Psoralen Plus Ultraviolet A

How Does Life Change After A Psoriasis Diagnosis?

For this treatment, you’ll first be given a tablet containing compounds called psoralens, or psoralen may be applied directly to the skin. This makes your skin more sensitive to light.

Your skin is then exposed to a wavelength of light called ultraviolet A . This light penetrates your skin more deeply than ultraviolet B light.

This treatment may be used if you have severe psoriasis that has not responded to other treatment.

Side effects include nausea, headaches, burning and itchiness. You may need to wear special glasses for 24 hours after taking the tablet to prevent the development of cataracts.

Long-term use of this treatment is not encouraged, as it can increase your risk of developing skin cancer.

What Are Causes And Risk Factors Of Scalp Psoriasis

It is generally accepted that scalp psoriasis, like all psoriasis, is related to genetic defects that affect certain parts of the immune system. There are undoubtedly environmental risk factors that trigger its initial development in genetically predisposed individuals. The notion that “emotional stress” plays a causal role or at least exacerbates psoriasis has been difficult to prove. There is no question, however, that psoriasis of the scalp can be an extremely stressful experience.

Alcohol Use And Cosentyx

It should be safe to drink alcohol during your Cosentyx treatment.

However, alcohol can damage your liver. A drug thats used with Cosentyx, methotrexate , can also harm your liver. Drinking alcohol with methotrexate can raise your risk for liver problems. Therefore, you should avoid alcohol if youre using methotrexate to treat your condition.

Also, alcohol may trigger the condition youre using Cosentyx to treat, such as plaque psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis.

If you think alcohol, talk with your doctor about how much is safe for you to drink with your condition and treatment plan.

Cosentyx Use With Other Drugs

Sometimes Cosentyx can be used with other medications to be a more effective treatment.

For example, if you have psoriatic arthritis, you may take oral medications along with Cosentyx. These include methotrexate or hydroxychloroquine . The combination of Cosentyx and an oral medication may be more effective in treating psoriatic arthritis than taking Cosentyx alone.

Cosentyx should never be taken at the same time as other biologic medications, such as adalimumab , etanercept , or ustekinumab . This is because taking more than one biologic medication increases your risk for side effects, such as serious infections. Its very important that your doctor and pharmacist know all the medications and supplements that youre taking with Cosentyx.

Does Smoking Cause Hair Loss?

Secukinumab belongs to the class of medications called biological response modifiers .

Secukinumab is used to treat moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis in adults whose specialists have determined that systemic or phototherapy may be beneficial. It is also used to treat active psoriatic arthritis and active ankylosing spondylitis in adults who have not had an adequate response to other treatments.

For people with plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis, the body overproduces a protein called interleukin-17A . Secukinumab recognizes this protein and blocks the action of IL-17A, reducing the symptoms of these conditions.

This medication may be available under multiple brand names and/or in several different forms. What Is Scalp Psoriasis When Can Scalp Psoriasis Begin

Psoriasis is an inflammatory disease of the skin that is estimated to affect about 2.2% of the adult population. In children, the onset of psoriasis can be before the age of one year but peaks around 5-8 years. Psoriasis produces scaly, itchingbumps on the skin. Some people may have a genetic predisposition to psoriasis. The genes affected seem to be involved with control of the immune system. Psoriasis appears as red scaling, slightly raised bumps that merge to form plaques. Psoriasis classically appears on the elbows and knees, but it can affect any part of the skin. The scalp is also characteristically affected in many people. Like psoriasis anywhere on the body, scalp plaques produce excess scale and can itch. Severe disease can cause a loss of scalp hair, which usually will return if the disease can be controlled. Scalp psoriasis somewhat difficult to treat when the scalp is covered with hair sufficient to act a barrier to the application of topical medications.

