Add Layers To Your Hair

How to make thin hair look thicker using 2 simple techniques

Do you remember the amazing layer cut Rachel had in Friends? Well, that haircut is about to be your best friend because it is the perfect cut to fake volume into your tresses. The 90s layer haircut will give an illusion of bouncy, voluminous hair while also framing your face to perfection! If youre not a fan of this cut, you can always ask your hairstylist to give you a multi-layered cut.

BB pro tip: Go for highlights and lowlights with this haircut for an extra boost of volume!

Nioxin Shampoo And Conditioner

Nioxin is a brand of shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated for thinning hair. I also use these daily, and I love the way my hair feels. According to Nioxin, their products gently remove residue and DHT from the hair and scalp, and provide nourishing vitamins, proteins, and amino acids.

There are six different Nioxin systems on the market:

  • System 1 For natural hair with light thinning.
  • System 2 For natural hair with progressed thinning.
  • System 3 For colored hair with light thinning.
  • System 4 For colored hair with progressed thinning.
  • System 5 For chemically-treated hair with light thinning.
  • System 6 For chemically-treated hair with progressed thinning.

Each system includes a shampoo, conditioner, and scalp treatment. I skip the scalp treatment because I use Rogaine instead. I also dont buy the kits for sale on the Nioxin website. Instead, I buy large bottles of the shampoo and conditioner separately on Amazon, and they last for months.

The Trouble With Thinning Hair

There are powders available for men with thinning hair but invariably men either dont know about these or they simply dont want to use them, says Guastella. In my opinion they should though.

All you have to do is gently administer the powder onto the hair and it attaches to the existing hair and to the scalp, he continues. There are an incredible array of colours available so you simply find the one that best matches you.

It is important to read the instructions on these powders every carefully so you put them in properly. As with most things in life, practice makes perfect. And the better you get at it, the better you will look. Lots of famous names are already at it, as Guastella explains.

Experimenting with different styles at different lengths is the only way to find out which look suits you the best.

David Beckham is an example of someone who had fine thinning hair, he says. He has had a hair transplant, but that cant simply turn fine hair into thick hair, it doesnt work like that. So he uses a lot of powder in his hair. That is a well-known fact: the most influential man in mens grooming uses powder and because its put in so well his hair appears luxuriously thick and full.

There does come a point during the thinning process when powder should definitely be avoided.

If you have really, really thinning hair, avoid powder as the product wont have enough hair to attach to and just look awkward on the scalp, advises Guastella.

“Girls with fine but curly hair need to work with their natural texture. If you blow dry and straighten your hair it will damage your hair and make it look more fine! If you have curly fine hair, take advantage of the beautiful texture and work more volume into it,” Kylee Heath, celebrity hairstylist to Sofia Vergara, tells BuzzFeed Life.

Medium Length Shag + Fringe

5 Tips To Make Thin Fine Hair Look Thicker

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is my take on a modern shag. My favorite thing about it is the fringe! I think it looks perfect on her.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To maintain this look, you would probably need a fringe trim every three to four weeks. For products, I used Davines Dry Texture Spray, then ran the Oí Oil through her midshaft and ends. I didnt use a hot tool and styled her as I was drying with my fingers .

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I think the shag is really a great cut for any face shape. Its both versatile and edgy! It works well with straight or curly hair, so your texture wont be an issue. I think the bangs are great for someone that has a shorter forehead because helps in creating the illusion that you dont!

Q& A with style creator, Shelby WallaceCosmetologist in Georgia

How would you describe this look?

This hairstyle incorporates many different techniques to give the locks a fuller appearance. The long layers, highlights, shadow root, and curls all distract the eyes from the amount of hair. Instead, we see contrast and movement, which is generally associated with long hair.

What I love about this style is how versatile it is that anyone can wear it! Its very customizable so you can tweak the color or length and still have the desired effect!

Any advice for someone considering it?

