It’s Not As Uncommon As You May Think
As it turns out, hair loss with psoriatic arthritis in women is not as uncommon as I had thought. Scalp psoriasis is typically the leading cause of losing hair but not the only one.
While distressing, hair loss resulting from scalp psoriasis most often grows back. That has been my experience, even when plaques are not visible.
Other causes of hair loss with psoriatic arthritis include scalp inflammation, damage from scratching or picking at psoriasis plaques, side effects of medications, and stress.
Physical stress has been the leading cause of my hair loss. I lose clumps of hair whenever two or more of my chronic illnesses severely flare at the same time. Being that most of mine are inflammatory illnesses, it makes sense. When PsA and my other chronic conditions are responding to treatments, I never lose clumps of hair.

Treatments To Clear Scalp Psoriasis And Stop Hair Loss
The good news is that there are many effective ways to treat scalp psoriasis. Once your skin clears, your hair will usually grow back.
The bad news is that scalp psoriasis can sometimes be difficult to treat. Hair makes the scalp inaccessible for topical therapies, which are thick and gooey and hard to get in and out of your hair.
The practicality of applying a cream, ointment, or foam into the scalp makes it difficult for topical treatment of psoriasis of the scalp, says Dr. Gohara. If you dont wash your hair every day, who the heck wants to slather creams and ointments on their scalp?
This is especially problematic for Black and brown-skinned people, she says, who tend to wash their hair more infrequently.
Treatment depends on the severity of the condition.

Drug Restores Hair Growth In Patients With Alopecia Areata
NEW YORK, NY, Sept. 22, 2016Seventy-five percent of patients with moderate to severe alopecia areataan autoimmune disease that causes patchy and, less frequently, total hair losshad significant hair regrowth after treatment with ruxolitinib, reported researchers from Columbia University Irving Medical Center . By the end of treatment, average hair regrowth among the patients was 92 percent.
Findings from an open-label clinical trial of 12 patients with alopecia areata were published today in the Journal of Clinical Investigation/Insight, alongside a paper reporting results of a separate study from Stanford University and Yale University that tested a similar drug.
Although our study was small, it provides crucial evidence that JAK inhibitors may constitute the first effective treatment for people with alopecia areata, said Julian Mackay-Wiggan, MD, MS, associate professor and director of the clinical research unit in dermatology at CUIMC and a dermatologist at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia. This is encouraging news for patients who are coping with the physical and emotional effects of this disfiguring autoimmune disease.
To test this hypothesis, the researchers initiated a small, open-label clinical trial of 12 patients with moderate to severe alopecia areata . All patients were given 20 mg of oral ruxolitinib, twice a day, for three to six months. Participants were followed for an additional three months to assess the durability of treatment response.

This damage results in oral ulcers, rashes, and other symptoms. Oral ulcers are swollen sores that appear inside your mouth. They may also develop on your lips or tongue. Depending on your skin color, the sores may be red or have a deepened tone.
Its not understood why Behçets disease affects some people but not others.
Symptoms of Behçets disease often occur in periods of flares followed by periods of remission. During flare-ups, symptoms worsen and become intense. During remission, symptoms tend to clear up.
