Use A Thickening Product
“Thickening shampoos, conditioners and sprays contain special polymers which plump up the hair shafts to make them look fuller,” says Daniel Morrissey, franchise owner at Toni & Guy. The effects are only temporary so you’ll need to use them regularly but they can increase hair thickness by up to 20 per cent.
Mens Hair Grooming: 9 Ways To Style Thin Hair
1. Cut It Short
Many men with thin hair try to grow out their hair or part it differently to cover bald spots. But actually, shorter hairstyles are way more flattering for thin and fine hair.
This is because long hair is heavy, so it has less volume at the roots. Short hair, on the other hand, is more lightweight, so it looks good in volumized styles. Men tend to lose their hair on top, so keeping the hair shorter on the sides helps to blend everything together and make those thin areas less apparent.
Men who have a bit more hair to work with should ask their barber for a hairstyle with short sides and a little more length on top. If youre further along in your hair loss journey, ask your barber for a close crop.
2. Wash Your Hair Often
Most guys with thinning hair are afraid to wash their hair too often. Unfortunately, too-greasy hair clumps together, creating more scalp show-through. But dont worry, its a myth that washing your hair too often makes it fall out! In fact, washing your hair can help make your hair look thicker by reducing the oiliness that weighs down strands, giving hair more volume.
Just make sure to select a gentle shampoo that wont dry out your hair or scalp, like Toppik Hair Building Shampoo. This lightweight formula doesnt weigh hair down and leaves it healthier and fuller-looking. For best results, follow with Toppik Hair Building Conditioner after shampooing.
3. Try Dry Shampoo
4. Use a Thickening Serum
5. Choose the Right Hair Products
If You’re Open To Other Solutions
Consider getting a texture wave. “Unlike the perms of the ’80s, these texture-creating waves are done on much larger rods and use gentler chemicals,” Michon Kessler, stylist at Studio M salon in Reno, Nevada told TODAY Style. This option should only be considered if you have strong enough hair that has not been weakened by color. Consult a professional for recommendations.
Nunzio Saviano, of Nunzio Saviano Salon in New York City, recommends a microblading treatment around the hairline so hair appears more voluminous and the scalp is less pronounced. Results can can camouflage problem areas and results last up to 18 months.

Hair Regrowth For Men
For men who are leading a healthy life and still experiencing thinning on the top of their head, hair growth products and treatments can provide a suitable option. To achieve the best results, choose a Minoxidil topical treatment, which stimulates hair follicles to help grow new strands. Alternatively, a hair transplant may be considered for those who have had no luck regrowing their hair.
Use The Right Styling Products

If you’re using heavy waxes and gels on thinning hair you’re not doing it any favours. “These can weigh hair down making it look thin and flat,” says Enzo Volpe, stylist at Michael John salon. “The most effective styling product to give hair volume is mousse, along with sprays developed to give the hair “root lift.”

How To Make Hair Look Thicker
Weve recommended a lot of products but how to use them? Well, you dont have to use them all but here is what a hair styling routine could look like.
- Wash hair with thickening shampoo and conditioner
- Towel hair off
- Work a thickening spray or sea salt through damp hair
- Air dry until hair is damp-dry
- Blow dry with fingers or a brush
- Apply mousse or styling powder
- Use a thickening, wax, or clay pomade or hair putty
- Set the look with hair spray
While professional stylists may use all these steps, they are not all necessary. The thickening shampoo and/or conditioner is a must. Other than that pick one, two, or maximum three products to use.
Pomades That Thicken Hair
Pomade is the most familiar hair product for most guys and it can also enhance thin or fine hair. Some pomades advertise their thickening properties while others dont mention it. Texturizing pomades with clay, wax, or fibers and hair putties also boost thickness and volume.
In terms of hold, that depends on your hair type, length, and style. In general, low to medium hold is best for fine, thin, and curly hair types. Use a strong hold for shorter hair and high volume looks. Hold really varies by brand so look for other qualities first.
Other than that, be sure to use a matte product because shine can weigh hair down and make it look thinner. Heres what to look for.

