NEW YORK – A new study of more than 5,000 men calls into question the idea that baldness can signal a greater risk of heart disease.

Dr. Eyal Shahar of the University of Arizona in Tucson and colleagues found little difference in the heart attack risk between men with full heads of hair and their balding peers. Hair loss also wasnt related to thickening of the lining of the carotid arteries, the main vessels that supply blood to the brain. An increase in the lining of these arteries, known as carotid intimal-medial thickness, is a warning sign of atherosclerosis.

Some have suggested that baldness in men is related to increased levels of the hormone androgen, and that this hormone may also play a role in the development of coronary atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries within the heart, Shahar and his team note in their report, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

One previous study found that vertex baldness, or loss of hair at the top of the head, was strongly linked to heart attack risk in fact, the balder men were on top, the greater was their risk.

To further investigate the issue, the researchers looked at 5,056 men 52 to 75 years old, 767 of whom had suffered a heart attack previously. About one third had little or no hair loss, while 13 percent had frontal baldness only, and 54 percent had vertex baldness.

Question: Can Hair Loss Be A Sign Of Something Serious

Thats just hair going through its cycles, and there will be a new one to replace it. But hair loss may be a sign of a more serious medical condition that needs an evaluation by a dermatologist and possible treatment. Here are nine causes of hair loss and how to deal with them.

When To Seek Treatment

Because omicron symptoms can be mistaken for the common cold or flu, doctors urge anyone experiencing them to isolate until symptoms subside.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provided a list of emergency warning signs that need immediate emergency medical care:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
  • New confusion
  • Inability to wake or stay awake
  • Pale, gray, or blue-colored skin, lips, or nail beds, depending on skin tone

Anyone suffering from these symptoms is urged to call 911 or your local emergency facility.

Notify the operator that you are seeking care for someone who has or may have Covid, the CDC advised.

Could Early Balding Signal Heart Trouble In Men

Preliminary research hints — but cannot prove — that men who lose their hair relatively early in life might be at heightened heart risk.

The study involved about 2,000 Indian men under 40 years of age. The researchers said that men who went prematurely gray and experienced male-pattern baldness at a young age had greatly increased odds for heart disease.

After adjusting for age and other cardiovascular risk factors, the investigators concluded that male-pattern baldness was associated with a 5.6 times greater risk of developing heart disease, while premature graying was tied to a 5.3 times higher risk.

“Baldness and premature graying should be considered risk factors for coronary artery disease,” principal investigator Dr. Kamal Sharma said. He’s associate professor of cardiology at the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Center in Ahmedabad, India.

“These factors may indicate biological — rather than chronological — age, which may be important in determining total cardiovascular risk,” he explained in a news release from the European Society of Cardiology .

But cardiologists in the United States believe much more study is needed. They suggested that it’s premature for America’s prematurely balding and graying men to worry that their pates reflect their heart risk.

“It should be reinforced to our balding and premature graying friends that there is no concern when it comes to risk-related heart disease,” Bhusri said.

Heart And Blood Vessel Disorders

Hair Loss Can Sometimes Be a Sign of These 3 Serious ...

Blood clots sometimes form inside one of the upper chambers of hamsters’ hearts. This condition is called atrial thrombosis. The blockages are often found in the left side of the heart. Atrial thrombosis occurs in up to 70% of older Syrian hamsters.

Atrial thrombosis is usually the result of congestive heart failure, a condition in which the heart muscle weakens and cannot pump blood efficiently throughout the body . Both atrial thrombosis and congestive heart failure happen more frequently in older hamsters and are often connected with amyloidosis . Signs include rapid breathing, an irregular heartbeat, and a blue tint to the skin or gums. There is no effective treatment, but your veterinarian may be able to suggest ways of managing this condition for a time. Syrian hamsters with untreated congestive heart failure typically die within a week after signs begin.

Hair Shedding Could Be A Sign Of Anemia

If you’re suddenly noticing a lot more hair in your hairbrush or on your shower floor, this could be a sign that your body has low iron stores, or anemia, and may warrant testing. “This is another blood test we do when you complain of hair changes,” says Mirmirani. She says she is particularly likely to order this blood test for people who are vegetarian or for women who have heavy periods, both of which increase the chance that hair changes are due to low iron.

Its not completely known why low iron can cause hair loss, but iron is critical for many biological and chemical reactions, perhaps including hair growth, says Rebecca Baxt, MD, a dermatologist in Paramus, New Jersey. If your doctor determines that you are truly iron deficient, eating more foods that are high in iron, or taking an iron supplement, might help with hair loss, she adds.

Hair shedding can also happen with sudden changes in estrogen levels and is often noticed after pregnancy or stopping birth control pills.

Can Hair Loss Be A Sign Of Heart Problems

Losing your hair could be the first visible sign of heart disease but only if it is from the top of your head. A review of studies involving almost 40,000 men has found that those with male pattern baldness losing hair from the crown of their head had up to a 70 cent increased risk of heart disease.

Reasons For Sudden Hair Loss And How You Can Get Help

Everyone experiences hair shedding, and it happens to each of us every day. Most people lose 50 to 100 hairs per day as part of this natural cycle, more on days you wash your hair. But what if you check your pillow, shower drain, or comb and it looks like youâre suddenly losing much more than that?

