adrenal gland. In either case, the alopecia is likely related to increased androgen activity. But unlike androgenetic alopecia in men, in women the precise role of androgens is harder to determine. On the chance that an androgen-secreting tumor is involved, it’s important to measure androgen levels in women with clear female pattern hair loss.

Hair Loss Trigger: Pcos

If you have polycystic ovary syndrome , your hormones are always out of whack. Your body makes more male hormones, or androgen, than it should. This can cause extra hair to sprout on your face and body while the hair on your head thins out. PCOS can also lead to ovulation problems, acne, and weight gain. But sometimes thinning hair is the only obvious sign.

It can be a challenge. If thin areas are easy to spot, consider a weave, a hairpiece, a scarf, or a hat. Good-quality wigs are more comfortable than ever — and they rarely have bad hair days. If hair loss affects your job or social life or makes you not want to leave the house, talk with a counselor.

Conventional Treatment For Thinning Hair

Conventional treatments for thinning hair include medications and surgery.

When hair is caused by an underlying disease, conventional medicine likely includes drugs like prednisone to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system. Common side effects of prednisone include confusion, headache, restlessness, nausea, vomiting, thinning skin, acne, sleep problems and weight gain.

There are also two drugs on the market today that are approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat pattern baldness or thinning. The first one is minoxidil, commonly known commercially as Rogaine, and it can be used by both men and women. You may experience hair regrowth or a decreased rate of hair loss, but the growth is not permanent and will stop if you stop using it. Some common side effects may include severe scalp irritation, undesirable growth of facial hair, chest pain, rapid heart rate and more.

Another conventional option in pill form is called finasteride. Again, you need to keep taking it to retain benefits. Additionally, women who are or may be pregnant need to avoid touching crushed or broken tablets. Side effects may include impotence, loss of interest in sex, trouble having an orgasm, abnormal ejaculation, swelling in your hands or feet, feeling faint, headache, runny nose, and skin rash.

Pcos And Other Endocrine Disorders

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition that causes cysts to develop on the ovaries, involving hormonal imbalances, weight gain, missed periods and maybe even hair loss.

PCOS is an endocrine disorder. The endocrine system is responsible for hormone production, which are chemical signals that travel throughout the body to regulate a whole host of functions. Endocrine disorders can therefore cause a variety of health issues that are related to hormones, and PCOS often occurs alongside thyroid problems or disruptions to the immune system.

One study suggests that there is a strong connection between PCOS and female hair loss, most often resulting in thinning at the temples, thinning hair around the crown and diffuse thinning over the entire scalp.

What Causes Female Hair Loss At Temples How Can It Be Avoided

While most people identify hair loss at the temples with men, female hair loss at the temples is more common than one might expect, especially after menopause. In fact, around two-thirds of postmenopausal women suffer from some kind of hair thinning or the occurrence of bald spots, and any hair loss usually begins at the temples. While mens hair loss causes and remedies are often discussed and well-known, many are unaware of what causes female hair loss at the temples. Below, learn more about female hair loss, including the most common causes and how hair loss can be avoided.

Can A Receding Hairline Grow Back

This one really depends on the cause, says Dr. Finney, but it is possible in some cases. The best chance to regrow hair is with early intervention, he says. The longer someone waits, the less of a likelihood they have to regrow their hair, so we then shift the focus to maintenance. Dr. Garshick has a similar point of view. Often when we initiate treatment for a receding hairline, our goal is to prevent worsening, but if we are able to see hair grow back, then of course thats even better, she explains.

Additionally, Hill says it really depends on if the follicle is dormant or not. If theres a dormant follicle with blood flow, theres a strong possibility that the hairline will improve and more hairs will come back, she adds. But if the follicle is no longer thriving and is dying off, there is no way to revive the follicle. And I know Im sounding like a broken record here, but getting a scalp analysis from a certified professional is the best way to figure out whats possible for your hairline.

What Is Temple Balding

20 Hairstyles for Men With Thin Hair (Add More Volume)

Temple balding is a gradual loss of hair in the temporofrontal region of the scalp. It progresses over the years and may increase in severity, depending upon the cause. It starts as thinning across the scalp, and then the temple region begins to bald.

Although temple balding is a common woe in many adult men with male pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia, women and young adults are susceptible to it as well. It’s essential to identify this condition as soon as possible and start treatment accordingly.

Hair Loss Trigger: Crash Diets

You may lose more than weight with a fad diet. And if you drop 15 pounds or more, you might also shed some hair a few months down the road. Donât worry too much — itâll return when youâre back on a healthy diet. Be prepared to shed some locks if youâre getting too much vitamin A or not enough protein.

Its Not All About Diet

Although your diet is important, look at other aspects of your life that might be causing inflammation, excess androgens, and PCOS hair loss. The most common ones that I see are:

  • High stress hormones.
  • Too much medium-high intensity exercise.
  • Poor gut health.
  • Environmental toxins

I can only imagine how heartbreaking PCOS hair loss is and why you would want to try everything to get it back. However, I hope you can now see whats causing it to fall out and how theres no scientific way that a shampoo can address excess androgens or inflammation. Im afraid that you may be washing your money down the plughole with these.

How Thinning Hair Occurs In Women Vs Men

How to Camouflage Thinning Temples – Fast & Easy

A healthy scalp has around 80 percent of its hair follicles in the growing stage while the other 20 percent is in the resting stage. Hair thinning and loss occur when that vital growing state either slows down considerably or stops.

What causes hair to thin out for women? Just like our bodies change with age, most women notice some hair thinning as they get older. This is quite natural. Its said that by the age of 50, half of women will complain of hair loss. If a womans thinning hair is related to female-patterned hair loss, then the thinning is believed to be 90 percent genetic and 10 percent hormonal. Youll probably be surprised to learn that female-pattern baldness affects about 30 million American women. You cant change your genetics, but thankfully, you can work on the hormonal aspect .

Thinning hair in women typically occurs slowly all over the entire scalp without a recession of the hair line . If a woman has female-pattern hair loss, it can lead to extreme hair thinning but rarely leads to baldness.

What about thinning hair in men? For men, hair thinning can start as early as puberty and progress for many years to come after that. The thinning usually begins above the temples and travels around the perimeter and top of the head. Ultimately, this can result in a ring of hair often referred to as a horseshoe remaining along the bottom of the scalp. For a lot of men, hair thinning continues until there is no hair left resulting in a completely bald scalp.

Is It Pcos Hair Loss Or Is It Your Thyroid

Your thyroid is a gland that sits at the base of your neck and it controls how fast and slow your metabolism is. If your thyroid isnt producing enough hormone, then you have an underactive thyroid, also known as Hypothyroidism. Up to a quarter of women with PCOS have hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism causes increased androgens which, as I discussed above, causes your hair to fall out.

Ive written an entire article about PCOS and Hypothyroidism, which Id recommend reading if youve experienced any of the following symptoms:

  • Weight gain, even with a low calorie diet.
  • Feeling tired all the time, even after a good sleep.
  • Depression or lack of motivation.
  • Dry skin and hair.
  • Cold hands and feet .
  • Morning headaches.
  • Mental sluggishness.

You dont have to have all of these symptoms, in fact your hair loss might be the only one. As an example, apart from weight gain, my only symptom was that I was constantly cold. As I explained in my article about the thyroid and PCOS, thyroid blood tests are rarely done. Even if they are, they may not be accurate. Your thyroid hormone levels may appear normal even when theyre not.
