Children 10 Years Of Age And Younger

SUNSCREEN CAUSES HAIR LOSS ACCORDING TO RESEARCH | Dermatologist @Dr Dray

Alopecia areata often begins during childhood. If your child has difficulty coping with the hair loss, treatment can often help regrow hair.

Treatment options for children 10 years of age and younger are:

  • Corticosteroid you apply to the bald spots: Prescription-strength corticosteroids can help regrow hair. You apply this medication once or twice a day. For children, this alone can be an effective treatment.

  • Minoxidil: Also known by the brand name Rogaine®, minoxidil can help maintain the regrowth after you stop applying the corticosteroid. It has few side effects, so its considered a good option for children.

For children older than 10 years of age, treatment options are based on the amount of hair loss.

Should I Have Any Hormone Tests Done

Blood tests include female and male sex hormone levels as well as thyroid function, as part of the diagnostic workup.

The majority of women affected by FPHL do not have underlying hormonal abnormalities. However, a few women with FPHL are found to have excessive levels of androgens. These women also tend to suffer from acne, irregular menses and excessive facial and body hair. These symptoms are characteristic of the polycystic ovarian syndrome although the majority of women with PCOS do not experience hair loss. Less often, congenital adrenal hyperplasia may be responsible.

The Life Cycle Of A Hair

Throughout its growth, the hair goes through some steps from start to the finish. There are three main stages that are marked by some distinct characteristics and developments. We shed more light to these stages here below:

Stage I: Anagen Phase

Also known as the growth phase, this is the first stage of hair loss. At this stage, the hair grows physically from scratch to approximately 1 cm per month. The phase can stretch out to 3-5 years after which it begins to decline. It is largely determined by genetics and varies significantly from one person to another.

Stage II: Catagen Phase

Next comes the catagen phase. It is also referred to as the transitional phase as it marks the boundary between the starting phase to the mature phase. At this stage, the hair follicles renew themselves. The phase lasts around a fortnight and ends when the hair follicles shrink considerably.

Stage III: Telogen Phase

The Telogen phase marks the last of the three major stages of hair growth. This is also called the shedding phase as it is extensively marked by the shedding off of the hair. Also, the hair follicle remains dormant for 1-4 months. Overall, it accounts for 10-15% of the entire growth duration.

Front Hair Loss Female

Medically reviewed by Kristin Hall, FNP

Noticed your hair falling out? Whether youve spotted more hairs than normal on your pillow, in the shower drain catch or on your clothing, its easy to panic when you notice your hair thinning at a faster pace than normal.

Female pattern hair loss is the most common type of hair loss women experience.

Hair loss in women can occur for a variety of hair types and reasons. Sometimes, its triggered by changes in your hormone levels and a genetic sensitivity to certain hormones. In other cases, factors such as stress, thyroid issues , weight loss and even environmental factors can all have an effect on your hairline.

As a woman, dealing with hair loss can be difficult. Luckily, its almost always treatable using a range of safe, effective medications. Weve covered these treatment options, as well as the key reasons for female hair loss, below.

Treatment Of Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia

There is no standard treatment for FFA. The use of strong steroids, either applied topically or injected into the scalp, has had some success. Others, meanwhile, have turned to the oral medications finasteride or dutasteride, the latter of which is not approved for treating male pattern baldness in the United States. They both work to reduce levels of dihydrotestosterone , the hormone thats responsible for hair follicle miniaturization.

Certain antibiotics like doxycycline and minocycline can be also used. While FFA itself is not caused by an infection, these drugs can be beneficial in reducing the associated inflammation.

Hydroxychloroquine, prescribed for everything from lupus to rheumatoid arthritis, has also shown promise. Several treatments are usually required to increase the beneficial effects.

While treatments like these have been able to halt or slow the progression of hair loss, there is no therapy yet that can reverse the condition. As such, early intervention is still considered the best way to reduce the disheartening impact of FFA.

What Causes Frontal Hair Loss Fibrosing Alopecia

Doctors are a bit baffled as to what exactly is causing frontal hair loss but experts say that the underlying cause most likely is due to imbalanced hormone levels. Although more testing should be done as to why men get frontal hair loss fibrosing alopecia as well.

Other theories as to what the causes are include too much inflammation on the scalp or immune system disorder issues.

Studies in 2016 via the British Journal show that frontal hair loss fibrosing alopecia patients had a common use of sunscreen more than the other group tested in the study. Other skin care beauty products with sunscreen in them could also be the common blame in the study not just plain sunscreen. Although other experts would disagree in blaming sunscreen altogether.

There simply isn’t enough research done to pin point the absolute cause of frontal hair loss.

