Study Discovers Cells That Put Hair Follicles To Sleep
In male and female pattern baldness, many hair follicles still exist but are dormant. The search for new drugs that reawaken follicles and induce hair growth has been limited by the fields focus on finding drugs that work along the same pathways as finasteride and minoxidil, the only two drugs currently available for men with male pattern baldness.
Christiano and her colleagues previously discovered a new pathway, called JAK-STAT, that is active inside the stem cells of resting hair follicles and keeps them in a dormant state. They previously demonstrated that JAK inhibitors applied to mouse skin are a potent way to reawaken resting hair follicles in mice.
In their latest study, the researchers wanted to get a detailed picture of the natural processes that keep follicles dormant, so they looked for factors that controlled the JAK pathway activity in the hair follicle.
Laser Combs: The Star Trek Solution
For those concerned that the existing treatments lack a certain sci-fi quality, behold the Laser Comb. The Laser Comb recently became only the third hair loss treatment to receive FDA approval. And it is the first that doesnât use drugs or surgery. By stimulating follicles with a low-level laser, the hand-held device was shown in test trials to increase hair volume in a majority of patients.
The 545 dollar product is a source of great optimism among some — and some wariness among others. “We’ve definitely seen some benefit, probably on the order of minoxidil,” Bernstein says. “But the study was only six months long. And there’s suspicion among many of us about the long-term effectiveness. The process doesn’t affect DHT.”
Treatment Options For Androgenetic Alopecia

ABSTRACT: Androgenetic alopecia , or male pattern baldness, is the most common cause of hair loss in men. There are several therapies available for the treatment of this condition, with 5-alpha reductase inhibitors and minoxidil most commonly used. Other current treatment options include laser therapy, scalp microneedling, hair mesotherapy, and hair transplantation. The development of new pharmacologic therapies has been slow however, research is currently being conducted using Janus kinase inhibitors and autologous platelet-rich plasma injections in men with AGA.
Androgenetic alopecia , or male pattern baldness, is a common condition that causes many men to seek medical attention. It is characterized by hair follicles that gradually decrease in size and lead to baldness over time. AGA affects approximately 80% of Caucasian males. Although it is common in men of different ethnic backgrounds, Caucasian males are affected more frequently.1 Traditionally, pharmacologic treatment of AGA targets decreasing dihydrotestosterone and stimulating hair follicles through the use of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors or minoxidil however, new and experimental therapies are exploring inhibition of Janus kinase and the use of platelet-rich plasma . Other therapies include laser therapy, scalp microneedling, hair mesotherapy, and hair transplantation.1

Does Coconut Oil Help Your Hair
In addition to being good for your scalp, coconut oil also moisturizes your hair. Since it’s easily absorbed, it works better than other oils at repairing dry hair. Keep in mind that coconut oil alone may not be effective as a shampoo to cleanse hair, but as a pre-shampoo treatment, it will condition hair.
Liquid Hair Loss Treatment
Initially used to treat high blood pressure, minoxidil was the first medication approved by the FDA to treat male pattern baldness. By applying Rogaine directly to the scalp twice a day, a man in the early stages of hair loss can often stimulate growth. The American Hair Loss Association points out that results of treatment with minoxidil are limited, but it still endorses using it in combination with other treatments or as an alternative if finasteride doesn’t work.
“I caution patients to try it for a limited time,” Bernstein says. “Because it’s not as simple as a pill, use isn’t always regular, and you end up losing whatever you gained.”
Side effects of minoxidil are limited to occasional itchiness and dry scalp.

How To Prevent Hair Loss: 5 Ways To Avoid It
Hair loss for most men, called androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness, is largely a result of hormones working against your hair follicles, reducing their ability to grow strong, long hair over time.
Depending on those inherited traits, you may experience hair loss as soon as your 20s, and men often see hair loss begin in their 30s.
While you cant change your genetics, there are treatment options and lifestyle practices that can help combat hair loss. The best thing is to start these preventive practices sooner than later.
A Change In Your Hairline
The most obvious first sign of balding is a noticeable change in your hairline that you can clearly see.
Baldness often begins in the hairline, with the flat or mildly receded hairline you previously had turned into a more obvious M-shaped hairline.
For most people, this begins around the temples and the crown and often starts with thinning hair rather than total hair loss.
If you can compare two photos taken years apart and see that your hairline has receded, its an obvious sign that youre suffering from hair loss.
One important thing to be aware of is that lighting conditions can affect the appearance of your hairline.
Hair may appear thinner in bright downlighting .
This makes it important to compare photos with similar lighting conditions, not one photo taken in natural light and another taken in bright artificial light.
If youre really concerned about hair loss, you can photograph your hairline or the top of your head every few months in the same lighting conditions to see if your hairline is receding.
Over the course of a year or two, you should be able to determine whether or not youre losing hair around your hairline.
If you notice hair loss, its important that you take action as soon as possible to prevent it from getting worse.

Why Hair Falls Out
Hair grows and eventually falls out as part of its normal cycle. It can build up on hair brushes, pillows, or shower drains.
Most people will not notice the natural hair loss that occurs daily. Hair thickness and the hairline usually remain the same.
People are more likely to notice excessive hair loss. This is a good time to take action as it may be due to an underlying condition. Symptoms of excessive hair loss include:
- sudden loss of hair
- noticeable thinning
There are several possible reasons for excessive hair loss.
One of the most common causes is due to genetics. According to a 2019 review, pattern baldness affects up to 50% of men and women.
Commercial products could help to slow and treat this type of balding. One example of these products is Rogaine.
Pattern baldness occurs slowly with aging. Some more immediate causes of hair loss include:
Complications Of Hair Transplantation Surgery
Complications of hair transplant surgery can include:
- Infection this can occur because the skin is broken to perform the procedure. It can be treated with antibiotics.
- Bleeding this is usually controlled through careful post-operative care.
- Scarring this may occur at the site of removal of the donor follicles.
- Temporary, operation-induced hair loss known as telogen effluvium, can occur with hair transplantation, as well as some other operations. It occurs in approximately five per cent of people.
- Unacceptable cosmetic results scarring and poor cosmetic results are more common when hair transplants are carried out by inexperienced practitioners.
Many hair clinics offer hair transplantation. Specialist dermatologists are best qualified to properly advise about this surgery and have the most knowledge about hair in health and disease.

So Can You Stop Hair Loss If Yes How
I immediately went back on Google this morning to see exactly what most websites say when I searched about stopping hair loss.
They go on to give a bunch of ways in which you could try and stop your hair from continuing to fall out.
Below are a few things they mention.
Taking prescription or OTC drugs such as rogaine or propecia.
Getting hair transplants.
Making certain lifestyle changes such as not smoking, stressing less, eating a more balanced diet etc.
Recommending not washing your hair that often, not brushing wet hair or even brushing too aggressively.
Applying certain oils to your hair and scalp.
Avoid too much heat or dryness.
Rub garlic juice, onion juice or ginger juice on your scalp.
Keep yourself hydrated.
And so the list goes on!
To be fair, I remember actually trying a lot of these tips and tricks on how to stop hair loss.
I remember sitting at home with a head full of olive oil, feeling like a complete, oily mess!
But do any of these pieces of advice actually work?
Its a hard one to answer, as everyone is different.
I think it all comes down to the cause of your hair loss.
If you are going bald because of male pattern baldness or anything genetic, then unfortunately nothing will actually help in preventing or stopping hair loss.
I tried everything, and nothing ever really worked. I even bought super expensive shampoo that supposedly stops hair loss.
