Take Care When Applying Heat To Fine Hair

How To Give Volume To Fine Hair

Its true that heat swells hair, but too much will make it static and flyaway, as well as causing untold damage.

  • Protect your hair with a lightweight blow-dry lotion before exposing it to heat.
  • Hold your blow dryer at least eight inches from your hair.
  • Make sure devices are never set on more than medium, whether its your blow dryer, flat iron or curling iron.

Blow Drying Fine Hair: Dry Directly Into The Root

This next technique I learned from celebrity hairstylist Neeko Abriol, who has done hair for Laverne Cox, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Nathalie Emmanuel, and it changed my life. When blow drying your hair, start with the root and blow the air directly toward the scalp. Blow dry the hair against the direction it will lay. This will cause the root to stand up straight rather than fall directly against the scalp, giving the appearance of much more volume. To reach the roots at the nape of my neck, sometimes I’ll bend over and blow dry my hair upside down. I continue this root-drying process until all of my root/scalp area is dry.

My blow dryer is a very old, very busted Babyliss that has somehow survived six years and two cross-country moves. If youre like me and in the market for a new blow dryer, Abramite recommends Trademark Beautys Speedy Blo Hair Dryer . I love how lightweight and powerful this blow dryer is, she says. It has three different nozzles offering versatility to concentrate airflow and create volume, and a diffuser attachment for curls. Not to mention, its not overly expensive, will last you forever, and will smooth out your hair as you dry, which means less manual labor.

Treatments To Improve Hair Volume

Hair volume can generally be improved with proper hair care and some home remedies. However, you may require medical treatment if self-care measures do not work or you have a medical condition that is causing the hair fall and thinning.

Consult your doctor on the following treatments to help improve your hair volume:

  • Minoxidil. This is the only FDA-approved drug that is useful in boosting hair growth. It is available as a topical solution that is applied to the scalp.
  • Nanoxidil. This newly developed drug is derived from minoxidil. The long-term effects of nanoxidil are still being studied, and it is thus advised to consult your doctor before using this cosmeceutical.
  • Finasteride and dutasteride. These medications are commonly used for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia in men.
  • Platelet-rich plasma therapy. The patient√Ęs blood plasma is injected into the scalp to boost hair health.
  • Mesotherapy. Essential nutrients are injected into the scalp mesoderm, enabling higher nutrient absorption by the hair follicle, thus boosting hair growth.
  • Laser treatment. Mild, low-level lasers are used to stimulate the hair follicles.
  • Hair transplant. A patch of skin with hair and hair follicles is cut from another part of the body and implanted in the head.

Style Your Layers For Lasting Lift

Learn how to make the most of your layers no matter what your hair length is with this hack thats perfect for building body and volume.

For hair that sits above the shoulders, styling choppy layers with a curling wand is a great way to play with texture, suggests Diaz. Take layers at various lengths and curl some of the ends inwards and others outwards. This will add the illusion of fuller hair around the face.

If youre rocking longer locks, use Velcro rollers to lift your layers by starting at the mid-lengths of the hair and curling upwards. Secure the curl by going over it with a hairdryer and let it cool completely before removing it.

Add Lift To Your Roots

Sometimes you can add volume to your hair by focusing on the roots. Adding some boost to this area can make it look like your hair is thicker than it is.

To avoid damage caused by heat, gently blow-dry your hair post-shower. When your hair is merely damp, add a volumizing or keratin-based product directly to the roots. This stops your mane from sticking to your scalp, which may be just the boost your hair needs. Try our Keratin-infused Root Boost & Volumizer!

Wash With Baking Soda

HOW TO STYLE THIN HAIR FOR MORE VOLUME

Im now on team no poo, and wash my hair once a week using 1 part baking soda to 3 parts water. Because my hair is long, I let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing. My perpetually flat hair finally has bounce no products required. Best of all, one week later it still feels as squeaky clean as when I first washed it!

Tip #: Set & Forget It

Setting your hair in rollers is one of the absolute best ways to add lasting volume to your hair and its pretty easy to do at home.

You can use this technique to add tight curls and waves or you can just use it to give your hair bounce and body without the curl.

