Does Lo Loestrin Fe Cause Hair Loss

Hair Loss And Oral Contraceptives

What Caused My Hair Loss?

Since approval by the FDA in 1960, oral contraception has become one of the most popular forms of birth control used today. Millions of women are prescribed the Pill each year in this country, but very few are aware that oral contraceptives are a common trigger of hair loss.

The Pill suppresses ovulation by the combined actions of the hormones estrogen and progestin, or in some cases progestin alone. Women who are predisposed to hormonal-related hair loss, or who are hypersensitive to the hormonal changes taking place in their bodies, can have hair loss to varying degrees while on the Pill or, more commonly, several weeks or months after stopping the Pill.

The American Hair Loss Association recognizes that for the most part oral contraceptives are a safe and effective form of birth control. It also recognizes that the Pill has been clinically proven to have other health benefits for some women who use them. However, the AHLA believes that it is imperative for all women especially for those who have a history of hair loss in their family to be aware of the potentially devastating effects birth control pills can have on normal hair growth.

The hormonal contraceptives listed below have a significant potential for causing or exacerbating hair loss. Note that any medication or therapy that alters a womans hormones including, but not limited to, contraceptives can trigger hair loss.

How Does The Contraceptive Pill Affect Your Hairs Volume

Reduced hair volume is caused by a genetic condition, inherited from either parent, in which your hair follicles are sensitive to androgens . All women naturally have androgens in their bodies, but only some have hair follicles that react to them. If you have this sensitivity, once it is triggered, your hair follicles will gradually miniaturise and grow back thinner over the years. This reduces the volume and length of your hair, eventually making your scalp more visible.

Some birth control pills can slow or stop this thinning process, because they increase your oestrogen levels and/or diminish your testosterone levels.

Other contraceptive pills can raise your levels of androgens . These pills may trigger or worsen hair thinning.

Whether or not your hair will react to a birth control pill depends on how sensitive your hair follicles are to the hormones that pill contains. It also depends on your individual body chemistry, and on your bodys metabolism of the drug. Some women find that their hair is not affected at all by the pill.

Lolo birth control pills are a low-dose combination hormonal pill containing two hormones, norethindrone and ethinyl estradiol to inhibit pregnancy. Lolo is also known as Lo Loestrin. When taken as directed, Lolo helps minimize the chances of getting pregnant. In other words, lolo birth control pills contain an estrogen and a progestin.

Lolo is the first and only oral contraceptive to combine 10 mcg of ethinyl estradiol with 1 milligram of a trusted progestin, norethindrone acetate.

Besides preventing pregnancy, the Lolo contraceptive pill makes your periods regular, lowers the risk of ovarian cysts, decreases blood loss and painful periods, as well as treating acne.

Is Prolia Used For Osteopenia Or Arthritis

Prolia isnt approved to treat osteopenia or arthritis.

With osteopenia, your bone mineral density is lower than normal. This means your bones may be weaker than normal. As you age, your BMD is reduced, and this may increase your risk for osteoporosis.

With arthritis, you have pain and inflammation of your joints. The two most common forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis . RA is an autoimmune condition in which your immune system attacks your joints.

Prolia may be used off-label for RA, if you have a high risk for bone fractures.

The drug may also be used off-label for osteopenia, but usually, you dont need medications for osteopenia. Instead, your doctor may recommend that you make certain changes to your diet, such as increasing your calcium and vitamin D intake. They may also suggest exercises to help improve your bone strength and lower your risk for fractures and osteoporosis.

If you have questions about treatment options for osteopenia or arthritis, talk with your doctor.

Your Period Will Change

Not to state the obvious, but birth control pills have a big impact on your period. So quitting birth control does, too. I went off the Pill about six months ago, because my husband and I want to start a family, Kaely D. from California says. But I wish Id gone off years ago. I love how I feel. My periods are a little irregular and unpredictable, but thats not a deal breaker for me.

Irregular periods were a slightly bigger deal for Kathy H. from North Carolina, though. She took the Pill for nine years, but went off it when she wanted to start a family. Since the Pill regulates your hormones, your period will go back to the way it was once you stop taking it, says , MD, clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Yale School of Medicine. So if yours didn’t always come on time every month, you should expect to have that happen again.

And, again, itll take some time for your body to regulate, Dr. Edelman says. It can take months for your period to get back to what it was before you started the Pill. And it might never the samethough thats not the Pills fault. Many women forget that our periods change throughout our lives, she says.

Just because your period was always regular before you started birth control doesnt mean itll be regular afterward. Periods sometimes naturally change, and your bodys normal period when you stop taking the Pill might be very different from what it was before you began taking it.

The Pill And Hair Texture

While birth control wont generally alter hair texture, a very gradual thinning is possible, depending on your genes and the type of birth control you take. If you have a genetic predisposition that causes hair follicles on your scalp to be sensitive normal levels of male hormones, certain birth control pills may cause a deterioration in the diameter of strands. However, this does not happen over-night it is a slow process. Androgenic BCPs may also cause body and facial hair to become thicker and darker, adds Anabel.

Androgenic BCPs can also increase the amount of sebum your scalp produces, which can cause your roots to become greasy faster. Increased oil production may also make you more prone to getting pimples on your scalp, as well as your face. That said, if you suffer from a greasy scalp, as well as scalp and facial skin breakouts, oestrogenic BCPs may help as they often reduce oil production, advises Anabel.

Hormonal Contraception As A Hirsutism Treatment

What you See is What you Get | Lo que ves es lo que obtienes – Apostle Patty Valenzuela

Hirsutism is excessive male-pattern hair growth in certain areas of a woman’s face and body such as the mustache and beard area. Androgens, the dominant sex hormones in men, can be responsible for these conditions. Women normally have low levels of androgens, but abnormally high levels of androgens can lead to excess hair growth. Given that hormonal contraception can reduce the levels of free androgen in your system, certain combination birth control pills can be a helpful hirsutism treatment.

If you use this type of birth control, you may not even be aware of its non-contraceptive benefits. Certain hormonal contraceptives have been shown to diminish the effects of hirsutism. It is important to note that women may react differently to specific contraception, so this information is intended as a general overview. Please keep in mind that hormonal contraception is meant to be used for birth control potential non-contraceptive benefits can be considered when determining which hormonal birth control method to use.
