Symptoms Caused By Hormones From The Tumor

Install Sump Radon Mitigation

Some carcinoid tumors can make hormone-like substances that are released into the bloodstream. Lung carcinoids do this far less often than gastrointestinal carcinoid tumors.

Carcinoid syndrome: Rarely, lung carcinoid tumors release enough hormone-like substances into the bloodstream to cause symptoms. This causes carcinoid syndrome. Symptoms can include:

  • Facial flushing
  • Wheezing
  • Fast heartbeat

Many people with carcinoid syndrome find that stress, heavy exercise, and drinking alcohol can bring on these symptoms or make them worse.

Over a long time, these hormone-like substances can damage heart valves, causing:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Weakness
  • Heart murmur

Cushing syndrome: In rare cases, lung carcinoid tumors may make a hormone called ACTH. This causes the adrenal glands to make too much cortisol and other hormones. This can lead to:

  • Weight gain

How To Test Your Home For Radon

When it comes to reducing your cancer risk, one important step could be right under your nose, or your feet. Getting your home tested for radon can help protect you and your family from a key cause of lung cancer.

Exposure to radon accounts for about 21,000 deaths from lung cancer each year according to the US Environmental Protection Agency . While that is nowhere near the 480,000 deaths a year caused by smoking, its still significant. And its the leading cause of lung cancer in people who don’t smoke.

Is Hair Falling Out When Shampooing Normal

Totally! It is absolutely normal to lose up to 100 hairs per day. While shampooing your hair, you may lose even more than that . The fallen and tangled hairs or the hairs that were already about to fall will eventually fall out during shampooing and conditioning your hair and this is not caused by the hair products you use. Also, this should not be categorized as hair loss. During the washing process, hair sheds easier. Its as simple as that. So seeing more hair fall when shampooing is typically nothing to worry about.

If, however, hair fall starts to worsen, you should definitely look into it and find out if the shampoo is causing hair fall.

How Can I Protect Myself

You can test your home or office with a radon kit. Some will measure levels for a few days, and others can gather the data for at least 3 months. You leave a small measuring device in a room, and then send it to a lab. You can also hire a professional to test your home or workplace for you. The Environmental Protection Agency website has a list of approved contractors in each state.

Radon is measured in picocuries. Anything higher than 4 picocuries, or 4 pCi/L, requires action. If you get these results, run another short- or long-term test to be sure. If the levels are still high, contact a certified professional about making repairs to your home or office. This may include sealing cracks or installing a ventilation system so radon doesnât get trapped indoors.

Poisons That Make Hair Fall Out

Hair loss, or alopecia, can be a side effect of toxic chemicals and metals. Hair loss does not usually occur with acute poisoning, which can be lethal. But in cases of chronic poisoning, when the poison is taken in small doses over a long period of time, hair loss is a common symptom. Hair loss can also be a sign that your body has been exposed to an environmental hazard.

What Can I Do If Hair Loss Is Expected With My Radiation Therapy Treatment

Each person responds differently when learning that they may experience hair loss. There is no right or wrong response. Whats important is to do what you feel comfortable with, to do what is right for you. If you expect to lose the hair on your head during your cancer treatments, the following tips may be helpful:

  • If your hair is long, cutting it shorter may help decrease the impact of your hair loss when it occurs.
  • Some people find it easier to deal with hair loss by shaving their heads before hair loss occurs.
  • Be sure to protect your head with a hat to prevent sun exposure on sunny days- and not just in the summer months! This is especially important for men who are less likely to wear a wig or turban/scarf.
  • Use a soft-bristle brush and a gentle, pH-balanced shampoo.
  • Dont use hair dryers, hot rollers, or curling irons because they may damage your hair and make hair loss more severe.
  • Dont bleach or color your hair, and dont get a permanent. All of these make your hair brittle and may cause your hair to fall out faster.
  • Sleep on a satin pillowcase to decrease friction.

What Are The Symptoms Of Radon Exposure

Energy Recovery Ventilator by National Radon Defense

You wonât have symptoms of radon poisoning right away. Instead, health problems from the exposure, such as lung cancer, show up after many years.

Lung cancer may start as a nagging cough, shortness of breath, or wheezing that doesn’t go away. Other symptoms include coughing up blood, having chest pain, or losing weight without trying. If you notice any of these symptoms, call your doctor.

There are no routine medical tests that can tell you if youâve breathed in too much radon. And no treatments will clear it from your body. But if you think you may have been exposed, talk to your doctor about whether you should have tests to check for signs of lung cancer.

What Are The Symptoms Of Radon Poisoning

Radon is all around us. In fact, youre probably breathing it in every day, even if its at a low level. However, you cant tell if youre breathing it in at a high level. The danger in radon exposure is that you cant see it, taste it, or smell it. And you wont have any symptoms to alert you.

Radon gas can damage cells in your lungs, which can lead to cancer. Radon is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States, though it usually takes 5 to 25 years to develop.

Early signs and symptoms of lung cancer may include:

  • persistent cough

Interactions With Other Chemicals

Interactions of radon, cigarette smoke, arsenic, crystalline silica dust, and diesel exhaust particulates and the possible effects on radon-induced toxicity is an actively-researched complex issue. Cigarette smoke appears to interact with radon and its to potentiate their effects. In general, epidemiological studies have reported synergistic, multiplicative, or additive effects of cigarette smoke in lung cancer induction among miners exposed to radon and its .