Since the root can be blended with your natural roots, this color is more low maintenance than most. However, to get the most out of this style, curls are key! My favorite products to use when curling are Keune Salt Mousse and Salt Spray.

These products are good to put in before blow-drying and using a curling iron to help thin hair hold in that amazing volume and curl without weighing it down. Dont feel like curling it? Put some braids in after showering and take them out in the morning to get a beautiful natural wave.

Keep Your Hair And Scalp Healthy

This seems like a given, but getting great-looking hair is nearly impossible when you’re constantly damaging it. “If women want thicker-looking hair, they should minimize the use of heat styling tools and refrain from using too much conditioner in the shower,” Toth advises. Taking precautions like using heat protectant spray and not over-washing your hair can help it look thicker and stronger over time, too, by minimizing breakage and hair loss. And lay off the tight hairstyles, too!

Long Hair Is Cut Into Layers

Cutting layers style is well for thin hairs. The layers of hair will help your hair look thicker. You will not use chemistry or high temperature for hair to create style. That is amazing with weak hair girls to make their hair thicker that does not harm hair.

Here, Anne Hathaway with long hair is cut layers style and outstanding color dyeing. She looks great with much thicker hair.

Asley Graham with wavy layers style is so beautiful and always looks thick and shiny.

Short Hair With Pops Of Pink

How To Make Thin Hair Look Thicker | TODAY

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is pink pops of candy! My favorite thing about it is the dimension you get with the blonde and then BAM surprise. Some fun color in between!

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

Unfortunately, when you have highlights of fantasy colors in your hair it is harder to maintain. Always ask your stylist to make the color more vibrant so it fades out slower and use color-safe shampoo! I always recommend shampoos from Surface Hair. They have color lock vita complex in all of their products and they are 100% vegan!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This color is great for someone that doesnt wash their hair a lot or doesnt mind coming back to the salon monthly. It fades out, but the great part is that when you return you can have something completely different and start with a fresh palette.

Got Thin Hair Follow This Pinch Hair Hack To Make Your Hair Look Thick

  • 08 Nov 2021, 15:13 IST

Every woman wishes for fuller, healthy tresses. However, not all of us are blessed with thick hair. A lot us have natural thin and weak hair. Thin hair can be a major pain on days you want to rock fuller, bouncy tresses but got absolutely no volume. Making your hair look voluminous isn’t an easy task.

There are no hair care products which can give your hair some volume naturally. So, we are only left with some hair hacks which can give you an illusion of a thicker mane.

Achieving the volume you desire can be easy and time saving if you know the right hair hacks. Recently, a hair hack for thin hair is going viral on social media. The hack going viral is called the pinch hair hack. The hack instantly adds thickness to the hair.

Emma Chen, makeup artist and hair stylist took to her Instagram handle and shared a simple trick to add volume to hair. Sharing a video of how the hair hack is done, Emma Chen on her post shared, “Using too much product can sometimes be as bad as not using any product at all . Hair becomes weighed down, limp & over processed. The key to adding volume and texture without relying on product is creating different shapes in the hair . It stops the hair barrelling into itself & creates dimension.”

Pick A Thickening Shampoo And Conditioner

If you don’t want to try expensive extensions or experiment with supplements, there’s always the tried-and-true method of volumizing: opting for a thickening or volumizing shampoo and conditioner. “I prefer to go with the work-with-what-you-have approach by using hair products and styling tools to create volume, thickness, and texture,” says Devin Toth, celebrity stylist at Salon SCK in New York City.

Shampoos and conditioners labeled volumizing or thickening usually contain fewer conditioning ingredients, so they dont weigh hair down, explains GH Beauty Lab Chemist Danusia Wnek. Theyre a good foundation for styling products the GH Beauty Lab recommends using the matching shampoo and conditioner set for best results, as they are formulated to work together.

Be conscious of the shampoos and conditioners you use.

