There are three reasons stress hair loss typically occurs. Either stress pushed hair follicles into a resting phase, or in more severe cases, healthy cells including hair follicles are attacked by the immune system. The third alternative is when the stressed out person literally pulls their hair out.

What Are The Cycles Of Hair Growth
Hair goes through three cycles:
- The anagen phase can last from two years to eight years. This phase generally refers to about 85% to 90% of the hair on your head.
- The catagen phase is the time that hair follicles shrink and takes about two to three weeks.
- The telogen phase takes about two to four months. At the end of this phase, the hair falls out.
Your shorter hairs like eyelashes, arm and leg hair and eyebrows have a short anagen phase about one month. Your scalp hair can last up to six years or even longer.

Causes Of Anxiety Hair Loss

Not Just Covid Patients
Since much of the world has been under unprecedented levels of stress in the past two years, telogen effluvium has affected many who havent caught the virus as well, myself included.
In the summer of 2020, just a few months into the pandemic, my hair was falling out in much larger clumps than usual. I was accustomed to a certain amount of regular shedding because my hair is curly and fairly thickor at least it used to be. But as time went on, my hair grew thinner, and I came to dread washing my hair because I was scared about how much of it would fall out in the shower.
When I spoke to my doctor about it, her first guess was some kind of vitamin or nutrient deficiency, such as iron or B12. I did multiple rounds of blood tests in an attempt to uncover the cause, but ultimately we concluded that I was simply overwhelmed with stress, spending too much time in fight-or-flight mode.

Stress And Androgenic Alopecia
Hair thinning in both women and men is genetic and can be inherited from either parent. It is caused by a sensitivity in your hair follicles to both testosterone, and a hormone converted from testosterone called dihydrotestosterone .
If you have inherited follicle sensitivity, it will be triggered at some point after puberty . Once the sensitivity is triggered, your hair follicles will gradually miniaturise and the hair will grow back thinner over the years, reducing the volume and length of your hair, and making your scalp more visible.

One of the main reasons behind this is that stress often increases your bodys production of the stress hormone cortisol, which in turn can raise your bodys levels of testosterone. Stress And Hair Loss: The Basics
Contrary to popular belief, stress is not linked to male pattern baldness the form of hair loss that causes you to permanently lose hair around your hairline, temples and the crown of your scalp.
However, stress can trigger and potentially worsen a form of temporary hair loss called telogen effluvium.
Telogen effluvium affects your hair by interrupting the natural hair growth cycle.
Normally, there are four different growth phases during the hair cycle as it grows from below the skin to its full length, then falls out to be replaced by a new hair:
The first phase is the anagen phase, during which the hair grows to its full length.
The second phase is the catagen phase, during which the old, fully grown hair follicle detaches from the skin.
The third phase is the telogen phase, also known as the resting phase, during which a new hair starts to grow from the follicle to replace the old one.
The fourth phase is the exogen phase, during which the old hair falls out, with the new hair growing in its place.
Just like your skin and nails, your hair is constantly undergoing this growth cycle. Weve covered each phase of the hair growth cycle in more detail in our guide to the hair growth process.
Each phase of the hair growth cycle varies in length. Hairs usually stay in the anagen phase for up to six years during which they grow to their full length.
About 90 percent of your hairs are in the anagen phase at any time, meaning that most of your hair is constantly growing.
Ways To Treat Hair Loss
Whether its mindfully focusing on your breath or meditating for 10 minutes, do what you can to take the edge off any stress you might be feeling. Make it smell nice, use different textures theres a lot of research into how different textures can impact our mood. For example, sit on a soft cushion, or have something close by to touch.