There are a few different ways you can achieve this look

Get Over Your Fear Of Mousse

Unlike the mousse our mothers used that dried out hair and froze it in all its permed glory, mousse formulas today are more elegant and hydrating. Apply a volumizing whip or mousse when hair is wet, Colette recommends. Comb a small, palm-sized dollop of product through hair from root to ends. Be careful not to apply too much as this will only weigh your hair down. We recommend the Oribe Grandiose Hair Plumping mousse, $39, which is great for a blowout.

Consume A Proper Diet

A healthy, well-balanced diet is essential to maintaining good hair health. It is vital to include the following micronutrients in your diet to improve hair growth:

  • Vitamin D, which can be consumed through salmon, eggs, and red meat
  • Iron and zinc, which are abundant in spinach, chard, kale, lettuce, collard, and beans
  • Biotin, found in salmon, eggs, lentil, and peanuts
  • Folic acid, found in leafy greens, broccoli, and fortified breakfast cereals
  • Polyphenols, through citrus fruits, berries, and bell peppers
  • Flavonoids, found in green tea and dark chocolate

You must also consume the following macronutrients:

  • Protein, found in meat, soybean, lentils, and seafood
  • Omega-3 fatty acids, found in chia seeds, nuts, flaxseeds, and freshwater fishes

You can also consume these nutrients in the form of supplements upon consulting your doctor.

Long Layered Haircuts For Volume

11+ of the Best Tips for Giving Your Thin Hair Volume

If you have long hair, long layers and face-framing layers may seem counter-intuitive for making your haircut look more voluminous, as some may think that incorporating layers removes more hair. In this case, it works: Having very long hair without any layers takes the movement out of thin hair, meaning any bit of bend or body that your hair may have isnt fully taken advantage of. Layers help create more shape, movement, and dimension, giving the illusion of fuller locks.

Try Massaging Your Scalp

Healthy circulation can nourish the hair follicles in the scalp where hair growth begins, and massage is an easy, excellent way to rev up circulation. Treat yourself to regular scalp massages to stimulate blood flow into those follicles and plump up your fine, thin hair. Simply work a few drops of a lightweight hair treatment oil into your fingertips and rub all over your scalp in a circular motion for a few minutes before you shampoo.

Get Clean Without Getting In The Shower

Our Perfect hair DayAdvanced Clean Dry Shampoo can actually clean your hair, ridding it of impurities weighing it down. With a few spritzes, you can get that just-washed look and feel without ruining your blowout. The formula balances sebum levels so you can go even longer between washes. Here Is A Breakdown Of My Routine:

  • Shampoo with EVOLVh InstaVolume. I leave it in for a few minutes while I soap up. Rinse it out completely.
  • Spray the EVOLVh InstaVolume elixir liberally all over my hair. I try not to get much near the roots and focus more on the ends. I flip my hair and spray the underside as well. I let it sit a bit then squish in a little bit of water. Then I finger detangle with my head upside down.
  • Rake in a pea sized amount of the TreLuxe ReFlex serum. Shake and scrunch a little.
  • Rake in a nickel sized amount of EVOLVh Total Control Styling Creme. Shake and scrunch all over, flipping my head to the sides to ensure the curls fall naturally and avoid wonky sections. Scrunch in a pea sized amount of the styling creme to set the ends.
  • Microplop with my hair towel.
  • Wait a few minutes then pixie diffuse.
  • You can watch my full styling routine below.

And for the next day, I love using EVOLVH’s UltraFlex hair spray along with some dry shampoo to add back in some volume. I use it if I’ll be spending some time outside to help hold my style and whenever I decide to refresh my hair a bit.

I’d love to hear if this routine works for anyone else. I know some of you who follow me on Instagram have seen my amazing results a few times, went ahead and ordered the InstaVolume line and have loved it as well.

Use A Crimper To Create Volume At The Root

After youve applied a heat-protectant spray, go in with a crimping iron. Pull the top layer of your hair up so its out of your way, and crimp the roots underneath. You only need to crimp the hair closest to your head, because you just want that bit of lift for volume. Use a crimping iron over a curling iron because the wave pattern of the crimper will make your hair act almost like a shelf for the layer on top of it. Once you let the top layer fall down over that hair, itll rest on top of it with a bit of a boost instead of lying flat against your head.