“Unlike traditional shampoos and conditioners, volumizing products expand the diameter of each individual hair shaft, which is the best way to plump limp locks,” said Scott Yance, owner of Scottfree Salon in Milwaukee. After styling, plump your ends by pinching small sections of hair and rubbing it together. Just this small move can help give the illusion of fullness.”

Celebrity stylists recommend Thicker Fuller Hair Weightless Volumizing Spray, R+Co Dallas Thickening Spray, and Serge Normant Dream Big Instant Volumizing Spray.

And don’t forget to wash! Thin hair should be washed every day, as oils tend to build up more quickly in finer hair. The oils can weigh the hair down and give it an even thinner appearance, said style director Jerome Lordet from Pierre Michel Salon in New York City. “For shorter hair lacking body, there are hair-building fibers and powders that can be used to add texture.”

Women with finer hair should avoid the following terms when shopping for products: smoothing, moisturizing or silkening.

About 80 million people in the U.S. are struggling with hereditary hair loss, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

Soft Layers With Wispy Bangs

7 Best Hairstyles to Make Thin Hair Look Thicker

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

My client has hair thats medium-fine and wanted a style with movement, but wanted to keep as much length as possible. This look is softly layered, creating barely there layers on the top crown portion of the head that are blended into the bottom so that we dont take out too much weight. I love that she can have movement and texture without sacrificing density and length.

For her color, we gave her bright highlights with an iridescent golden tone and a creamy tan lowlight. The overall effect is a buttery, creamy and rich vanilla tone. This creates contrast and brightness without washing her out. I also love the versatile bang that is cut short and textured to sweep to the side. It creates a styled look even on the days she wants to pull her hair into a ponytail.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To achieve this look, I would absolutely recommend using Olaplex during the service and maintaining with the take home mask. It will keep her hair strong and healthy, especially in the summer months. I also recommend a good heat protection spray like Redken Pillow Proof Primer Spray and Pureology Style + Care Volume Blow Dry Lotion. For added volume at the root, use Pureology Clean Volume Spray.

Wash Your Hair With Shampoo And Conditioner

Oily hair is the kryptonite of thin hair. The way your oily scalp can cause your hair to clump together and fall flat is enough to make anyones hair appear thinner than it is. So, if youre trying to boost the volume of your hair, youll want to make sure that you wash your hair before oil and dirt to build up . While most shampoos are great for making your hair look fuller, you might want to go the extra step and use a shampoo and conditioner that boosts volume and makes your hair look thicker.

Just make sure not to go overboard on the volumizing products, especially those that contain paraffin , as it can weaken your hair over time and cause strands to break. But as long as you stick to shampooing daily with a gentle blocking shampoo, the chances of your shampoo damaging your hair will be greatly reduced.

Tips On How To Style Thin Fine Hair

4. Invest in a good volume spray. Try and find a volume spray that is light and allows movement. I absolutely love Davines Volu Hair Mist. Follow step 3 when drying the hair, but before you start to blow dry, spray the volume mist at your root and crown area and massage into your hair. Dont go overboard as you dont want to weigh the hair down, but enough so you feel a slight bit of texture as the hair drys. Flip your head over and dry the hair in the opposite direction it grows for added volume. But remember to wait until the very end when your hair is ready for the round brush.

5. Use a Dry Shampoo. Im aware that thinner hair gets greasier faster, but if you can hold off on washing your hair every other day and invest in a good dry shampoo, you can get great volume in your hair. I swear by dry shampoo and I live for Big & Sexys Dry Shampoo. It gives the hair enough grit and texture for day two hair and it gives it that tousled lived-in look that is so popular now. Take small sections around the crown area and spray the dry shampoo 6-8 away from the scalp. Repeat wherever you feel the hair needs it. Let it sit for two minutes to absorb the oils, then flip your hair over and brush your hair from root to ends. Instant volume! Visit for a new tip posted every Tuesday!
