I didnt notice my hair loss until 11 months after surgery. My hair was extremely thick. If it went passed my upper back, I would get a headache from the weight. I realized that I could see my scalp about 1 inch in from my hairline above eyes. Then the belt broke on my vacuum and I had to use a knife to cut out all the hair wrapped up in it. Im a redhead plus I live aloneit was all my hair. The amount of hair in my shower drain and bahroom floor is unbelievable. Did I mention I also have Hypothyroidism. When I brought up my hairloss to my doctor and how dry it was, I was told they are a side effect of the disease and also medicine. That didnt make sense to me since I was diagnosed over 4 years ago but did not have these issues until a year ago. So I went home and tried to accept her response.

Drugs cause hair loss by interfering with the normal cycle of scalp hair growth. During the anagen phase, which lasts for two to seven years, the hair grows. During the telogen phase, which lasts about three months, the hair rests. At the end of the telogen phase, the hair falls out and is replaced by new hair.

Anagen effluvium is hair loss that occurs during the anagen phase of the hair cycle, when the hairs are actively growing. It prevents the matrix cells, which produce new hairs, from dividing normally. This type of hair loss usually occurs within a few days to weeks after taking the medication. It’s most common in people who are taking chemotherapy drugs for cancer and is often severe, causing people to lose most or all of the hair on their head, as well as their eyebrows, eyelashes, and other body hairs.

… now it is thin, straight and lifeless. I am considering getting off Abilify. My doctor wants me to try Latuda but I am scared. My moods are good now. I was on lithium for 20 years but it started to affect my kidneys so I had to get off. I realize that it is just ‘hair’ but it is very distressing. Will I lose it all?

Dalty01 I have gone all through the side effects of both Latuda and Abilify and cannot find anything about hair loss, Now that does not always mean it can’t be check again with your pharmacist or doctor. Have a great day.

I am experiencing the same thing. My hair is really falling out and is just lifeless. I recently switched from Lithium to Abilify because of hair loss on Lithium. But now with Abiliy it’s worse!!While not a stated side effect that you can find anywhere for Abilify, I definitely think it is in my case.I had a very, very full head of hair before and never have had a problem with prescribed drugs in the past. And I’ve been using Bosley products which may help some but there is still a good deal of loss and no growth.
