Give Yourself A Scalp Massage

Healthy hair requires oxygenated blood and a steady flow of nutrients. When blood flow to the scalp becomes compromised, it can affect hair growth and thickness. A simple solution to try is giving yourself a scalp massage a few times a week.

Massaging the scalp can increase circulation to the scalp and may actually stretch the hair follicles to improve thickness and length.

In a small 2016 study that involved only nine people, researchers found that men who received a four-minute scalp massage each day had thicker hair after 24 weeks than they did at the start of the study.

According to self-reported findings published in a 2019 study, men who self-administered scalp massage twice daily reported an improvement in alopecia.

For both women and men, its important to see adermatologist for many reasons if youre experiencing hair thinning:

  • Dermatologists can offer expert advice and help you get to the root of the problem more quickly than if you try to self-diagnose the issue on your own.
  • You can be prescribed medications, and get a biopsy if necessary.
  • Sometimes, your dermatologist will identify a more serious underlying medical issue that is causing your hair to fall out.

The only way to treat hair loss effectively is to identify the cause, said Dr. Kevin DeHart. We look at each patients total health history in order to diagnose them. There are a lot of reasons for hair loss, and its everything from a thyroid issue to a new medication to a recent trauma.

The best course of action is determined in part by the type of thinning you have. A scalp biopsy may be done in order to see hairs under the skin. Working alongside Dr. Kevin DeHart and Dr. Kelly DeHart, ParisersDr. Ashley Reed performs biopsies for us and helps determine the diagnosis. However, scalp biopsy is not common and only 10 percent of patients who come to Pariser Dermatology for thinning hair need a scalp biopsy.

Under the microscope youre going to see different things, for example the follicle size of the hair. This can show us, for example, whether testosterone has influenced the hair loss or if broken hairs indicate trichotillomania, which is pulling out hairs.

What Are The Phases Of Hair Growth

To better understand the different causes of hair thinning, it may help to better understand the four phases of a normal hair growth cycle1:

  • It starts with the anagen phase, better known as the growth phase. This first phase can last anywhere from 3-5 years and at any given time, about 90% of the hair on our head is in this phase. Anagen begins with the scalp pushing out new hair follicles, which continue to grow until the shedding phase or until they are cut.
  • The second phase is the catagen or transitional phase, which lasts around 10 days and is where the hair follicles shrink, and hair growth subsides.
  • The third phase is telogen, which lasts around 3 months and is when the follicle is at rest and no growth is occurring.
  • Exogen or the shedding phase, is the fourth and final stage of hair growth, where hair is shed from the scalp after this phase, the process starts again.
  • What Can Women Do For Thinning Hair

If youre currently struggling with thinning, there are a variety of things you can do to better support your hair health.

First, take a look at your hair styling routine. If there is anything damaging or harsh about it, consider working with your stylist to find a look that requires fewer chemical or heat elements. You can also try loosening your ponytail or bun for a softer look and to take the stress off your follicles.

As our thyroid plays a role in our hair health, if you have any concerns about how yours is functioning, be sure to check in with your healthcare provider. They can easily test your blood to determine the amounts of hormones being released by your thyroid gland, enabling them to detect any issues and treat them accordingly.

Revisiting what youre eating daily can certainly help support better hair health, too. Consider switching to a heart healthy, nutrient rich diet, such as the Mediterranean diet, to support your hair health and maintain better overall health and wellness. You can also consider adding in specific dietary supplements if youre not getting enough nutrients through your diet alone.

Other tips to nourish your hair from the inside include evolving older lifestyle habits into healthy, vibrant ones. If you smoke, quit. Reduce stress levels by trying out meditation or yoga and consider switching to mocktails or zero-proof beverages instead of alcohol.

    Thinning Hair Vs Hair Loss

Before digging into the details of what causes thinning hair, lets take a moment to explore the issue and what makes it different from hair loss.

The clinical term for hair loss is alopecia. Alopecia is something of an umbrella term there are several different types of alopecia, each characterized by specific patterns of hair loss or certain triggers.

Hair thinning is generally considered a form of progressive hair loss and is a common symptom of androgenetic alopecia or male pattern baldness.

Thinning hair tends to develop slowly over time. In men, it often begins with the hairline and recedes toward the back of the head.

When hair thinning or loss is concentrated in round patches on the scalp, it is often related to a condition called alopecia areata.

    Can You Measure Hair Loss

Yes. Doctors use the Savin scale. It ranges from normal hair density to a bald crown, which is rare. The scale helps document female pattern baldness, a condition your doctor might call androgenic alopecia. You probably know it as male pattern baldness, but it affects about 30 million American women. Experts think genes and aging play a role, along with the hormonal changes of menopause. Your hair could thin all over, with the greatest loss along the center of the scalp.
