Medications That Can Cause Hair Loss

There are many reasons your hair might be falling out, including the side effects of certain medications. Find out if a medication you are taking is causing temporary hair loss or male or female pattern baldness.

It is normal to lose a bit of hair each day as you comb and style it. But if your hair loss is excessive or you are experiencing balding, certain medications you may be taking could be to blame.

In most cases, medications lead to temporary hair loss, and your hair will grow back once you adjust the dose or stop taking the medication. In other cases, however, medications can cause you to develop male or female pattern baldness, leading to permanent hair loss.

If you are concerned that a medication you are taking may be contributing to your balding, ask your pharmacist for a complete list of the manufacturer’s warnings for the medication. It may be that hair loss is a potential side effect of your medication.

Is Hair Loss A Minor Side Effect Many Drugs May Cause It

Q. I have heard that many medications can cause hair loss. Is this side effect temporary? Does the hair grow back when the drug is stopped?

A. A surprising number of medications can cause temporary hair loss including blood pressure drugs and pain relievers. Most of the time, hair grows back when the drugs are discontinued. One reader shared this story:

When my cardiologist prescribed statins for my high cholesterol, I had terrible side effects. The hair loss was so bad that I had to wear a scarf when cooking to keep my hair out of the food. I stopped the drugs under doctors supervision and fortunately my hair grew back.

We have listed some common drugs that may cause hair loss in our Guide to Hair and Nail Care. They range from the powerful acne medicine isotretinoin to arthritis drugs like celecoxib or ibuprofen and PPI acid-suppressor medications such as esomeprazole , lansoprazole , omeprazole , pantoprazole or rabeprazole . Thus, this side effect can affect a wide range of ages and conditions. While many doctors consider it a minor side effect, patients may be less accepting unless the drug is being used to treat a life-threatening disease such as cancer.

Citalopram And Hair Loss: A Side Effect

Citalopram and hair loss as a side effect of taking the medication has been a topic that generates a lot of panic in some people.

It has been evidenced in some cases that hair loss accelerates when the dose of Citalopram is increased.

Losing hair, in general, is very distressing for both men and women but when the hair loss becomes evident or noticeable, that is when some people start panicking.

Hairloss can happen for multiple reasons such as aging, extremely stressful situations, hormonal imbalances, anemia or due to certain medications.

In the case of medications, if you started taking Citalopram or any other medication, this could be happening as a side effect but it is usually temporary.