Use Dry Texture Spray
If youre in need of some quick volume boosting but dont want a product thats going to weigh your hair down, try a dry texture spray. By simply lifting sections of your hair and giving a light spray at the root of every section, youll increase your thickness by adding to your hair. And once youve finished spraying, just quickly go over your hair with a brush or comb to take care of any loose strands of hair.
Another product that works in a similar way is saltwater sprays that are designed to mimic the look and feel you get after spending the afternoon in the ocean. Unlike dry texture sprays, these will give you a bit of a volume boost while adding a little more wave or curl to your hair. Theyre great if youre going for a messy look.
A Receding Hairline Is No Match For This Outgoing Style

If you have thin hair and a receding hairline, youve just met your new best friend. This style, as sported here by U2s Bono, is an excellent look that uses the receding hairline to its advantage. The brushed up style adds volume in the right places, and the slightly unkempt hair adds presence. You dont need to despise your hairline any longer!

The Right Hair Styling Product For Thinning Hair
Many guys will need a bit of product to keep things in place and further thicken the hair.
Rule number one for your hair type – Stay the hell away from pomades, gels, and waxes. Anything water-based or that gives you that wet look will be detrimental to your hairstyle and all the work we just did up until this point.
You need something lighter that will not weigh the hair down. Your fine hair doesnt stand a chance against heavy-weight products. The fine hair doesnt have enough strength to push back against the gravity of a heavy hairstyling product.
Any light cream or even mousse works well if you dont need too much hold or have a simpler hairstyle. Clays will tend to work well also. Any styling product that has less shine and has more of a mineral base tends to do well.
Use a minimal amount to start. You can always add more, but you cant go back. Dont ruin all the work we just put in by overdoing the product. Make sure its emulsified in your hands before applying to the hair. It should go on nearly transparent. Make sure to coat the hair from root to tip to help the hair stand up. Any of these will be okay depending on your price point, your unique styling methods, etc.
Dont Rely On Shampoo And Conditioner
You might be under the impression that voluminous hair starts with a volume-boosting shampoo and conditioner, but Hersheson says its more about what you dont do at this stage. Using the wrong conditioner, or too much of it, can weigh hair down and make it feel flatter, which in turn will make it appear thinner, he says. Id advise against using hair masks and heavy conditioner, to help maintain volume and body.

Hairspray To Help Hold Things Together
One mistake I see many guys make is using more or heavier styling products to help hold their hairstyles all day. The problem is that adding more product or heavier product will be terrible for your hair, as we just discussed.
But what do you do if your hairstyle isnt holding throughout the day?
Hairspray.
Styling products are meant to get you the shape you desire, hairspray is your protective coating, locking in that shape for the day.
Dont go cheap here. Bad hairsprays are filled with chemicals your hair hates, and they give you that crunchy feeling. Instead, get a light finishing spray. Ive been recommending Kevin Murphy products to specific clients for years, and this hairspray is perfect for finishing your hairstyle.
Thin Hair With Receding Hairline
A part placed closer to the mid hairline has the advantage of leaving enough length below to act as a second cover for the receding hairline of the dreaded male pattern baldness. Sort of like a dual comb-over curtain cut. If not ready to crop your remaining length down to a more standard regulation cut, this style could be what your ego needs.

No one wants to lose their hair but for 25 per cent of men under thirty, it’s inevitable. That number rises to over 60 per cent by the time you’re sixty. For those unlucky enough to suffer from tonsorial trauma, there’s little to be done to reverse the shedding process altogether.
Pick A Thickening Shampoo And Conditioner
If you don’t want to try expensive extensions or experiment with supplements, there’s always the tried-and-true method of volumizing: opting for a thickening or volumizing shampoo and conditioner. “I prefer to go with the work-with-what-you-have approach by using hair products and styling tools to create volume, thickness, and texture,” says Devin Toth, celebrity stylist at Salon SCK in New York City.
“Shampoos and conditioners labeled volumizing or thickening usually contain fewer conditioning ingredients, so they dont weigh hair down, explains GH Beauty Lab Chemist Danusia Wnek. Theyre a good foundation for styling products the GH Beauty Lab recommends using the matching shampoo and conditioner set for best results, as they are formulated to work together.