Interactions between radon and arsenic were evaluated in a cohort of Chinese tin miners . A 75% reduction in the lung cancer risk was indicated after adjusting for arsenic exposure. In another study , decreased lung cancer risk from radon exposure was indicated after adjusting for silica exposure within the highest exposure group of a cohort of Swedish iron ore miners. In a multistate study of 12,315 non-metal underground and surface workers exposed to diesel exhaust particulates at facilities in Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, and Wyoming , an of 1.26 was calculated for from lung cancer among the workers compared to state-based rates.

In rats, administration of chemicals present in cigarette smoke after exposure to radon and its resulted in a decrease in the lung cancer latency period when compared to the time-to-tumor induction in animals treated with radon alone. This effect was seen with 5,6-benzoflavon and cerium hydroxide .

Losing My Hair From Cancer Treatment

Hair Loss Menstrual Irregularities, reverse hair loss naturally.Hair ...

When I first started chemotherapy to treat my lung cancer, my doctor insisted I would not lose my hair. She told me I might have other side effects, such as nausea, fatigue, and others typically associated with chemo, but those particular chemotherapy drugs would not cause hair loss.

I started my treatment in early August, and by the end of August, I was shedding hair like crazy all over the house. It was so bad, my husband bought buckets to put in each room to collect my hair in. In early September, I cut my hair short.

I asked other lung cancer survivors online if they had hair loss from the chemo I was on, and they did. I think it is just that everyones bodies respond differently to these treatments. My body definitely did not respond the way my doctor thought it would.

The hair loss didnt concern me, though, because I didnt have any other side effects. The first week, I did have a slight loss of appetite, but it came back after a few days. To this day, I have never had to face nausea. In fact, I was able to eat almost entirely normally throughout treatment. If I had to pick between hair loss and some of the other side effects, such as nausea or extreme fatigue, I would pick hair loss every time.

Ultimately, the hair loss was worth it. To me, the most important thing was that my cancer was being treated. Hair grows back even if it didnt, I still wouldve done the treatment. If its better for my health, its worth it.

Struggling With Dry Brittle Hair

Speaking of hair, hard water is no friend to a well-kept hairdo either! When the calcium and magnesium ions interact with hair follicles, they make the tiny scales that cover the follicle stand up. As a result, the hair tends to dry out quicker and tangle easier.

So, if youve been getting frustrated with a lot of unruly split ends lately, these could be hard water effects on your hair.

What Are The Stages Of Lung Cancer

Can Mold Cause Hair Loss

Most people think hair loss is exclusively caused by heredity, an unhealthy diet, poor lifestyle, or a combination of those factors. Not many people realize, however, that mold can also cause hair loss. Yes, it is surprising, but true. People typically associate mold with spoiled food, but mold can also inhabit damp, musty places and even parts of the body that accumulate moisture, but do not allow it to breathe, or dry out . Its no wonder then that hair loss could also be caused, unknowingly, by mold infection!

Hair Loss Remedies

Peter Panagotacos, MD Contents Chapter 4: Other Hair Loss Causes

The most common type of hair loss occurs in a predicable pattern, and pattern hair loss occurs when the normal cycle of hair growth changes. Usually pattern hair loss starts slowly, and continues to get progressively worse. Progressive pattern hair loss is a common occurrence among men, and less apparent but still quite common among women. While men typically suffer pattern baldness with receding hairlines and bald spots on the crown of the head, women typically experience generalized thinning hair over the entire top of the head. And as we age, the occurrence and degree of hair loss increases.A wide range of factors other than genetics can result in hair loss, and many of these conditions are temporary and can be effectively treated by a dermatologist. Diffuse non-scarring loss is usually androgenetic alopecia in men and women but can include telogen effluvium, and systemic diseases such as thyroid, iron deficiency, dermatomitis. Patchy scarring loss can be due to follimlites , lichen planolaris and discird lupus. Patchy non-scarring alopecia can be due to ringworm, trichotillomania, traction alopecia, and syphilis. Hair loss causes that are not based on genetics are discussed in this chapter, including the following:

Chemotherapy And Targeted Therapies

Chemotherapy is the use of drugs that are designed to kill rapidly growing cells, such as cancer cells. Chemotherapy may be injected directly into a vein or given through a catheter, which is a thin tube placed into a large vein and kept there until it is no longer needed. Some chemotherapy drugs are taken orally in pill form.

Targeted agents are a newer class of drugs that are designed to act against specific weaknesses in cancer cells or surrounding supportive tissues, such as blood vessels. These drugs can also be taken orally or by IV. They are most effective in cancers with specific changes in their genes or cell receptors.

In early stages of non-small cell cancer, chemotherapy may be used in conjunction with surgery to improve survival rates. In more advanced stages of non-small cell cancer and in all stages of small cell cancer, chemotherapy and targeted therapies may be used to relieve symptoms and extend life.

Chemotherapy affects both normal cells and cancer cells. Your doctors will try to prevent side effects as much as possible while treating the cancer appropriately. Side effects depend largely on the specific type of drug and the amount given. They can be different for each person and may be only temporary. Common side effects of chemotherapy include nausea and vomiting, hair loss, mouth sores and/ or fatigue. Your healthcare providers can suggest ways to make any side effects manageable and to help improve symptoms that may occur during and after procedures.