Other theories of causes included:

Who Is At Risk For Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia

Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia most commonly affects peri- or post-menopausal women in their 50-60s. We think that women who have undergone hysterectomies or experienced early menopause may be more susceptible to FFA, but the exact causes have not yet been proven.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia can also appear in men, typically in their 40s, but as early as their mid-20s. With men, this disease is much less common for several reasons.

First, we may not recognize it because hair loss is a more common occurrence. Also, men are less susceptible to these assumed hormonal triggers. There may be an increased likelihood of FFA in men who have undergone hormonal treatment for prostate cancer and other disorders or who experience other hormone imbalances, but that is still being studied.

Environmental triggers such as minerals and microparticles applied as part of makeup, hair products, and sunscreens have been proposed. However, additional studies are still needed to better outline potential environmental or cosmetic associations of FFA. The lack of causal data shouldnt keep dermatologists from currently recommending physical blocking sunscreens.

What Is The Cause Of Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia

How to treat hair thinning in front part of the scalp? – Dr. Nischal K

Genetic, hormonal, autoimmune, inflammatory, and environmental factors have postulated roles in the pathogenesis of frontal fibrosing alopecia. Pairs of monozygotic twins with frontal fibrosing alopecia and positive family histories reported in some cases suggest a genetic tendency. An androgen-dependentaetiology has been suggested by the predominance of post-menopausal patients. Contact allergy or allergy to cosmetics, moisturising creams, hair dye, and sunscreen have been suggested as possible but unconfirmed causative factors.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia has been considered a variant of lichen planopilaris due to the resemblance on histology and an association with various forms of lichen planus, but there are also many differences that raise doubts.

Medication For Hair Loss

Minoxidil, or Rogaine, is a topical medication that is used to treat female pattern hair loss and male-pattern baldness. It was initially developed as a blood pressure medication and was used off-label to treat hair loss until it became FDA-approved for that purpose. Minoxidil can slow the progression of hair loss. Most women who use the medication experience regrowth of hair. The medication needs to be used continuously to maintain results. Other types of treatment work for different kinds of hair loss. Corticosteroids help suppress the immune response that damages hair follicles in people who have alopecia areata. Once the follicles recover, hair can grow back. If nutritional deficiencies underlie hair loss, eating a healthy diet with adequate and protein and nutrients can help you regrow hair. Certain medical problems may trigger hair loss. Adequately treating these conditions may help restore hair growth.

What Causes Hair Loss In Women

Scarring Cicatricial Alopecia

According to experts, the average human scalp has about 100,000 hair follicles. At any given time, each of your hair follicles is in a different phase of this cycle: Anagen phase , Catagen phase, Telogen phase , and Exogen phase . Thus, seeing some hairs in your brush or in a bath is perfectly normal and doesnt mean you are experiencing a hair loss.

However, if you find more lost hairs than usual, spot thinning edges, or your scalp becomes more noticeable, it is worth analyzing the possible causes and taking action to stop and reverse hair shedding.

What Can We Do To Fight Female Pattern Hair Loss

Minoxidil, a topical therapy, was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for use in female pattern hair loss in 1991, but there is mixed evidence regarding whether this treatment can improve hair loss. In cases where Minoxidil appears beneficial, improvements are not observed for at least the first three months of treatment. Additionally, this treatment can lead to contact dermatitis, and patients often experience increased hair loss using this intervention.

Inhibiting the hormone dihydrotestosterone, known as DHT, has been shown to be beneficial in both male pattern hair loss and female pattern hair loss. DHT is naturally produced within the body when testosterone is converted into it. A drug called finasteride, which inhibits this conversion, is approved by the FDA for use in men. Indeed, it is highly effective in men with male pattern hair loss.

Finasteride is significantly teratogenic, meaning that it put fetuses at risk if the mother is taking the drug. The drug is also associated with unwanted side effects including depression, nausea, hot flashes, and headaches.

The Thyroid Disease Connection

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that rests in the front base of the neck. It secretes thyroid hormones that are used by every cell in the body. There’s a connection between hair loss in women and thyroid disease. Imbalances in thyroid hormone levels are a common reason for hair loss in women. Too much thyroid hormone and too little thyroid hormone may both trigger hair loss. Other symptoms of hyperthyroidism include weight loss, rapid heart rate, inability to fall asleep or stay asleep, and anxiety. In addition to hair loss, hypothyroidism may be associated with weight gain, fatigue, feeling cold, slow heart rate, and constipation. Luckily, thyroid hormone imbalances are easily detectable with blood tests. Treatment helps alleviate symptoms, including hair loss.
