Along with finasteride , minoxidil is one of the only medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of genetic hair loss . Although both drugs are proven alopecia treatments, many hair loss sufferers worry about the potential side effects specifically, the reported sexual side effects associated with finasteride.

Most studies believe sexual side effects occur in approximately 0.3-3% of Propecia users, and agree that most dysfunction subsides after stopping the medication. However, unlike Propecia, the potential for sexual side effects with minoxidil usage has not been extensively studied. So, this leaves many individuals wondering: can Rogaine cause sexual side effects?

To answer this important question, Coalition hair transplant surgeon Dr. Paul Rose researched the issue, and published an article about minoxidil and sexual side effects at our Hair Restoration Discussion Forums:

Dr Rose:

In the fall of 2012, researchers at Johns Hopkins University made a startling discovery: finasteride, known most commonly by the brand name Propecia, appeared to cause long term sexual side effects for a number of males who were using the prescription medication to treat hair loss.

Things to Know About Rogaine

Shortcomings of Rogaine

Reason #: Minoxidil Use Is Somewhat Impractical

As youll quickly find out or as youve already discovered you have to plan your life AROUND Minoxidil use, rather than have the drug fit into your busy lifestyle.

There are a number of conditions you have to watch out for when applying Minoxidil to your scalp, both before and after:

Make sure your hair and scalp are completely dry before applying this medicine .

Do not shampoo your hair for 4 hours after applying minoxidil.

Immediately after using this medicine, wash your hands to remove any medicine that may be on them.

Allow the minoxidil to completely dry for 2 to 4 hours after applying it, including before going to bed. Minoxidil can stain clothing, hats, or bed linen if your hair or scalp is not fully dry after using the medicine.

And good luck if you want to go swimming soon after taking Minoxidil. To avoid getting your hair wet, youll likely have to wear a swim cap in order to take full advantage of Minoxidils effect on your scalp.

So far the trade-off doesnt appear to be worth it!

How To Use Minoxidil For Hair

Unless you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, minoxidil should be safe for you to use. The OG minoxidil product is Rogaine, and there are versions oriented toward women formulated with two percent and five percent of the ingredient, in both liquid and foam. Hers offers hair regrowth drops with two percent minoxidil. While both products are very similar, Hers is a tiny bit cheaper and has an overall more pleasant look. Rogaine is more widely available at pharmacies and on Amazon, while Hers must be ordered directly from the brand online.

Directions will vary depending on the product most serums are topically applied. For a product like Hers, follow these steps:

  • Apply about 1 ml of product to the scalp on damp or dry hair
  • Do not wash out for at least four hours
  • Repeat twice a day

Since hair loss is complex and can be triggered by a number of factorsstress, changes in your hormones, recent illness, vegetarian or low protein diets, and rapid weight lossBrenda Dintiman, a Virginia-based dermatologist, advises that if youre experiencing serious hair loss, youd be wise to consult a professional. A board-certified dermatologist can sort out whats causing your hair loss and combine topical minoxidil with supplements like vitamin D and dietary recommendations to get your hair glossy, growing, and full again,” she says.

Talk With A Doctor If Youre Concerned About Hair Loss

Rogaine is available over the counter. Even so, if youre dealing with hair loss, its a good idea to talk with your doctor before starting treatment. Your doctor can help you rule out other causes of hair loss that may be treatable, such as low thyroid hormone levels or a nutrient deficiency.

You should also visit your doctor if:

  • your hair loss is sudden
  • your head itches or burns
  • your hair is falling out in clumps
  • you have bald patches

I Just Started Using Rogaine Products And I’ve Noticed That My Hair Loss Has Increased Is This Typical

ROGAINE® products stimulate hair follicles to shift from the resting phase to the growth phase. Thus, it is not uncommon to see a temporary increase in shedding during the first 2 weeks using ROGAINE® products. This occurs in some people as the new hair pushes out the older hairs, when the hair follicle shifts into the growth phase. It is very much like losing baby teeth to make room for adult teeth. This increase in shedding is only temporary and should subside within a couple of weeks with continued treatment. Please note, however, if increased shedding continues for longer than 2 weeks, you should consult your doctor to rule out other possible medical problems.

Use Of Minoxidil In Hair Disorders

Topical minoxidil has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of AGA. What Is Minoxidil Shedding

Hair Loss Minoxidil Side Effects

Minoxidil shedding is when men experience increased hair loss after using Minoxidil. This minoxidil shedding is expected as the weak hair strands that do not have enough nutrition and oxygen fall out.

While this may most certainly spark a sense of anxiety, it is a normal process as the Minoxidil starts to alter how your scalp produces hair.

Remember, Minoxidil does not directly treat the cause of hair loss or male pattern baldness. Instead, it acts as a catalyst to improve hair growth and inspire your hair follicles to start producing new strands.

  • Scalp examination under a microscope and trichoscopy.

Your dermatologist will examine the area with hair loss carefully and look at your nails. Your dermatologist will also ask some questions. This may be enough to diagnose you.

Because there are so many reasons for hair loss, testing is sometimes necessary to make sure alopecia areata is the cause of your hair loss.

A blood test can look for other diseases caused by the immune system. Sometimes, other tests are necessary.

If you have alopecia areata, your dermatologist will talk with you about how the disease is affecting your life and whether treatment is recommended.