Granuloma Annulare And Related Cutaneous Granulomatous Conditions

Chen and associates stated that granuloma annulare , a benign inflammatory skin disease, is considered a Th1-type delayed hypersensitivity reaction. Localized GA is likely to resolve spontaneously, whereas disseminated GA may persist for decades and can be resistant to treatment. Biologics including TNF- inhibitors have been proposed and utilized as salvage therapy for GA and other related diseases, actinic granuloma , and interstitial granulomatous dermatitis . These investigators carried out a systematic review using the combination of search terms “granuloma annulare”, “interstitial granulomatous dermatitis”, or “actinic granuloma” and either “biologics”, “etanercept”, “adalimumab”, “infliximab”, “ustekinumab”, “ixekizumab”, “secukinumab”, “guselkumab”, “golimumab”, “brodalumab”, “tildrakizumab” or “certolizumab” from 1970 to 2017. Review of the literature revealed that 79.3 % of the patients with GA, IGD, or AG who had been treated with TNF- inhibitor therapy showed a clinical response. The authors concluded that TNF- inhibitor therapy has been used to treat chronic GA, IGD, and AG that involved extensive BSA. However, the literature is limited to case series lacking control groups. These researchers stated that RCTs are needed to establish evidence-based treatment of GA and related cutaneous, granulomatous conditions.

How Do Health Care Professionals Diagnose Scalp Psoriasis

The fact that the scalp is a hair-bearing area in most people produces challenges in diagnosis as well as treatment. If scaling plaques are present on portions of the body in a distribution characteristic of psoriasis, then the diagnosis of the scalp disease is much easier to make.

The most important consideration in treating scalp psoriasis is getting an effective medication into the skin. Both the hair and any scale covering the disease act as an impediment to treatment. Removal of the scale in a nontraumatic fashion is very important. This can be accomplished by shampooing frequently. Using tar, selenium, or salicylic acid-containing shampoos can be helpful. This may have to be done at least twice a day initially if the scale is sufficiently thick. Gently rubbing off the scale with the fingertips and not the nails is important.

How Should I Use Cosentyx

Use Cosentyx exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose.

Cosentyx is injected under the skin.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you don’t understand how to use an injection.

Prepare an injection only when you are ready to give it. You may need to use 2 injections to get your total dose.

Cosentyx should be clear or light-yellow. Call your pharmacist if the liquid Cosentyx in your vial, pen, or syringe looks cloudy, has changed colors, or has particles in it.

Your healthcare provider will show you where to inject Cosentyx. Do not inject into the same place two times in a row. Avoid injecting into skin that is hard, red, bruised, swollen, tender, or affected by psoriasis. Do not inject within 2 inches of your navel .

You may get infections more easily, even serious infections. You will need frequent medical tests.

Do not reuse a needle or syringe. Place them in a puncture-proof “sharps” container and dispose of it following state or local laws. Keep out of the reach of children and pets.

Store Cosentyx in the original container in a refrigerator. Protect from light and do not shake or freeze.

Take the injection pen out of the refrigerator and let it reach room temperature for 15 to 30 minutes before using. Give the injection within 1 hour after removing the medicine from a refrigerator.

Weight Loss Diet Can Help If Youre Overweight

If you have psoriasis and are overweight, losing weight can:

  • Lead to less psoriasis on your skin

  • Make psoriasis medication more effective

These effects can happen quickly, according to studies. In one small study of patients with psoriasis who were overweight, half of the patients followed a low-calorie diet. In just 16 weeks, the patients following the low-calorie diet had less psoriasis than the non-dieting group of patients with psoriasis.

During a clinical trial, dermatologists saw similar results. In this trial, dermatologists enrolled 303 patients with long-term plaque psoriasis. All patients were overweight and receiving treatment for psoriasis. Even with treatment, all continued to have psoriasis on their skin.

In this clinical trial, half the patients were given a diet to follow and advice about the importance of exercising. The other group of patients was given information about how weight loss could be helpful. All patients were asked to lose 5% of their body weight within 20 weeks.

Patients in both groups lost weight. Those who lost 5% of their body weight had far less psoriasis on their skin. This trial shows that even a small amount of weight loss can reduce the amount of psoriasis on your skin.

Weight loss can help because both psoriasis and being overweight increase inflammation in your body. When you reduce inflammation, it can lead to less psoriasis on your skin.

Before starting a weight loss diet, talk with your dermatologist
