Hair loss after treatment is rarely permanent, but it might take a while to grow back.
Part of your hair is made of a protein called keratin. On average, hair grows at a rate of around 1cm or half an inch a month. However, after lymphoma treatment, you might have a temporary lack of keratin, which can weaken your hair and slow its growth. Once keratin levels return to normal, stronger hair can start to grow. How quickly your hair grows back depends on several factors, including the treatment type you’ve had, your individual response to it and your general health.
- After chemotherapy, hair follicles recover within a few weeks but it takes a bit longer before you can actually see new hair. Most people notice their hair growing back within 3 to 6 months of finishing chemotherapy, although it can take more or less time. Hair often grows back finer, straighter or curlier, or a different colour from how it used to be. Usually, in time, it returns to how it was before treatment. The change is permanent for a small number of people.
- After radiotherapy, it usually takes around 2 to 6 months for hair to grow back but it can take longer. Your hair might be curlier or a different texture than it was before treatment. In some cases, the hair loss can be permanent.
Can Anything Make My Hair Grow More Quickly
Some people think that if they rub or massage their scalp, their hair will grow more quickly. There is no evidence that this helps and, in fact, it could damage fragile new hair and so have a negative impact on hair regrowth.
There is some evidence that minoxidil solution might help it grow back faster. However, further research is needed. Speak to your medical team before using any over-the-counter medicines, to check that they are safe for you.
There are no complementary and alternative medicines recommended in the UK to help with treatment-related hair loss. This includes therapies and natural products such as vitamins, minerals and plant-based products.
If you are considering trying something to help your hair to re-grow, check with your medical team first that it is safe for you. Some could irritate your scalp and cause further hair loss.
For Men Using Rituxan
The manufacturer of Rituxan hasnt provided any birth control recommendations for men who take the medication. But if youre a man whos using Rituxan and your sexual partner can become pregnant, talk with your doctor. They can review your birth control needs during and after your Rituxan treatment.

What Are The Possible Side Effects Of Rituxan
Rituxan can cause serious side effects, including:

Tumor Lysis Syndrome : TLS is caused by the fast breakdown of cancer cells. TLS can cause you to have:
- Kidney failure and the need for dialysis treatment
- Abnormal heart rhythm
TLS can happen within 12 to 24 hours after an infusion of Rituxan. Your healthcare provider may do blood tests to check you for TLS. Your healthcare provider may give you medicine to help prevent TLS.
Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following signs or symptoms of TLS:
- nausea
- diarrhea
- lack of energy
A Day In The Life: Grace Receives A Rituxan Infusion
Every six months, my 16-year-old daughter, Grace, receives a dose of Rituxan , the latest and greatest treatment we have added to her regimen for Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome .
Before that first dose, Grace was exhausted all the time. She was able to do very little outside the house because her energy was so low. She could not walk more than a few steps without assistance. Her voice was weak and shaky.
Grace had responded well to prednisone, but because of the side effects, her doctor wanted her to wean off of it. At that point, her team of doctors thought it most prudent to try Rituxan.
Although Rituxan is prescribed for LEMS, its effectiveness in LEMS patients has not been tested in clinical trials. However, I can attest to its effectiveness in Grace. Rituxan has made an extraordinary difference. Grace has so much more energy than she did before the treatment. Her stamina has increased and her walking is sturdier. Grace struggled with slurred speech, and that has mostly disappeared. She has gotten big pieces of her life back since beginning this treatment.

Raised Levels Of Uric Acid
This treatment may cause the cancer cells to break down quickly. This releases uric acid into the blood. The kidneys usually get rid of uric acid, but may not be able to cope with large amounts. Too much uric acid can cause swelling and pain in the joints, which is called gout.
Your doctor may give you drugs to help prevent this. Drinking at least 2 litres of fluid a day will also help. You will have regular blood tests to check the uric acid levels.
Common Adverse Reactions And Side Effects Of Rituxan
According to clinical trial data, adverse reactions in patients receiving Rituxan for NHLs include the following, which were found to occur up to 12 months after Rituxan infusion:

Ultimately, though, the existing studies show finasteride works for more people. Which Chemotherapy Drugs Cause Hair Loss
Your medical team will speak to you about your risk of hair loss before you begin treatment.
Lymphoma chemotherapy drugs that usually cause hair loss include:
- doxorubicin
- ifosphamide
- conditioning chemotherapy .
Hair loss is more common with intravenous chemotherapy. Whether or not you lose your hair also depends on the dose of your chemotherapy and how often you have it.

Will My Hair Fall Out All At Once
Not everyone who has treatment for lymphoma experiences hair loss. If you do, your hair usually begins to fall out within a couple of weeks of starting treatment. It usually starts at the top and sides of your head, above your ears. It might fall out gradually, in clumps, or quite quickly. You might notice hair on your pillow or clothes, in your hairbrush, or in the plug hole of your bath or shower. Rituxan Use With Drugs
In some cases, Rituxan is used with other drugs to treat your condition:
- Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. With certain forms of non-Hodgkin lymphoma , you may take Rituxan along with chemotherapy medications such as cyclophosphamide, vincristine, and prednisone .
- Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The diffuse large B-cell lymphoma must not have been treated before. For this purpose, Rituxan is used with the medications cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone , or with other chemotherapy drugs called anthracyclines.
- Chronic lymphocytic leukemia. For chronic lymphocytic leukemia thats CD20-positive and has or hasnt been previously treated, Rituxan is used with fludarabine and cyclophosphamide.
- Rheumatoid arthritis. For rheumatoid arthritis thats moderate to severe and active, Rituxan is used with methotrexate . Active means that you currently have symptoms.