The best thing you can do is talk to your doctor or dermatologist. Theyâll get to the bottom of why youâre losing hair, and theyâll make sure you get the right treatment in case a medical condition is to blame.

Here are just some of the reasons you could have sudden hair loss.

Male-Pattern Baldness and Heart Disease: Science Explained

Researchers found 850 studies examining the link published over the last 60 years.

However, only six were of high quality and were selected for the review. Four were conducted in the US, one in Denmark and one in Croatia.

Three of the studies monitored men for at least 11 years and found those who had lost most of their hair were a third more likely to develop heart disease.

Men who went bald before middle age had a 44 per cent higher risk. The remaining three studies showed an increased risk of 70 per cent overall, rising to 84 per cent among those who went bald before age 55-60.

Men who lost most of their hair had more than twice the increased risk compared with those who lost only some of it.

How Hair Loss Happens

Although elevated testosterone causes baldness, not everyone with high levels of testosterone will lose hair, said George Cotsarelis, M.D., the Milton Bixler Hartzell Professor of Dermatology and chairman of the dermatology department at the University of Pennsylvania.

Most men who go bald also have acquired a genetic predisposition to baldnessbut not like the old wives tale that says if your maternal grandfather is bald, youll go bald, too. In fact, baldness can be passed down from either parent, the dermatologist explained.

Studies have shown that by the age of 50, about half of all men will have some degree of male pattern baldness, Cotsarelis said.

Losing hair usually happens over time. The hair follicle becomes smaller and smaller in the genetically determined area. This can start in the early teens and progress over decades, or begin in middle age.

Normally, hair grows and falls out. The follicle rests, then makes a new strand. However, when the follicle shrinks, the hair becomes thinner and shorter, often becoming almost microscopic over time. If you look closely at a balding head, you may see a smattering of short, thin hairs.

  • It is possible that these factors may be markers of biological age, which may influence cardiovascular risk. This might mean that there is little we can currently do to reduce this risk. There may also be genetic factors that link premature baldness or greyness with cardiovascular disease risk, but these have yet to be discovered.

It remains to be seen if male-pattern baldness or premature greying really are risk factors for cardiovascular disease across the general population. Until there is more evidence, it is best to be reminded that eating a healthy diet rich in fibre and getting regular exercise are excellent ways to reduce the risk of having heart problems in the future.

Baldness May Lead To Heart Attack

    • |

Men who are losing their hair may have bigger worries than just their appearance. Baldness can raise a mans risk of having a heart attack, a new study suggests.

And the more hair a man has lost, the greater the risk to his heart, according to the study published in the online journal BMJ Open.

Japanese researchers found that men who suffered hair loss from both the front and the crowns of their heads had a 69 percent higher risk of a non-fatal heart attack compared to those with a full head of hair.

Men who had just crown-top hair loss, or vertex baldness, were 52 percent more likely to have a heart attack compared to those with luxurious locks. While the researchers found a 22 percent higher risk in men with receding hairlines, but no other hair loss, that result wasnt statistically significant.

The findings suggest that men who are losing their hair should head over to the doctors office and get a check-up, concluded the research team, led by Dr. Tomohide Yamada, a researcher in the department of diabetes and metabolic diseases in the graduate school of medicine at the University of Tokyo.

Cardiovascular risk factors should be reviewed carefully in men with vertex baldness, especially younger men, and they probably should be encouraged to improve their cardiovascular risk profile, Yamada said.

The new findings werent a complete surprise to 59-year-old Jerry Blum. But he wishes that the study had come out years earlier.

Can Hair Loss Be A Sign Of The Coronary Heart Disease

Some Signs you are suffering from Lupus / myLot

You have hair loss problem What if baldness is a sign of the coronary heart disease?

Genetic factors, habits, some conditions can increase the risk of coronary heart disease.

There some risk factors for coronary heart diseases that you can not change such as age, sex, genetic..But there are some that can change such as smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol , obesity, diabetes, malnutrition, stress..

There is a scientific literature that was published at International Journal of Cardiology2014 According to this meta-analysis there is a link between baldness and coronary heart disease. 31 scientific studies investigated and scientists realized that alopecia is related with coronoray heart dieases risk. Scientists suggest that baldness can be seen as one of the potential risk for heart diseases. According the other result of this meta-analysis people who suffer from alopecia have higher risk for hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome.

So if you have hairloss problem, routine cardiologic examination can be more important for you.

How Does Pad Cause Hair Loss On The Legs

Hair follicles require nutrients to keep them healthy and to allow your hair to grow. Those nutrients are carried through the bloodstream. When people have PAD, their arteries are narrowed by plaque buildup. This makes it difficult for adequate blood and oxygen to provide nourishment to the muscles, tissue, and other parts of the leg, including the hair follicles.

When the hair follicles dont receive enough nutrition, the hair will stop growing. You may notice patches of hair loss on the legs. This may coincide with other symptoms, such as leg pain or numbness in the legs.

PAD is a progressive disease that can start with mild symptoms or none at all. Early detection and diagnosis of symptoms like leg pain and hair loss on the legs can help prevent the progression of the disease.

    Pale Or Discolored Skin

They say the rare complication in serious Covid cases means oxygen levels in the blood are low.

The CDC called it an “emergency warning sign” and said people should seek help immediately if you notice the change in color, along with trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, inability to stay awake, or new confusion.
